Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Our Ceremony Venue—Waiting It Out

August 20th, 2010 @ 1:16 pm by Mrs. Hippo

I think for some couples, the ceremony venue is a no-brainer. If you go to church regularly or have a childhood church you connect with, there’s not much to think about. But for us heathens, that’s just not the case, and we had so many things to consider—indoor, outdoor, hotel, historic site, museum, and on, and on…

Since I am a 30-something bride and have been to 30-something weddings (o.k., MAYBE I’m exaggerating a TEENY bit), I really want our wedding to be different. While the church wedding followed by the hotel or country club reception are perfect for some people, it’s just NOT us. And since all of my close friends have already tied the knot and also been to a million and two weddings, I just want ours to be unique. We have relatively modern taste as far as decorating goes, so for us, a very traditional, antique-furnished venue was not going to cut it. King Hippo was open to pretty much anything (I think he said getting married in the living room of our tiny New York apartment would be okay…ummmmm, not a chance), which basically meant it was totally on me to figure out.

Enter the art gallery.

We (and by we, I mean I) have been able to secure the most amazing modern art gallery for the ceremony. I am so excited!!! It took a lot patience and a little prayer (ummm…maybe this church thing needs another chance!) ’cause the gallery wasn’t able to commit to the date right away. It actually took several months of waiting to be able to nail it down because they wanted to make sure the date didn’t conflict with art gallery openings of neighboring galleries. Since they don’t typically do weddings (they’ve actually only hosted one other ceremony), I had a hard time trying to explain that while yes, eleven months is early to book a venue for a random event, it is indeed not too early for a wedding. Regardless, I just had to wait it out, and since I REALLY wanted to use this particular space, I was willing to wait. I was ecstatic when the gallery FINALLY confirmed right around the nine-month mark. Woohoo!!!

Did you have to wait out any of your venues? Was it worth the wait?

Wow, it looks beautiful. Is it for a ceremony only or is it for the ceremony and reception?

Awesome. I love non-traditional venues. Which is why we’re having our reception at an Antique Auto Museum!

Love the art gallery as venue idea. We’d have gone a similar route, but we went old-historic SF instead. We had to challenge people for the date and we won out! Woo hoo!

Very cool! We’re having a church wedding but had to wait because they wouldn’t let us reserve more than 12 months out (although the woman finally relented and put us on the calendar two weeks early). But I was with you on the hotel/country club reception–absolutely not our style. We considered the art museum and a sculpture park, but ultimately decided on the aquarium. I was very nervous though because although the aquarium doesn’t do many weddings, all of the traditional venues (hotels and country clubs) were already booked up for our date and I thought that it might be snapped up before we could confirm the church. Fortunately it all worked out and we get a little traditional with a whole lot of not-so-much.

I’m super excited! Thanks for all the positive feedback.

@bRooklynRocks: The art gallery is for the ceremony only. The reception will be at a different space nearby. More details to come… :)

@jackie-o: Wow. That was the nicest comment ever! Thanks so much, Jackie-O!

I’m so jealous. I love art gallery weddings. Had I not been a crazy “WANNA HAVE WEDDING AT HOME” bride, we would have totally gone that route.

We don’t practice any major religion that dictates where we need to have our ceremony either. Lucky for us that made our backyard an option! I have seen a few art gallery weddings on the hive and they’ve all been gorgeous! Can’t wait to hear more about your venue in the months to come!
