Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

Yum… That Is All: Part 1

August 23rd, 2010 @ 10:45 am by Mrs. Knitting

It’s not a very nice day in Toronto today. It’s kind of cold and rainy and just all round not so nice. It’s making me feel a bit blah, so I’ve decided that it is the perfect time to talk about comfort food. While I love comfort food all the time, there’s something about a gross rainy day that makes looking at pictures of yummy food feel especially appropriate.

Random picture of a recipe I want to try soon:

I love the idea of having some type of comfort food appearing at our wedding as a late night snack and over the next few days I’ll be sharing a few of my favourite ideas.

I’m not sure if any of these ideas will be making an appearance at our wedding, as I’m still in the brainstorming stage. I actually suspect they might not because I think they’re all as potentially messy as a DIY cupcake bar and I’m not allowed that. No, I’m not bitter about that at all…

Anyway, on to some amazing food! Today I want to talk about french fry bars.

Despite my generally healthy diet, I love fried food. I don’t eat it very often but I pretty much think everything fried tastes amazing. Knowing this you can imagine how excited I was when I heard my friend’s sister was having a french fry bar as a late night snack at her wedding. I had no idea people did this. I’m quite sad I’ve never been to a wedding with a french fry bar.

Amazing:

I’d also never say no to some sweet potato fries:

I love this idea. One of my favourite summer treats is having french fries from a truck. Ideally I get them from a truck on the beach, but I often settle for The Blue Chip Truck in Toronto.

Suffice it to say, I’m not one to turn down french fries. French fries plus amazing toppings? Even better.

Here’s a few toppings I’d consider serving.

Aioli:

Cheese curds and gravy (I am Canadian after all!):

Pesto Mayo:

The classic:

What kind of toppings would you include in a french fry bar?

This is random but Red Robin restaurants (not sure if they have locations in Canada) have the best seasoning to put on their fries. They have places online that have recipes to make the seasoning at home.

OMG I’m totally hungry now. A french fry bar sounds delish! I’d put some chili and cheese on those suckers!

Garlic! Lots of garlic! But I don’t think that would bode well at a wedding.

Mmm…cheese curds and gravy. Yum. I’d also have to include apple cider vinegar. Seriously, my mouth is watering just thinking about this.

Fry Sauce! It’s a Utah thing but it is an absolute must for french fries. It’s basically 1 part ketchup and 2 parts mayo mixed together lots of restaurants will add a little spice or lemon/pickle juice. Sounds nasty but once you eat it you will never go back.

I love how every area seems to have their own must have for french fries.

Fries + Aioli = DELICIOUS! I also second Mrs. Sew’s ice cream idea. Personally, I prefer dipping them in chocolate ice cream, but I am sure vanilla is pretty good too.
