Adventures in Registry : wedding guam registry Barrettes13

Isn’t it everyone’s wildest dream to run down shopping aisles and say, “I want THAT, I want THAT, one of these…” without having to fish out their wallets at the checkout line? If so, why am I having such reservations about just going for it?

I thought registering for gifts would be pretty simple, but it turns out that I’m having trouble clicking on the button that reads, add this to registry. As a guest at a wedding for a couple that I know and love, why would I want to give them flatware? Aren’t my guests going to be bored by giving us housewares that we don’t have a place for? As a couple already *ahem* living together, we already have stuff. And I imagine once we leave the island and move back home, we will get rid of said stuff and accumulate new stuff on our own. What fun is getting a blender for you wedding?!

Mr. B really wants a snowboard, and I want to upgrade my photography with a new camera. He wouldn’t mind some camping gear and I could use a bike. But then again, we wouldn’t be using these things in Guam, and they’d end up in storage until we moved anyway. When I ask Mr. B for his opinion he says, “What about things to build our house, like tile?” WHAT! TILE? Congratulations on your wedding, guys. Here’s a box of tile for you!

So I’m back at square one. I have registered at the ubiquitous Crate & Barrel for the routine housewares, but every time I look at the registry, I’m so uninspired. I’ve also registered at Amazon.com, which basically means everything under the sun can be added to that list. While I can guarantee that one of the first items on that registry will be a Canon EOS Rebel, I’m waiting for a brilliant streak to send me into a clicking frenzy. And to my savvy guests, I beg you to use your imagination. Please don’t give me forks.

i, on the other hand, would love it if my guests gave me and FI forks. we need housewares! I understand your dilemma however. Have you considered a honeymoon registry or similar?

Why not register for the fun stuff? We gave our dear friends who got married last year Rock Band guitars. Seriously - people will be happy to purchase you these things, because they know it’s what you really want! And, a word to the wise, get the 50mm f1.4 lens to go with that Rebel. Don’t get a stock lens. You can thank me later ;-)

My FI and I live together too, but we’re taking the registry as an opportunity to upgrade and replace things. Not to mention put things on it that we wouldn’t just go out and buy. And we would love silverware because we are using crap stuff now and refuse to buy new ones until after the wedding lol. Every time I check the registry FI asks if someone has bought our silverware yet ha ha ha

you can register at home depot, actually =) i’m pretty sure we’re not doing a registry, but if we were i’m sure that would be at least part of it. the fact of the matter is that we have the stuff to go *in* the house, but the house itself is in serious need of some work! but, perhaps i’m the only girl around here who would find tile inspiring on a registry ;)

Now that I’ve actually set up my own registry, I no longer feel weird about buying people flatware and dishes for their wedding. I too always wanted to buy the “cool” gift, but now that I’M getting married, I can’t wait to get our new dishes and sheets and towels and boring stuff! Think of it as a piece of your new home together, regardless of if you already live together; it’s a new start!

We’re having registry troubles too and have definitely talked about registering for bikes.

I always wanted to get the cool registry stuff too and steered clear of forks and china (that’s for the old people to purchase). But now, that’s what I want the most! I see so many people write about how they have been living with their partners so long and they don’t need stuff. Well, we both brought old, mismatched crap to our apt. years ago and I never upgraded, figuring I could register for it someday. So, bring on the flatware! (please?!?!)

My SO and I are going to register at REI. We’re okay with buying housewares ourselves. We’d rather our friends buy us our fun stuff!

We’re registered at Cabela’s and Honeymoon Wishes. We, too, have all the necessary housewares, and since we’re renting, who knows how we’ll want to decorate a house once we buy it. I’m hoping that most people will purchase items off our honeymoon registry, but for traditionalists that want to buy us “stuff,” we have the Cabela’s list :)

We had a similar problem! We registered for fun and practical…and got mostly fun. While I’m so touched that people were amazing and generous at the shower and went for the fun/decorative/keepsake type stuff, we realize that we’re moving in together at the end of the month and the only pot we have is a 1 quart saucepan LOL. Then again, we received a lot of gifts we’d never spend the money on ourselves…so it’s a give and take…and it the end, you get presents, so that’s good, right? Good luck, and I hope you get your Rebel!!

haha. we registered for everything - even though my husband only wanted money - and guess what we ended up getting? pretty much JUST money! Seriously, we had a total of 5 or 6 actual “gifts” that we opened and the rest was all cash & gift cards - which was a good thing because it sent us on our honeymoon! :D

We live together as well, but as a result much of our stuff is an amalgamation of colors and handed down flatware. Plus you can always use an update set of knives or an additional sauce pan.

Our theory with the registry is that we should fill it with things we know we will need in the next few years (even though we might have to store a few until we buy a bigger place) and to use the money that we “save” to save up for things like skiis for the FI or a bike for me.

I want to register for a camera and bikes so badly–totally feel where you’re coming from.

I think the point of a registry is to give the couple something that will help them in their lives together - that’s why housewares is the obvious choice, since you live together. Things like a camera for you and a snowboard for him are kind of missing the point. If you guys are avid snowboarders and go together every weekend or something that’s one thing, but the registry isn’t like a free-for-all wish list. We registered for really nice basics to replace our yucky ones, and every time I use our gorgeous every day bone china I feel happy and grateful to the people who gave it to us.

We did a honeymoon registry on Honeyfund.com. It’s free and you can create a registry with items to build your house. I know this type of registry can be controversial but if I were a guest at a wedding, I would be glad to know I am buying the couple something they truly want or need.

We registered for forks from C&B, but I am so happy to get them because we have this awful, rusty ikea set.
