Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).
About Mrs. Hippo

Like many modern brides, I am in love with the idea of colored shoes under a wedding dress. Although the more conservative women in my life have looked at me like I was insane when I mentioned it, I think colored shoes make for some amazing photographs, and I am determined to have at least one in my album like this:

My bridesmaids will be wearing navy blue dresses, so I want to have navy shoes to coordinate with them, not to mention that it could be my “something blue,” even though I think the whole tradition is a little silly. Anyhoo…I am REALLY trying to stick to my budget, and I have earmarked $100 for bridal shoes. Period. Clearly, there will be no Manolos for this bride, but surely I can find some sassy navy blue shoes for under a benjamin, right? Right???!?

Of course I started my shopping online, and I came across these:

Respectable design. $69. And according to Zappos, they are navy, although my eyes are telling me they are a little on the purple side. Not bad for a first pass. Those would completely work, but I’m not in love with them. Then I found these:

A little bit of bling. $89. Navy. (Are they? I see purple…is it possible to go colorblind in your thirties?) Again, these are perfectly acceptable, but they are not making me want to shout from the rooftops.

And then…

Then…

I found these lovely ladies:

Definitely more blue than purple. $80. And so very, very unique. I just might love these! Check them out:

From the back—adorable zipper, right??!???

From the side—man, that heel is high!

What’s hard to tell from online shopping is if they are incredibly sassy and fabulous or incredibly gaudy and hideous. It could really go either way. What’s a girl to do but to order them?! Luckily they had my size and I had a $10 off coupon, which basically made the shipping free.

I can’t wait until they come in, and I hope they are more fabulous than fugly. Do you think I made a good choice? And are those other shoes kinda purple, or am I losing my mind?

I think those are some definite party shoes, and what better time to party than at your wedding!?! If you love them in person, then don’t be shy to rock them on your big day.

Also, I can see purple in the top shoes, but only when I compare them to the other options. You’re not crazy. However, remember that you can’t trust monitor colors. They might be more navy than you think.

No matter what, just make sure that the shoes you pick are something that you can WEAR without crying over the foot pain. :)

Ok, I love them. I can see how you’d be on the fence, but let me give you a vote of confidence that those blingy heels are going to make for one gorgeous picture!

They’re higher up on your ankle than any of the pumps, too. So you’ll be walking solid–no altar tumbles!

I ordered the second pair, they are a pretty true navy, but alas were too narrow for my poor little feet. They were pretty in person though. Those were my second choice, but failed the walking around test. :-( Of course, my feet are wimpy and used to living in flip flops…

They look so fun and definitely ready to party. Just make sure to break those babies in - they could do some serious damage!

I wore the first ones to my wedding. They are definitely a true navy (whereas the last ones look more royal blue to me) and very cute, but they were pretty uncomfortable due to the heel height. I wore them from about 2 p.m. (when we started pictures) to 7 p.m. (after the ceremony) and then immediately changed into navy Chucks. My feet were thankful!

Miss Hippo, when browsing through shoes for myself to wear I spotted these and thought of you. Kind of a cross between the two styles you’re looking at, come in navy, and under $100!

Oooh, I think they’re seksi! Love that zipper detail. Does look pretty high though, perhaps a shoe change for dancing?

Sorry, Hippo, can’t join u on the purple shoe train. I just don’t see it ;)

Aw, yay! I have those green shoes in the first photo, they’re awesome. I vote gaudy, when else in your life can you get away with something that fancy??

It’s likely the purple is your monitor color - so don’t worry until you see them in person :)

The first two look true navy to me, whereas the last one looks like blue blue wiht maybe a hint of green or teal. It must be your monitor. I actually looooove the first ones.

I do not personally care for the third pair, but I have a very strong tendency toward the simple and un-bedazzled, so if you love them, go for it! It’s your day!

@heysuga: They come in nude, taupe and black. Looks like they don’t even have the blue anymore! Good thing I got them when I did! Here’s the link of DSW: http://www.dsw.com/shoe/sm+luxe+icing+sandal?prodId=206115&productRef=SEARCH

@jami_lynn: Thanks so much for thinking of me! I actually saw those online too, but I just wasn’t sure. Argh! Who would have thought this would be so hard!

I think gaudy is sassy/fabulous if you rock it!
