All the Nervous Sleepers*

August 23rd, 2010 @ 12:34 pm by Mrs. Octopus

*Post title intended to be sung to the tune of All the Single Ladies. I was going to come up with a song parody but it turns out that I’m terrible at song parodies. So, just sing the title.

I never, ever, ever have insomnia problems. I fall asleep easily, stay sound asleep all night, and wake up feeling great in the morning.

See? Two sleepy peas in a pod!

There is just one exception to this pattern: I sleep terribly when I have a big (exciting OR nerve-wracking) event coming up the next day.

Job interview? Vacation? First day of work? Christmas (Yes, I still get that excited about Christmas, WHAT ABOUT IT)? I have a terrible time falling asleep, have crazy dreams, wake up every hour or so feeling wide awake with my mind racing, and ultimately am up for the day with no hopes of falling back asleep by 6 AM. You can connect the obvious dots here. I’d like to avoid that exhausted-with-racing-adrenaline feeling at our wedding, if it’s possible. Ideally, I hope I’ll wake up the morning of feeling refreshed, well-rested, and calm, rather than tired-but-jittery and full of nervous, spazzy energy.

I’m concocting a game plan in hopes of sleeping well the night before the wedding, and here’s what I’ve got so far:

No alcohol at the rehearsal dinner. Maybe one glass of wine early on, but that’s it. Sadly, I’ve come to learn that at the ripe old age of twenty-five, I can’t hang with the booze like I used to. Alcohol definitely does help me fall asleep, but it’s terrible for staying asleep. Being tipsy before I go to bed will only contribute to the wide-awake-every-hour phenomenon. Also, I’ve discovered the hard way that at this point, I will feel aftereffects from even a minor buzz the next morning. Gross (and my college self would be so ashamed!).

White noise. When I’m anxious and anticipating a big day, I lay in bed and my mind just races non-stop. The most frustrating is when I can’t seem to turn my brain off about the fact that I can’t sleep, and I lay there thinking, “I’m not tired yet. Oh man, I need to get tired. I need to fall asleep. How long have I been laying here? Unless I fall asleep soon, I will get less than seven hours of sleep, and then I’ll feel bad tomorrow. I need to fall asleep.” ARGH!

Playing quiet music or sounds seems to help, since it gives my brain something to focus on other than my own crazy thoughts.

Hot herbal tea and a long, hot shower. This always helps me slow down, calm down, and relax.

Candlelight Yoga. I’ve pitched this DVD here before, but I just like it so much!

Doing the stretching and deep breathing, especially in dim lighting, always makes me sleepy. I’m usually yawning uncontrollably during the guided relaxation routine at the end. It’s available on Netflix Instant, so I can easily do it in my hotel room at night using my trusty laptop.

Chemical aid/herbal supplements. This is the part where I don’t really know what I’m doing. I’m not at all against the idea of using some kind of medicine to help me get some sleep, but I’ve also never done it before. I don’t want the pendulum to swing too far in the wrong direction and feel groggy, sluggish, and out of it in the morning any more than I want to feel exhausted-hyper. If I’m going to take any kind of sleep aid, I definitely want to try it out beforehand, so I need to figure some options out soon. Mom Octopus told me that melatonin supplements are supposed to be helpful; does anyone else have an over-the-counter sleep aid to recommend?

Any other nervous sleepers out there? What are you going to do to make sure you get some rest the night before your wedding?

Melatonin is something you can get at GNC that helps me sleep. I have the same problem you do when I have something big on my mind. I’ve tried the sublingual tablets and they don’t work as well as the regular swallow ones. Try it out a few times to know how you feel the next day, I only take half a pill and sleep the night through, like magic.

Melatonin! You can get it in the vitamin section anywhere- CVS, Target, Walmart, etc! It really helps you fall asleep fast and stay asleep. It sort of gives me a similar drowsiness to Nyquil- but I don’t wake up feeling groggy like I do with normal sleep aids! You will love it!

Yes, I’ve stayed awake for over 24 hours before. I need to work of this.

AMBIEN! I wanted to be sure I got a full 10 hours of sleep the night before. It is an RX, so it’s definitely not for everyone. But it works wonders for me and pretty much gaurantees a good night’s sleep with no grogginess the next day. I have had chronic sleep issues so I’ve tried pretty much every OTC sleep aid there is and they all take over 2hrs to take affect and leave a residual hangover the next day. Ambien works almost instantly (which means you have to shut the lights out immediately after taking!) and I don’t feel any effects the next day. If you look into it, definitely try it out to see how it works for you beforehand.

