Wake Up Makeup

August 18th, 2010 @ 2:40 pm by Mrs. Husky

When Mr. Husky’s semi-retirement first began, he would get up with me on most mornings and make a pot of coffee. Now, before you all swoon over how sweet he is, you should know that it’s because I’m no longer allowed to make coffee. Every time I try, it’s either too weak, or I put so much coffee in the filter that it overflows and clogs up the coffee maker. Regardless.

Recently, however, I’ve been spending my mornings alone and coffee-less.

Most mornings I’ve been happy to let him sleep, but I was extra groggy this morning and asked him if he would make us some coffee. He did, and I finished getting ready. As I was walking out the door, he said, “You look great. I forgot how pretty you are in the morning.” Awwww.

I’m going to ignore the possible implication that I look less pretty when he sees me in the evening, and instead try to pinpoint why I look pretty in the morning. I think it’s fresh-face—my Wake Up Make-Up.

You see, I’m not a very great makeup artist and my skin tone is often flushed. In the morning, my face is washed, moisturized, primed, and then I use a finishing veil powder on top of the primer. Generally, I really like the way this looks—when I first put it on.

But as the day progresses, my face gets shiny, and the redness of my cheeks begins to show through. If I add more of the finishing veil, it can start to look cakey. I’ve tried blotting papers, but it seems to take off the makeup too.

So I’m putting this question up for the hive:

How do you keep your makeup looking “morning fresh” all day? Since hiring a makeup artist for the wedding is out of the question, I need to find a combination of products that will keep my face looking like it does when I first put the makeup on.

Here’s my daily lineup:

Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser

Olay Complete All-Day Moisture for Sensitive Skin

Wake Up Makeup : wedding beauty denver makeup 3 3

Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting Primer (in green, to reduce redness)

Wake Up Makeup : wedding beauty denver makeup 4 4

(source)

Maybelline Mineral Power Finishing Veil Powder

Wake Up Makeup : wedding beauty denver makeup 5 5

(source)

Honestly, I think it could be the moisturizer’s fault. I’m not crazy about it, and my face always feels kind of greasy afterwards.

I’ve also heard about finishing sprays, but I don’t know enough about them to be sure.

Do you have any recommendations for keeping your fresh-face all day long?

you know it may sound crazy. but I use hairspray sometimes to set my makeup after its all done. I learned this from dancing all my life. stage makeup would stay put with some hairspray. my makeup keeps nicely when i do that.

I dont have the answer for you, but I am looking for it as well! I also use that moisturizer and there have been many a day where I wonder if it causes my greasy/shiny skin. I dont think I ever had skin like this prior to using it…….hmmmmm

I really like the Aveeno moisturizer that comes in a little green bottle, but the Nutrogena Visibly Even daily moisturizer is also fantastic. Neither make my skin feel greasy.

i’ve done the hairspray trick too! it DOES help.

also, i would try the aveeno moisturizer too! it works great on sensitive skin and is the ONLY stuff that doesn’t make my skin go crazy.

The best recommendation I got from a makeup artist was to use an exfoliator in the morning before applying moisturizer and makeup. That has made such a huge difference in how my face looks at the end of the day, I can’t even express it. My face is less greasy, makeup less clumpy and everything stays put so much better. I do also want to get an eyeshadow primer they always try to sell me and I pass up, because I feel like that’s the one thing that disappears by the end of the day. It’s like I never put any on in the first place!

Olay moisturizer is pretty heavy stuff (works great, but if you have a grease face like me, maybe not the best route to go). I would try something like the Aveeno moisterizer (get a gel formula if you have oily skin) or even the Mary Kay daily moisterizer (my personal favorite!). Try the bare minerals makeup primer instead of the smashbox, I think you will have better results

I have terrible skin. like a 14 year old girl. I have just started using Mary Kay Velocity facial cleanser and moisterizer. Then I use mineral foundation and a light cheek color. It lasts almost all day. I wake up at 7am and put it on, when I go to bed at 10pm, it still looks good. I might reapply the mineral powder once during the day. but it stays fresh pretty much all day.

I use Aveeno cleanser (skin brightening, I think), then a toner (a facialist told me it would help decrease the size of my ENORMOUS pores), and then Aveeno moisturizer. Then I use Two Faced’s Primed and Poreless primer (again, because I have ENORMOUS pores) and I love it - it makes my skin super-soft and also keeps it from looking greasy later in the day. Then i use the exact same finishing veil. I also recently started to exfoliate twice a week, which seems to have helped a lot.

@moderndaisy: check out Too Faced Shadow Insurance. I swear by it. It seems kind of expensive for an ittybitty tube, but it lasts - you only need a tiny dab and your shadow stays on all day.

I cannot recommend Dr. Brandt’s “Pores No More” highly enough. It looks like a foundation when you pump it out, but it’s translucent and sheer. It reduces greasiness on my face all day and totally eliminates the appearance of pores. You just put it on right after your regular makeup, and it doesn’t move the makeup or look cakey at all. You can reapply later on in the day and it looks totally fresh again. I am in love with it.

Moisturizer could be a culprit- you should only use a little bit if it’s pretty concentrated (which I don’t know but you should check into). Also, a little known fact is you should use only one brand of products on your face.. they work together for your benefit. All stuff I learned being a Mary Kay consultant which I would of course recommend! I love the products which is how I got sucked into doing it :-P

Former bee Miss Rainbow had some amazing tutorials. I remember reading her saying that mineral makeups are not good for photographs because they contain a chemical called mica that makes you look all shiny.

Neutrogena makes a nice, mattifying moisturizer that I like to use under make up. It’s great because it gives you a nice surface to put make up on, and it helps to reduce oil a little bit during the day, too. The only downside, for me, is that it doesn’t include SPF. I think it’s their oil-free combination skin moisturizer.

My friend did her own make-up for her wedding and she used Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray. It seemed to work really well in keeping her makeup from running.

The moisturizer that I keep going back to is Cetaphil.

Also - maybe try a higher quality mineral veil like bare minerals? it doesn’t get cakey at all.

I use Dove moisturizer for sensitive skin, works well, lightweight and not greasy. Clinique is a great brand for sensitive skin, a bit pricy but good.

Ask for samples at the beuty counters and at Sephora. Better to try before you buy.

@jlp2w71611: I’m not too sure that you *always* need to use things from the same line. Your Mary Kay consultant probably is trying to ensure brand loyalty - if you buy everything in her line, instead of mixing and matching to your skin’s need across brands, they get all the profit from it. I mix and match, and my face is the better for it!

Jafra foundation has changed my life. No joke. It will cover ANYTHING. And the best part about it is when you take it on the honeymoon and swim, sleep, eat, sweat (and whatever else you can think of) it wont wear off! I’ve been using it for years and will never buy anything else!

Have you ever gotten cliniques free bonus? The moisturizer in there is light enough to use. Then when I went to Sephora for a makeup trial they used Smashbox primer and the HD foundation. It evened my skintone out completely. A lil blush/bronzer made me looking great. And it stayed pretty all day. The only thing I might do day of is look into blotting pads for my grease in case I get a lil hot and sticky.

I can dig up the details for you or you can find em on my blog. I did spend a pretty penny on it all though. But the makeup was the best I’ve ever tried for a flawless finish.
