I Heart Anemones

August 20th, 2010 @ 9:48 am by Mrs. Glasses

I love October. In California, the weather is not too hot, not too cold. October has Halloween, and it’s just before the madness of November and December, and it has World Series baseball! This October is extra special because we are celebrating our marriage—I get to dress up as a bride!

But I really think us October brides get the short end of the pretty-flower stick. We get the oranges, browns, and sharper looking flowers like the dahlia and chrysanthemum. Of course, we also have the normal flowers available all year round, like roses, carnations, and orchids.

What I really want, though, I can’t have. I was Skyping with my mom, the florist, about flowers:

Me: “What about ranunculas?”

Mom: “NO RANUNCULAS!”

Me: “Peonies?”

Mom: “NO! NO PEONIES IN OCTOBER!”

Me: “… anemones?”

Mom: “DEKINAYO! DAME!

Dame means YOU CAN’T DO THAT in Japanese, just in case you didn’t see where that was going.

I really love anemones. They’ve got a personality all their own, don’t they? In bouquets and centerpiece arrangements, they just seem to pop! These babies make me want to push our celebration back into Spring.

I am bumming hard about all the spring flowers that aren’t in season for our October wedding. Are you/did you experience serious wedding envy? What are your favorite things that you can’t have (I have tons!)?

Hydrangeas are in season in the fall, and I heart them! Not an option for our March wedding. Sadness.

I’m having an October wedding as well, and love peonies and all fluffy flowers. What about cabbage roses? Those are fluffy. I tried to do a google search to see when they bloom but couldn’t figure it out….

looove both peonies and anemones! We’re using both of them in October - but our florist is having them shipped to her. Surprisingly enough, having her get them shipped in and everything is LESS expensive then using boring season flower I don’t want from another florist who wouldn’t even offer to having them shipped in. Funny thing is, she’s having them shipped in from California. I have no idea about flowers but I guess I assumed that was because they were fine there in October apparently I was wrong lol.

I’m Oct too, but as we’re doing it in Mexico, I DO have some extra leeway. I settled with white, ivory, light yellow flowers and some green hydrangeas.

However, I really wanted blue hydrangeas which they don’t have in MX in the fall (green and white only). I also would have loved Lilacs. I could have flown in blue hydrangeas but it would have been silly expensive

I’m having the same problem. As a Sept. bride, peonies were not available for me…tear. I drool over every spring wedding that has peonies in it!

I diy’d all our wedding flowers with roses and blue irises from fiftyflowers.com. I just checked their website and it says that their white anemones are available year-round! I would definitely check out the bulk/online options before you give up on them!

@ktbrady: Cabbage roses are in bloom and if we can find them we are definitely using them!

@coffeekitty: I am clueless about flowers. All my mom, the florist, said was that they weren’t available around our area. But, at the risk of sounding blunt, isn’t it crazy expensive to ship them in for a wedding? And aren’t they slightly flimsier? The peonies around here started looking weak towards the end of their season. Sorry if that is a little forward but I am genuinely curious as to how people are shipping them in!

I’m thinking about either doing clay flowers or going the silk route so I’m going to do whatever I want for my fall wedding darnit!!

@Miss Hippo: Ask around a little bit! Are you sure you can’t get them? My wedding was in March in Massachusetts and we had LOTS of hydraenga.

I love anemones too and am determined to have at least a few them in my bouquet at the very least. I’m getting married in late May, but I don’t want to take any chances, so I plan to sew three or four of them (I can’t sew but with so many tutorials out there, I’ll figure it out!) Why don’t you do that? You could slip the silk anemones in with your other real flowers, and no one would ever know they aren’t the real thing. Then you could save them as a memento!

PS Off topic: Buy the gorgeous knock-off dress you love. It is so beautiful! The few hundred euros it would cost to cover the difference in what your parents will spend will mean nothing in the long run, but you’ll have your dream dress!! (my 2 cents…)

i LOVE anemones, but flowers are one thing we are trying not to splurge on (since before this whole wedding thing i didn’t care about or notice flowers), so i figured shipping them in would be out of the question, price-wise. i’ll definitely ask some florists though…it sounds like some of you have gotten good deals, even with shipping.

If you were willing to go non-local for your flowers, i’m sure you could get some of those flowers. My wedding is in mid-September, and we’re getting our ranunculus through fifty flowers. I think I remember them saying they were available in October, too (they just come from South America).

Yes I want a picasso Calla Lily in November and the florist want to charge me both arms and one leg to fly them down and have them in my wedding. My budget for flowers is like 500 bucks so there is nooo way they can be fresh. The Dollar Tree actually carries them they arent as pretty as the real ones but they could work.

I love anemones too but didn’t use them bc they are not very hearty flowers! They wilt pretty easily, sadly…But still, so very beautiful!

I could have written this post myself. We booked an October wedding and when I got around to looking for floral inspiration I was bummed to find out that EVERY SINGLE flower I liked was out of season. Lame! I am hoping cabbage roses will be a good substitution.

How about silk flowers and having your mother arrange them? That way you can have whatever your heart desires and it will never wilt.
