The Mighty Gown, Revisited

August 18th, 2010 @ 9:08 am by Mrs. Glasses

I originally posted about gowns here.

Recently, Mrs. Lab posted about her eBay find; she found a replica Jim Hjelm dress for $699.

When I first talked about a dress, I had decided to search for a short gown for practical purposes. But this dress is my dream dress. It’s got lace, it’s a trumpet-style cut, shows off the girls nicely, and has a deep v-cut back. I became obsessed with v-cut backs since Mrs. Cherry Pie posted about altering her gown. I never wanted something big and poufy with a lot of tulle. I was in awe of this replica…it was perfect.

I sent my mom the link to the blog post because my parents are generously footing the bill for our shindig. I had her read it; I knew she would have some reservations, and I did, too, because we are not online shoppers. I believe I’ve mentioned that I like to able to see and touch what I’m buying. I was nervous she wouldn’t like the style on top of that. Well, the answer was a big, fat NO, but not for any of the reasons I thought.

She said the dress was too expensive.

I explained to her that the average dress is $800–$1,500 for non-high-end designers. At $699, I thought this replica was a steal. But it’s not my place to try and convince the person who is paying for the wedding to spend more than she thinks she should, so I dropped it.

When I talked to Mr. Glasses about this, he immediately suggested we should cover the difference of what my mom is willing to pay using our savings. I feel uncomfortable about this because our savings is what we’re supposed to be using while we are unemployed, and because the dress is a risk in the first place. If the quality of the dress isn’t up to par or the fit is all wrong, we’d be wasting our precious yen.

So if this dream dress is out, here are the top contenders:

This Oleg Cassini for David’s Bridal gown for $550. My mom likes the idea of David’s Bridal. Again, this is a very practical dress—it would look great on anyone, it’s short, and it’s the appropriate formality for a backyard wedding. It’s pretty, isn’t it?

This BCBG dress for $298. My mom also likes BCBG, so I know she’d go for this. Here’s the dress in action, from Style Me Pretty:

Neither of these dresses matches my description of my dream dress. I’m “settling” for something practical and budget friendly. The thought of that is a little depressing; shouldn’t I feel like I have the perfect wedding dress on my wedding day? But David’s Bridal and BCBG are definitely the safe bets. I could try them on the second I get to L.A., decide, and have any alterations rushed.

I am curious: has anyone had any experience with buying a wedding dress online? Or know someone who has? I still haven’t ruled the replica eBay dress out.

I don’t know anyone who’s bought a wedding dress, but a friend bought her prom dress from China for about $20 dollars, and with a little work from a seamstress (who was also her grandma) it fit perfectly. If they have some sort of return policy or if they can measure it for you, I’d say go for it!!!

I bought mine online! I buy everything on the internet though (because then I can shop at work). ;)

A replica is a grey area because you never know what the seamstress will actually come up with (I also got one of those it was cute for the money).

If you have to buy online manufacturers are your best betcan give you specific measurements to their garments, plus usually they have a better return policy than someone who is custom making a dress.

I think you should be able to have your dream dress. After all, that’s what the guests are going to notice and REMEMBER the most. I feel that the dress and the food should be the two most expensive things at the wedding because, you get what you pay for. How much is your mother willing to pay? maybe you can have Mr. Glasses family contribute a little if you explain the situation?

FYI White House Black Market has a dress similar to the DB dress you posted and it is $498 http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=26&pageId=1&productId=570002682&viewAll=true&prd=The+Grace+Bridal+Gown&subCatId=&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=4&catId=cat5919278&cat=Denim&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=1&size=
It’s also not a V-neck but he Limites has a wedding gown that looks perfect for a backyard wedding for $298 as well http://www.thelimited.com/detail/romantic-wedding-gown/3254557
Have you tried Nordstrom, they have several wedding dresses online in a variety of styles but all moderately priced. These are dresses you can order online with a return policy while still coming in under budget!

