Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.

Under Which We Will Wed

August 20th, 2010 @ 6:20 pm by Mrs. Husky

After a long day at work earlier this week, I came home to be greeted by a wonderful surprise:

Mr. Husky built me an arbor to marry under! After the wedding, it will find a home in our back yard, keeping the tree branch from messing up my hair every time I walk under it.

Sometimes I think I don’t give him enough credit. Way back when, I asked him if he had any thoughts about what our altar should look like. He told me he wanted sweet autumn clematis, but that was all he really had to say on the subject.

The topic never came up again. We purchased a couple of clematis plants, and they were quickly swallowed by the jungle of weeds growing in our flower beds (but they didn’t die – thanks drip irrigation!). Fast-forward many months. The Husky-in-Laws came for a visit on the way to greet their very first grand-baby in Iowa. FMIL Husky (remember I said she’s a master gardener?) was so bored thoughtful and pulled almost all of the weeds from our garden! And the clematis plants were exposed in all of their neglected glory.

That was last week. This week I came home to a beautiful hand-built arbor! There were some, um, measurement miscalculations with the middle beam, so Mr. Husky will be fixing that in the coming days. Eventually the middle beam will sit evenly with the two outer beams. He also bought the trellises for the clematis, which will be staged on either side of the arbor:

We’ve also been thinking of doing a fabric backdrop. I’ve loved this photo for what feels like forever:

But the entrance to our barn is a sliding door, and I think the draped fabric would just look “off”. So we’re thinking about doing the fabric-drape behind the arbor.

Our next step is to figure out what color the arbor should be – painted? Stained? Left natural?

And one more of Mr. Husky admiring his handiwork:

Have you come home to any unexpected surprises, or discovered any hidden talents your fiance possessed? Outdoor brides, what are you using for your altar?

Mr. H is a sweetie! I vote for staining the arbor. The wood is too pretty to paint.

Very impressive! We are also thinking of building our own arbor/chuppah-like structure for our outdoor ceremony. When I say “we” I mean my fiance and his dad who will be doing the building. I hope it comes out as nice as yours!

That is awesome that he built an arbor for you! But, am I the only one who immediately thought of that scene in Meet the Parents when Owen Wilson has carved a wedding arbor in “about 70 hours, which isn’t bad considering I carved it out of a single block of wood.” :) Yours is beautiful!

First of all, let me say that is so sweet! I too recently have been coming home to a bunch of surprises. Recently, i came home to find the rest of he inside of our home painted, a project I had started a year ago before I even met my fiance, (i’m embarrassed about that). But he knew I wanted it done before our december wedding and we had any guests come over.

also, i came home yesterday to find that he had gotten me a sewing machine. I have been talking about wanting one for a couple of months. I thought it was super sweet. He has been very hands on with working on projects.

I love that your fiance worked on the arbor for you and surprised you! super sweet.

I love that he built this for you two and that you can use it in your backyard after the wedding! So awesome! I also think you should stain it. But not too dark.

That is brilliant! I wish Mr. G was good with that kind of stuff, we really need an arbor. I am partial to slightly aged white arbors myself. I think you should paint it to give it a bit of pop!

That is perfect! I thought it was white and loved it like that but stained a medium/lightish brown would be lovely. Oak? I think. This is what I originally wanted for our wedding, for the exact same reasons but b/c our ceremony was 1.5 hours away transportation was an issue so we went with a cheaper metal one that we decorated and then dismantled it and tossed it after the wedding for convenience’s sake. So all I have is pictures and memories….
But I’d really have rather have done what you’re doing. Wtg Mr. Husky!

My step brother is a woodworker so he’s building us an arbor to get married under. We are getting married mid-September and all he has left to do is paint it white! It looks amazing already.

The great part, we are using it for our backyard when he’s done, he’s building it wide enough and strong enough to put a swing under. He’s also building that in the next month or two. That’s our Wedding gift from him. Couldn’t be more perfect

Mr. Husky has got talent! I can’t imagine what a MR. L handcrafted arbor would look like….well at least I wouldn’t want to! LOL What a great sentiment too! Knowing that you will be wed under an arbor your man built!
