I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Cricut Cake FAIL

August 19th, 2010 @ 4:04 pm by Mrs. Sand Dollar

I spent five hours last night baking and rolling fondant and freezing for the Cricut Cake. It was a massive fail, and it took down any last hopes of decorating my own cake. Here’s the evidence:

From this angle, maybe it’s not so horrendous? It’s a little crooked (I was never planning on baking my own cake, as I totally suck at it.) Here’s another look:

Dude, it sucks. Everything is crooked, and I could never figure out the right speed and pressure for the machine. I tried heavy pressure, and it just smooshed everything. Then I tried light pressure, and it wouldn’t even cut through. And those stars look like they’ve been through the wringer.

Guys, this cake blows. And this was my third attempt. Which took all. effing. night. My self esteem cannot take another hefty failure like this. Plus, do I really have that much time to dedicate the few days before the wedding? Hells to the no. The one good thing about this whole experience has been my renewed faith in our topper. And I finally was able to convince Mr. SD that the cake road was over. Stay tuned to see what I came up with for our cake alternative!

Did you run into any big disappointments in your wedding plans? Did you press on, or come up with a plan B?

HAHAHAHAHA! I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, but I TOTALLY know the feeling. All you can do in these situations is laugh at the disaster before you and move on to Plan B. Good luck!

Did you roll the fondant and freeze it before cutting it? And maybe rolling it thinner would help…not sure if this is much help but I hope the cricut hasn’t turned out to be a complete waste of money & that your luck turns around! good luck =]

Heehee, um, I don’t mean to be a total a-hole but well, I can see why you abandoned the decorating of the cake…and I’ve soooo been there!
On the plus side, I love your cake topper!

For the reals guys, I tried so hard! And it was such a complete and utter failure. I laughed my ass off showing my friends. It looks like a Play-Doh cake! Tomorrow will be more about our new alternative cake options!

I actually bought a Cricut Cake because of your previous posts. Also having trouble with the fondant but we only tried it with Wilton’s pre-made at Walmart so I’m thinking that’s the problem.

It worked better for us when we rolled it VERY thin, after it was in the freezer, and then immediately stick it back in freezer to harder up a bit then start taking it apart and placing on cake.

My next hope lies within some SugarVeil I ordered. We’ll see.

And haha, get this. We got price quoted $600 for a cake which I found ridiculous so I used it as an excuse to buy a $250 cricut machine. Eesh. ‘Cause I’ll have it ‘forever’ if only I can get it to work.

Best of luck!!!

Your topper is way cute. Sorry about your cake fail :( I wonder what your clever mind has come up with instead…

Okay, I had been disillusioned to think that the Cricut Cake was some miracle worker. I guess it’s not so easy after all! I still LOVE your topper though!

i don’t mean to sound like an a-hole either but when you originally said this was your plan, i feared it would end up this way - because, like many commenters above, i’ve also been there.

no worries though, i’m certain your wildly creative resourceful self has come up with a killer alternative!

@BrittanyMarie: Let me know if you ever figure it out, there MUST be a trick out there! I’m about to start searching for CC forums and support groups, cause that little bugger is TOUGH!