Melatonin!!! I take a small dose a few nights a week when I can feel that I am not relaxed enough for bed. Take it about 45 minutes before you want to go to bed, then do a relaxing activity like reading (or candlelight yoga in your case!!). It really really helps me and is non habit forming

What the users above suggested seems to be a good idea. But make sure to have a bottle of caffeine tablets the morning of just in case ur still drowsy.

I really like melatonin or valerian. I use melatonin pretty frequently to help calm down before bed, and I don’t find that it causes me any side effects/grogginess in the AM.

Valerian is an herb that I take occasionally during stressful semesters.

Just so you know, I was up until 2 am the night before our wedding, and partying hardy. I’m usually completely worthless the day after a night like that (and I’m a nervous sleeper like you the day before a big event) but somehow, I was totally, completely fine the next day…Had a diet coke around 11:00 am and partied like a champ until 3 am post-wedding…So I’m just saying, it’s amazing what your natural adrenaline can do! Try not to stress about it too much :)

Ambien is a miracle drug. Go to your doctor, explain that you have trouble sleeping before big events and just want something to help you the night before your wedding, get the prescription, take it a couple of times for a trial run to see how you respond, and embrace and love it. It puts you right to sleep without letting you feel groggy the next morning. I highly recommend it.

Other than Ambien, my second choice would be a Tylenol PM, but make sure you’re in bed in time to get eight hours of sleep or you’ll feel drowsy the next morning.

Melatonin will help you regulate your sleep cycle - especially if you’re jet lagged. I don’t think you’ll find it very useful as a short-term sleep aid, however.

I always have success with a shoulder- or backrub right before bed.

Hi Octopus! I’m pretty much just like you in the sleeping department. Unfortunately, I did sleep horribly pretty much most of the week before the wedding. But much of it was kind of out of my control (shared room with MOH, who was on the phone with her boyfriend until late, getting up early for appointments, plus general exciting feelings). I would say if you could really limit just how much you have left to do the week of (just LOOK at P Chipz, I am seriously jealous), it would help. Also, if you would like a sleep aid suggestion, Valerian Root capsules have been known to work. I have used them before, and they were pretty good, no grogginess the next day. They are an herbal supplement.

I have this problem a lot. I found that Tylenol’s Simply Sleep works wonders for me. I usually take about 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose, which is enough to make me fall asleep and stay asleep without having the hangover/drowsy effect the next day. Be sure to test out how the medicine will effect you though, some sleep aids made me really hungover the next day (until ~5 pm) which is obviously not what you want for your wedding!

I also sleep with a fan and have a sleep mask close by since light can bother my sleep as well.

I still get excited by Christmas too! :)

I’m generally a nervous sleeper, it only gets worse the night before ‘big days.’ The yoga and tea works wonders (I think the one I have at home is by Yogi Tea, and I can’t remember the name. bedtime maybe?). I’ve found that melatonin works but makes me a little groggy in the morning, so if you go the route of sleep-aid, make sure you test it out a couple times before.

I usually sleep like the dead- after five minutes of laying down I’m out, and I don’t wake up again until five minutes before my alarm goes off. My sleep can only be interrupted by too much alcohol (hello, 4 a.m. I feel like death) or a hugely emotional event coming up. Job interviews… zzzz. Wedding… I feel like my mind will be ready to explode. I plan on melatonin, reading, and peppermint tea.

If you’re not used to taking sleep aids, definitely take it a couple times in advance to see how you react to it. I’ve taken Tylenol PM or Benadryl before if I can’t sleep and they really knock me out to the point I sleep through my alarm! Sometimes half a dose is enough for me. Just don’t try that stuff for the first time the week of the wedding.

Mr E and I are exactly the same way. And I still cant sleep the night before Christmas either :P Baths really help me, music helps him, and I try to avoid watching the tv or being on the computer too close to bed time. Reading a chapter of a book in bed sometimes helps me relax as well.

I love melatonin. It’s what your body naturally produces to help you sleep. It really is for falling asleep, so I’m pretty sure it won’t keep you asleep all night. Good Luck!

If you want to try something even gentler than melatonin (though there are all different strengths of that, so you’d probably be fine), my mom swears by calcium magnesium vitamins!
