About Mrs. Taco

Wedding Apocrypha

August 23rd, 2010 @ 4:15 pm by Mrs. Taco

I’ve been married for almost a week, and it’s the best thing ever. Things will go wrong, surely, but things will also go well. I’m never getting off this ride!

Anyway, we’ve been thinking about all the ideas we had over our 15-month engagement. Some of them made it, some of them were altered, and some of them ended up on the cutting-room floor.

So it goes. For example, for a while there, we talked about having readings as part of our ceremony. When pitching this idea, our friend said readings are a way to contextualize our ceremony and our union for the guests. Mr. Taco and I were always hesitant toward the idea, mostly because we couldn’t think of what, exactly, to read. We thought long and hard about it, worried that, maybe, we were missing out somehow by not including one. Though we opted against one, there were a few contenders. We leaned most heavily toward songs, including the lyrics to one Talking Heads’ song, “This Must Be The Place” (Naive Melody). Here they are:

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - born with a weak heart
I guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It’s OK, I know nothing’s wrong… nothing

I got plenty of time
You got light in your eyes
And you’re standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up and say goodnight… say goodnight

Home is where I want to be
But I guess I’m already there
I come home - she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can’t tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time before we were born
If someone asks, this is where I’ll be…. where I’ll be

We drift in and out
Sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I’m just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I’m dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head

Beautiful. We thought it was poignant, accessible, and just funky enough; but everything was just as well without it. I promise to recap more interestingly soon!

What’s the verdict out there; reading or no reading?

Definitely have a reading and that’s a really great song. Our reading was what guests commented on most about the ceremony.

I really enjoy the readings, although I have to admit I’m always more excited when it’s a less heard reading. I hope not to offend anyone, but as much as I like Corinthians, I’ve heard it at nearly every single wedding I’ve been to, so I’m always more interested when the bride and groom choose something more unique.

That is, hands down, my favorite song. I love the idea of having it for a reading!

We had a really short reading to start the ceremony off that I absolutely LOVED- it was Rumi’s A Moment of Happiness…So I vote for a reading, as long as it’s short and meaningful!

We’ll have two readings at our wedding. I’m looking forward to hearing them on the big day.

We’re having 2 readings - one has to be from the Bible (we’re using Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) and the other one was our choice. We chose “Union,” by Robert Fulghum. I always look forward to seeing what couples choose for their readings.

Very pro-readings. We had a hard time narrowing down the huge document full of poignant readings we collected over the year + of our engagement down to two Bible verses and two poems, which is on the long side all total. And Merry02, I agree, I love 1 Corinthians 13:4 as well, but in the end we passed on it because it is so very overused. We opted for passages from Ruth and Song of Solomon instead, and our pastor did a beautiful job of explaining how the Ruth passage related to the story of our past together.

I so love this song!!! Actually, it is our first dance song. While I love the orginal by the Talking Heads and I fought long and hard to have the original version…My poor fiance is not a man with alot fancy foot work, so we choose a cover which was slower.

Hoping to do a reading or two since it will be a non-religious ceremony. We’d like something meaningful and personal to fill the time/space.

I love that song–it’s one of my picks for our first dance. And I’m pro readings. One religious and one secular, at least. Hopefully our officiants go along with that.
