My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Thinking Outside the Box

August 18th, 2010 @ 6:07 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

With the wedding less than 3 weeks away, I have begun tackling projects that have been put off for too long. One such item is the Wedding Card Box, which I’m told is a must-have at the wedding for guests to slip cards into. Here are some examples of card boxes:

The traditional, white card box:

Card box shaped like a cake:

They’re all fine but… I’m going to be honest with you, hive: I don’t like card boxes. I was a very hard time deciding what to do because I’ve just never seen one that I love. So I decided think outside the box on this one (har, har) and do something else. I’m going to go with the ever-popular birdcage as card box idea:

I found these adorable birdcage card holders at Saveoncrafts.com, and they’re a steal for only $22 plus shipping! I plan on decorating mine like so:

I love this look, and I think it will fit in nicely with the Tuscan Romance theme we’ve got going for the wedding. And the antique brass look matches our heirloom photo frames nicely:

[Personal photo] I just completed this project last night. It’s all coming together!

Are you “thinking outside the box” for your wedding card box?

We used a basket bc like you, I don’t really care for any of those card boxes…I think the birdcage is perfect for your colors and theme!

Love the birdcage idea, and it would have fit w/ our theme nicely, but we got ours “cheap as free” from another couple. Then we passed it on to yet another couple. (It was the hideous white “war chest” above. I did embellish it with damask ribbon which helped dramatically.)

We are using a drum with a slit cut in the top. The guest book is a drum head and the tables will be scattered with personalized guitar picks- so it fits in nicely. We talked about a guitar case also.

We’re doing the guitar case! I’m so excited for this one, I think its the most original idea I’ve had for the wedding so far. I’m still trying to think of ways to rockstar the rest of the wedding, but I don’t want to get all diner disco like all the websites tell me to -_-

The cardbox was something I never, ever wanted to have to think about, but I had put it on my to-do list. Then after meeting with our venue coordinator, I found out they have a birdcage thing for us to use! I was ridiculously excited. Yay for one less decision and FREE!!!

So with you on this! I don’t like any of the ‘traditional’ ideas either. I think we may do something with a wine box? My diy gland is tapped out.

When my parents married in 1974 they had used a white satin bag to collect cards when they went around table to table to thank and greet guests. We’re in the process of selling my Dad’s house (my mother passed in ‘06) and I was able to snag that very same bag that my mother used (it still has their wedding cards in it). FI’s sister just got married on 8/5 and offered us the use of her “war chest” but I declined. I think it’s more personal and special to use my mother’s bag. It’s one of the little touches that I’m doing to make her a part of our day. I have their cake topper too but haven’t quite figured out what to do with that.

I recently got married in Bay Area and we used a wrought iron dress mannequin

http://www.thepinkemporium.com/product/60-french-couture-vintage-style-iron-metal-dress-form-mannequin

and decorated it with flowers, a black jacket and bow-tie.

It was kinda like a bride/groom card holder. If you want pics you can leave a follow up comment.

Gluck!

So far I hate every option I’ve seen or thought of…so I’m putting that decision off for now, haha. I like birdcages, but they don’t really fit all that well with our theme. I need to some up with something, lol

We’re doing literary things, so I bought a wooden box that looks like a book from Hobby Lobby!

We’re going birdcage as well. There is one that has been passed around the family a bit, so I’m glad to use it!

We’re using a white lantern with starfish glued to the sides of it for ours. I made a “Cards” sign with my Cricut and will dangle it down the middle of the opening with raffia. Sooooo excited about it!!

Love your bird cages!!

Many discount stores (Beall’s Outlet, TJMaxx, etc) have the mini suitcases that are decorated with all sorts of different themes. I thought it would be cute to get one of those that matched the b&g’s home so they could use it again for decor.

Alas, the bride was offered a white satin quilted box… pretty, and FREE.

I was thinking about this too since I don’t like any of the “traditional” options either. I was thinking of getting a cute mailbox and putting the little flag up and making a sign that says “love notes” or some pun on mail. The idea is still in the works

I am not much of a fan of the cardbox either. We are using a mailbox with a slit cut into the top. I made the flag end into a little heart.

We are using a birdcage as well. I attached peacock feathers to the front of the invites….and using those colors for the girls….and “love birds” as a cake topper….so the cage seemed like it fit.
