Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!

Favors

August 21st, 2010 @ 4:45 pm by Mrs. Glasses

Favors are fickle. I don’t dig, say, three cookies. Or a handful of M&Ms in a cute little box. I like practical things, like coasters, lighters, and bookmarks. Although, OK, I do have a soft spot for Jordan almonds.

So when it came down to our favors, I thought, go big or go home! What better way to show where we’ve been than providing our guests with our favorite Japanese candy?

Koala no March! Mr. Glasses and I love to eat a box of these together and show each other what these cute little koalas are getting up to. One of our first dates was sitting high up above Tokyo on the top floor of the Takashiyama department store, drinking beer from the conbini (convenience store), and laughing over the little treats.

Favors : wedding favors los angeles Pocky (source)

We love Pocky! They’ve come out with some crazy flavors over the years; Mr. G particularly likes “BITTER MEN’S POCKY” because it’s not a threat to his masculinity.

Favors : wedding favors los angeles Senbei0 (source)

Senbei is a soy-sauce flavored Japanese rice cracker that Mr. G doesn’t particularly like. I love ’em, and they are an iconic Japanese treat, so they are going in. These senbei are actually from Soka City, where my auntie lives. Soka City is famous for their senbei.

Favors : wedding favors los angeles Hi Chew (source)

Hi-Chew! They are chewy, soft candies that come in mixed flavors. When some of my girlfriends came to visit, they LOVED these.

How cute are these packages? So simple and easy to create. Perfectly on theme for a backyard wedding, too.

What favors do you like receiving at weddings?

I am a firm believer in edible favors! I have been to/been in TOO many weddings where I’ve gotten picture frames or trinket boxes.
I love all the treats you’ve chosen - especially the Pocky! I get those at Cost Plus World Market!
I think we’re doing cupcakes baked in mason jars. My dad is an accomplished baker, and he’s come up with some interesting flavor combos.
YAY food for favors!!

I love the “Men’s” Pocky too! Dark chocolate is my favorite, so it’s a no brainer.

Aww, this brings back sweet childhood memories. I’d probably squeal with delight if I received the Koala cookies, particularly the strawberry ones.

Such a great idea! I love all of those treats you have chosen, I used to eat them all growing up. My Japanese grandparents would give them to my brother and I all the time.

This is an awesome idea. :) I’d like these.

I don’t really like the tiny bag of M&Ms, either. I was looking at coasters or luggage tags or whatnot (practical!) but shelved all thought of it for a while. But I know we have to have favors… my FMIL’s eyes bugged out when I mentioned my meh-ness about them, and said we had to have them and she’d pay for them herself just so we would have them. :> I may just turn it over to her.

This is so funny, I would have never thought the first two are japanese…. you get them in every german supermarket (with different names, obviously, but exactly the same packaging and very cheap). I love the pocky, which are called Mikado in Germany.
