I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

Let’s Start Planning Again

“You’re so * insert adjective {creative… craftydetail oriented crazy}! What on earth are you going to do after the wedding and all the planning is done?”

Mr P and I got asked this question by virtually every person we knew who knew the effort and planning we were putting into our wedding.

“Plan our second wedding reception in Indiana,” we would answer. Virtually 100% of the time we were greeted with *Blink… Blink…*

And then finally the person asking would shake his or her head and smile as if to say, “you guys are certifiable.”

Forty two days ago Mr P and I had the wedding and reception of our dreams. We poured our hearts and creative juices into crafting a day that reflected us. But only a small portion of the people we hold near and dear were able to make the trip to Seattle (100 or so out of 340 invited guests) and we knew this would be the case. We aren’t sad that only a third of our invited guests celebrated with us. Wanna know why?

We are taking the party to them.

From the beginning we have planned on celebrating our marriage with our friends and family in the Midwest. We booked the second reception venue last Christmas. We looked at menus and made tentative lists. We tried to plan our decor for Seattle so it could be re-purposed at our 2nd reception. But we didn’t really have the energy or focus to plan reception number deux while preparing for the wedding. It seemed so far away (November) so we just put it off.

But now we are married, we are settling into married life and looking forward to November. This is where reality smacks me in the face. We haven’t planned much anything for our second reception. Now that the wedding dust has settled, I hate the idea of recreating our summery Seattle wedding in Indiana in November. We are back at square one, knee deep in inspiration boards and color schemes. It’s different now, though. I am a Mrs and at night we come home to the same house instead of dividing our time between two houses. We’re struggling to combine two households into one home (OMG did we have a lot of stuff) and sometimes all I want to do is snuggle with my husband instead of pursue wedding blogs for inspiration.

Slowly we are getting back into planning mode. The next few months are going to be a strange mix of posts on pre-wedding planning and details, wrestling with reception number two, and hopefully wedding recaps so I may at time appear schizophrenic. Hang with me, hive!

Are you planning two receptions? Will they be similar or different? If you are married, what did you do “after the wedding planning?”

I didn’t have two receptions. But I had a lot of luncheon before the wedding and after wedding brunch with just some of my closest and dear friends and family.

We are having a small wedding followed by a reception in another state a few weeks later. We’re doing this so we can invite all the people we can’t invite to our wedding due to the size. We’re still 8 months out, but the vision is that the 2nd reception will be more casual, but still fun. I’m looking forward to seeing what you decide on doing!

By the way, I LOVE your posts because I’m the same age as you and I am a former Seattleite. I’m in Nashville now (where I met my wonderful fiance), but I do miss Seattle immensely. I also think you seem really fun and talented and I always enjoy what you write.

If it helps, I don’t think you are crazy. We are having a Tokyo reception and an LA wedding. While the Tokyo reception is all on my mom, I understand the logic of having two. Sometimes you just have to bring the party to them. Have fun!

Yup, one is a tropical ish themed (our first wedding) in october in VA, the other is actually on the island where I grew up, where I’m pretty much just putting my mom in charge of that one….my brain can compute no new information at this time….

Aw, it kind of sounds like fun doing it again! You can use ideas that didn’t make it into your first celebration! I hope that it is less stressful =)

We’re having an immediate family only ceremony and dinner on Oct 31 in VA, then going on our honeymoon and flying back to Kentucky for a luncheon with my extended family on Nov 7, THEN having a party at a Mexican Restaurant back home in DC for friends on Nov 12. With everything but the ceremony, I’m just viewing them as meals with the people that weren’t at the ceremony, so nothing fancy, no decor, no huge wedding dress. I don’t know if you can have your Indiana party be just that: a party vs a wedding reception. I’ll tell you though, it’s made my life a lot easier to just view them as meals celebrating the wedding instead of being wedding receptions.
