Shut the Front Door!

August 23rd, 2010 @ 3:33 pm by Mrs. Glasses

…is what I said when I got the original quote from the only prospective caterer that will e-mail me back.

Since they are the only caterer with fingers for typing (apparently), I guess we are going with $45 a head total for appetizers, salads, a buffet, and a small dessert. Uuuuugly. Here I was thinking we could keep everything under $30 a head.

One caterer also included a quote for rentals through him. Tables, chairs, linens, silverware, glassware, and all that. Here’s the lovely quote we got for just glassware:

Champagne flutes, beer glasses, wine glasses, and soda/fruit juice glasses:

$214.96

Really? Really? REAAAALLY?! Four types of glasses?

Um, negative. Unnecessary. No.
Needless to say, we trimmed our quote down to just food, service, and gratuity. We found a party rental company in L.A. where we can get all the rental stuff for way cheaper. My parents went to go check them out today, in person, to see if they were legitimate. I guess it worked out alright because my mom sent me a hilariously fobby e-mail detailing what she thought we’d need, things like: “50 folks” (forks), “5 pro pain heaters,” and “bar stand help yourself type.”

She shrewdly reduced our glassware to all-purpose goblets and champagne flutes. Little does she know, I’ve got a different idea in mind.

Around Southern California, we’ve got a great BBQ place called Lucille’s. I love their tri-tip sandwiches, baked beans, and cocktails. At Lucille’s, you drink all of your drinks out of Mason jars. I thought the idea was sooooo cute that when I moved into my very own first apartment, all our cups were Mason jars.

I love, love, love this picture.

I am off to do a furious search for 50 drinking Mason jars in the L.A. area.

What kinds of things have you been surprised by in this wacky wedding world?

I love the mason jars, but what does someone do if they want to change their type of drink? Pouring beer into a cup that juice in it, for example, would be a little gross. Do you have someone rinsing them for people who want to switch things up?

Two of our friends, who were just married in July, had what they called “muglies” for their wedding. They went to various thrift shops around town and bought the stupidest, funniest, and most old-school mugs they could find, and let everyone pick the one they wanted to drink from for the duration of the reception. It was pretty funny reading everyone’s mugs, because they said things like, “My Grandma went to Orlando and all I got was this mug” or “Don’t talk to me until this mug is empty”, which, while intended for coffee, worked pretty well for wine, too :)

I think you’re supposed to estimate around 4 glasses per guest for rentals, just so ya know! I love the mason jar idea tho, and it can still be done for very cheap!

I guess I’m the strange one…cause I can’t stand drinking out of a mason jar! We live about as far in the country as you possibly can..but I just never liked it. And what do guest do with their drinks if they don’t like it or want to change it up?

Your mom is the best. I want a pro pain heater for whenever Mr. SD pushes my buttons!! And I’ve fallen in love with mason jars too, so great minds must think alike ;)

I’m laughing so hard reading the “my mom is a fob” website that I’m almost crying. At work.

I am right there with you on the cost of rentals! (and I also have that image saved) Mason jars are so cheap and easy, you can get a dozen for like ten dollars.

I’m buying mine from here: http://www.sks-bottle.com/340c/fin36i.html because you can get them by the case without the lids for even less money!

@naangel55: It’s the polite version of “shut the *f* up”….did you ever watch What Not to Wear? Stacey London used to say it on there all the time :-)

I’m not sure what kind of food you have in mind, we’re doing a BBQ/casual type reception, but Lucille’s does catering for a lot cheaper then $45 a head. We considered them when nailing down a caterer.

My FI loves loves loves mason jars as glasses, and we’re hoping to have Paradise Rose Chuckwagon cater out reception. The mason jars would fit in perfectly :) I’m going to have to save that image! I’m not sure what wine drinkers will do though, I’m a wine girl, my parents have a pinot noir vineyard. I guess I’ll have to try wine in a mason jar tonight, lol!
Such a cute idea!

I wish I read your blog before we got married. My husband and I are also English teachers in Korea that planned an LA wedding. We had an outdoor wedding with cherry blossoms and I had a bouquet with peonies and ranunculas! Let me know if you want to see some pictures. I’ll pm you.

Target has mason jars on clearance right now, 30% off! I have a feeling you live in the South Bay area (torrance, maybe?) and I saw them there this weekend!

I must be looking at the wrong caterers, because I haven’t gotten a quote under $70 a head yet!

@mundaetraversa: That is awesome! Umm, forget the mason jars!

@Mrs. Trail Mix: Trail Mix, I really don’t GET it. I can just see myself sitting there with 4 glasses on my table - just like having 4 different sized forks. I don’t need all that hoity toity!

@gcwest: Thank you for the link!

@jami_lynn: We are having a very specialized meal for Mr. G. It’s an English roast, and not a lot of catering companies do it. We are willing to pay :D

@Chloe: Please PM me pictures of your wedding! I’d love to see them!
