I Flip for Flip Flops

August 18th, 2010 @ 12:57 pm by Mrs. Starfish

I live in flip flops. I bring my own pair of flip flops to most weddings and leave them in the car, just in case. Heels+Dancing=pain. I’m no fun when I’m in pain. So I love going to weddings with flip flop baskets, it means more dancing and fun. The first time I saw this was at a family friend’s wedding and I thought it was the best idea ever! She actually did cute slip ons instead of flip flops, but it was amazing. The idea has stuck with me ever since. I’ve seen it at a few more weddings since then, and I’m hoping it will turn into a wedding classic. So of course, it is a must have for our wedding.

I waited for Old Navy’s annual flip flop extravaganza. Annually, they have a flip flop sale, where their classic flip flops are a $1 a pair! I needed lots of navy and white, I sat down one night and tried to figure out how many to get in each size. Mr. Starfish asked what I was doing and wanted to know why the guys don’t get any flip flops? Ha. I went back to my count and prepared for the next morning.

I ended up getting about 26 pairs. Not enough for all the women, but I’ve noticed it’s usually only the younger guests who take advantage of this anyways, so I hope the number is good. We tried to consider feet sizes of guests. That’s a little hard to estimate!

Starfish Mom and I spent a couple hours on Sunday morning watching My Fair Wedding and Amazing Cakes while labeling all the flip flops. It was an easy project, which involved printing the numbers, punching out the numbers, punching the backing, punching a hole for ribbon, and then tying the ribbon. It was super easy! I hope guests will use them and spend more time on the dance floor!

Are you providing flip flops or flats for your guests? How many did you purchase and how did you determine what sizes to get?

I was just looking at Old Navy’s website for flip flops 5 minutes ago! I am interested to find out how many of your guests use them.

We did this and every single pair was gone!! I bought about 40 pairs…Granted, it probably had something to do w/ the fact that we were outside and it was raining, so people wanted to save their shoes but I’m still mighty glad I decided to go with it!

I had 15 pairs for my 80 guests and I ended up with two left. They were a big hit. I would’ve used the too but I changed into a pair of reception Vans.

I love this idea - and I think you’re right about the younger guests being the most likely to use them.

We did this too (from Old Navy) and they all got used. My mom bought a bunch of standard sizes (W 6-9) and then some really big ones that I noticed the men take advantage of!

I’ve never been to a wedding with a flip-flop basket but it is the one thing I decided I had to have after seeing so many amazing pictures online!

I only bought about 15 pairs, plus 6 more for my bridesmaids. That covers about a third of the ladies, but I know many of them won’t be interested (esp the older ones wearing stockings. yuck). My reception is indoors in October too - I would have gotten more for a summer wedding.

I figured a bell curve would work for sizing: size 5 (1), size 6 (2), size 7 & 8 (4 each), size 9 (3), size 10 (2) or something like that. I hope it works out! It was fun buying wedding-colored flip-flops!

As I hear more & more about this idea I do really like it.. although most weddings I’ve been to when the girls’ feet start huring they just go barefoot! So I’m just not sure if it’s worth putting the time & money into this..

How many of each size did you purchase?

We had them at our wedding and at the end of the night there was only 1 pair left (which was in my size and I greatfully exchanged my heels for the flip flops on the ride to the hotel). We had about 40 pairs I think. I would recommend getting larger sizes since I went heavier on the size 6s and 7s.

WAIT! when is this magical ‘flip flop extravaganza’ of which you speak? i’ve been checking old navy’s site every few days for the last 6 weeks thinking “okaaaaay, the summer’s aaaalmost over, SURELY they have to be on sale now…”

HELP! ;)

I bought about 35 pairs from Old Navy a few months ago. I’m expecting about 130 guests at our wedding. I think I only got sizes 6 - 9, about 10 or 15 of each size.

My wedding is indoors, in December, so I probably bought way too many, but I ALWAYS appreciate a flip flop basket, and really, they’re like $2 each, plus I had some coupon, so definitely worth it in my book!

Now I need a fun basket and sign for them.

@Mrs. Trail Mix: That makes me want to buy more!
@Grace28: 2 5’s, 2 10’s, 2 9’s and a mix of 7s and 8s
@BostonBride12345: I think I do need to get larger sizes, I think they run small in general
@parisbride: Its in June every year, usually towards the beginning

I totally stocked up at the Old Navy flip flop sale, the cashier even let me buy double the “5 pairs per person” limit since the store I sent my family to was almost completely out of pink and green flip flops. We ended up with about 35 pairs in a range of sizes I got a few small and a few large but mostly 7-8-9 (my size). I’ve never been to a wedding with a flip flop basket and I think it is an awesome idea so I had to do it!

I’m debating whether to do the flip flop basket or not. It does seem like a wonderfully nice thing to do. I was just at Michael’s yesterday, and they had some cheap flip flops there for $1 or less. Not sure if that’s just my Michael’s or everywhere…

I love this idea, but I am too busy with bar prep to get organized and make this happen when the sale came around.