I am planning to buy my dress from bridaldress4u.com. I can’t even imagine paying the full price for the Monique Lhuillier dress I fell in love with so am going to give the online/China route a try.

There was a poster on here a while ago that had a great experience with bridaldress4u, that is why I started looking in to them.

I think you need to purchase your dream dress, otherwise you will always be thinking back to ‘the one’….

BTW, I tried on your Jim Hjelm dress. The style didn’t suit me but it was a goregous dress!

I would look at secondhand online stores like http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com or browse the classifieds here!

I didn’t buy mine on ebay…but I did buy it on the weddingbee classifieds! It’s a great place to look. Check it out, you might find an amazing dress for an even more amazing deal! (Uhm, cutting this comment off now…I sound like a used car salesman!)

If you settle for something that isn’t even close to what you’re wanting, I think you will regret it and you might even get mad about it and feel resentful. There are certain things that I would be willing to use some of my savings on, wedding dress included. Speak to the fiance, and if he’s okay with it too, why don’t you go for it? If you buy the same dress as Lab, and she said it was a great quality of work, then you’re all set.

Look at it this way: it’s only a $150 difference between the David’s Bridal dress and your dream dress. That’s 3 dinners out, 30 trips to Starbucks, or 40 packages of oreos. I’m sure you already are cutting back–I think all wedding planners are!–but if that’s the dress you want, you can make it happen.

If you have enough time when you get to the US, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with what DB has to offer and you may find something that you love and meets your criteria more! But if that’s risky, try once wed, preowned wedding dresses, recycled bride, bride power- there are tons of resources online.

You never know! I set my budget and still went to stores to try on different shapes to see what worked best. I figured out what I wanted and described it to the girl. She went in the back and returned with a discontinued sample in my size for 50% off. Sold. :-)

I purchased my dress online because it had layaway! LOL…My sister took my measurements and I ordered up a size and it fit perfect, no alterations. It wasn’t my “dream” dress but everyone complimented me on it and once I had hair and makeup done it looked great.

Have you looked into other online retailers? I got my dress for under $200! (through a very reputable China based ebay replica company.) I wrote a lot about it on the boards; if you want more info, feel free to PM me! (I’m really bad about checking back on blog comments I leave, so a PM really is your best bet)

Sweetie… this is your WEDDING DRESS. You only do it once - think of it this way, in 20 years will you regret spending $150 to get the dress you REALLY wanted? Probably not. Will you regret it if you settle? You might.

I’m like you and would be very wary of making such a big purchase online…I get freaked for any purchases online over $100.

I think you’ve made the right decision. I bought my wedding dress really really early, and it was expensive. It’s beautiful, but I kind of regret that decision. Later on, I realized I could have had a nicer reception if I’d saved that money. Your wedding day is about beauty and extravagance, but it’s also about honoring your family and your guests. Good for you for remembering that.

A friend of mine wore the BCBG dress for her wedding and look fantastic in it… she had it altered so it had more of a fit and flare look. I would try things on before you decide what your “dream dress” is. A lot of the time you get something on and feel completely different about it.

I bought a replica of a David Bridals dress online (ebay, actually). It was “custom” made to my measurements (I emailed them in) and it was $160! (The orginal David Bridal dress was $500). I figured I’d only be wearing it for like 10 hours and it wasn’t worth pouring a lot of money into. In the end, I loved it, I think I looked good in it (at least my husband said I did, hehe), and nobody knew (well except all my blog readers and ppl who knew) that it was only $160!

PM me if you’d like to see pictures of the orginal vs the one I got.

Thank you everyone for your words of support and advice. I have been searching used wedding gown websites to no avail :( But I will keep looking. Thank you to those of you who told me about your internet wedding gown experiences as well. Very interesting and informative!

@msatl07: Here is the post where she talks about it and links to the store: http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/06/08/ebay-wedding-dress-2
