It was my 21st birthday over the weekend! I didn’t want to get a car for it, and I didn’t want a huge party. I wanted this: A Bernina Bernette 66. I call her Bernadette.
Pretty cool, eh? I have been using various sewing machines since I was 13, but never had my own until now. For the last three years I have had to stick to hand-sewing everything because I didn’t have access to anyone’s machine, but now I’m spoiled to be able to use this whenever I want! She isn’t too fancy but she is just perfect for all the projects I want to get started on, especially wedding projects!
So what is Bernadette’s virgin project?
Well, a few weeks ago we stopped by a little fabric store that was having a closing down sale and picked up these pretty fabrics:
Your remember how I couldn’t decide what to dress our venue’s naked trees with here and here ? Probably not, but hey. Well, finding these fabrics helped me decide: the trees will wear good ol’ bunting! Yeah, it is in so many weddings these days. But who cares. It is cute, fun to make (despite my initial reservations that I would be too lazy to make it), brings another fabric element into the day, and is effective.
I have been using this tutorial from Oncewed as the basis for my bunting endeavours, with some of my own variations to make the process simpler. That is, my mum laughed at me for getting all tangled in the string when I tried to sew it on to the triangles, so instead I am folding over the top bit of each triangle once, and sewing it down to make a channel that I can thread the string through once all the triangles are finished. The bonus of this method is that I can rearrange triangles if I change my mind about what order I want them in (Who me, changing my mind? Never).
Here are my lovely triangles, all cut out with pinking shears and ready to be sewn. The white triangles are from a wide roll of vintage lace that I decided to make into bunting as well:
So, the wedding projects are well and truly on a roll now with the advent of the sewing machine—at least when I am at my parents’ place anyway (I won’t move the sewing machine to my place until after the wedding).
What sewing projects for your wedding (if any) have you been tackling lately? Oh, and can I show off another pic of my sewing machine?
OK, show and tell is over now.
