Mrs. Barrettes's Picture
Mrs. Barrettes, Tumon, Guam/Napa, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Dancer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Licensed Building Contractor Engagement Date: November 16, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: V. Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!

Let's Talk Tats, Part Deux : wedding beauty napa Dsc0292 DSC0292

I have been preparing myself to change my last name. Sometimes I think it’s no big deal, and other times I struggle with becoming “my new name.” It’s a lot of n’s—five to be exact. I have practiced writing my new name (much like I did when I was in sixth grade with my crush’s name) and haven’t gotten it down to a science just yet. I miss making the capital “H”of my current name.

So as we sat at the pool yesterday for Bridesmaid Amy’s birthday and Mr. B was preparing to start his latest chest piece, I starting drawing H’s on our pizza box, and it hit me—I would get my capital H, in my own handwriting, as a way to keep that part of myself.

At the shop, the artist told me that actually my H was quite hard to tattoo. With such distinctive lines and curves, he said it would be like a final exam if one was a student of tattoo art. I didn’t want much embellishment; I know my tattoo style is “less is more.” (You may recall my wrist tattoo botch-up.) I was rEEEEEally happy with the result.

Yay!!!! It came out sooo well! Growing up we lived on an “H” street in an “H” town, so its a bit of a nod to that as well. All my other tats are pretty discreet; this is my first piece that is all-out visible. I felt a little bit gansta this morning when I woke up and saw my shoulder tat! I’m so hardcore! =)

Well a cursive H is hardly hardcore, but you know what I mean.

That sounds like a great idea! My last name is with an A, and its my favorite part of my signature too, I’ve been developing that capital A for 25 years! I think I may do this too, after the wedding to help say goodbye :)

I’ve been wanting a tattoo for ages, but as a designer, I can never hammer down what I want! I love that you draw yours, it’s nice to have an extra piece of yourself on display. Now if I could just make up my mind…

I have a rosary around my ankle and I want to get my grandfathers last name, my last name, and my fiancee’s last name added to the back of the chain like charms. I can’t wait. I’m not really that attached to my name but this way it will always be a part of me.

I miss my capital “H” as well! Actually, I’ve legally changed my name, but I still sign it the old way because I can’t part with my H. Luckily, the following letters are indecipherable so people are (pretty much) none the wiser ;)

i wouldn’t think of “H” as a particularly swirly/beautiful letter, but wow did you just prove me wrong. that is absolutely gorgeous.

i’m a fan of my “L” last name. i love writing capital L. so i’m keeping it. hah. :)

Soon after I got engaged I got a tattoo of my last name. It was a way of always being able to keep a piece of who I really am and where I come from. Plus, my father had two girls so it’s the end of the family name for us. I love my tattoo. It looks like this:
T <3 LAST NAME <3 A

The T & A (ironic I know) are my first two initials and A happens to be my sisters name too so it all worked out!

i think this is a very cool idea, although i don’t really understand people who think they are losing a sense of themselves when they get married and change their name… arent u still the same person? i know i’d still look, act, think and be the same sarah if you re-named me melissa…

I don’t have a tattoo - not because I am opposed to them but more because there isn’t anything I really love enough to have as a part of my body forever. But I love that you incorporated your name (and other “H” parts of your history) in your own writing. You write such a beautiful H! Great idea! It looks awesome :)

Oh my goodness!! Your story brought tears to my eyes… I too tattoo’d my last name initial on me. Everyone was like why would you do that when you are about to change your name… no one really understood!! =) Perfect tattoo and I LOVE the meaning behind it!!

The H looks amazing!! I love that it made such a beautiful tattoo! It’s big but delicate at the same time.

That is a lovely H. :) I really like the paler embellishment lines. Simple but very effective.

I’m come to the conclusion I don’t want to change my name, even though I like his and think it would go just fine with my first name. My name’s just who I am… and I really like my signature, too! :> (Other people have commented on how cool my signature is, and most of the signing coolness is in my last name.)

@Baileyh: Aww that’s sweet! Glad I could inspire u :)

@Miss Sand Dollar: In my experience, once you have a decent idea, u just gotta go for it. And drawing it myself has made all the difference!

@Mrs. Quiche: Thats funny that you still sign ur name the same way. I might just do the same thing. Mr. Barrrettes signature is barely legible anyway… ;)

@bakerysensei: oooh, I love a good swirly L!

@soontobeMrsThomas: Great minds think alike ;)

@marieta: Thanks! The embellishments the artist added really do make a difference. Keep ur coolness gurl!

I’m marrying into a capital H and I haven’t found one I liked — but yours is beautiful! I’m going to bookmark this picture and copy your H later when I have time.

Weird? Yes, I admit it is.

BUT you have no idea how happy it made me to see a beautiful H - the ones I learned to write as a kid are so awkward looking!
