Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

I’ve talked again and again about how Mr. Cardigan and I want to make our wedding meaningful and personal. However, most of the things that I’ve talked about so far have more to do with decorations and traditions than the actual ceremony itself. Lest you think that we don’t care about the ceremony, I figure it’s about time to tell you how we’re going to make the ceremony as special and unique to us as we possibly can.

One of my favorite personal touches we’re adding to the ceremony is our reading. Originally, I never planned on having any readings during our ceremony at all—I hadn’t ever seen one I really liked, and most of the ones I had heard were very stuffy and formal, and just not us at all. But then, I heard this poem. And before I share it, I want to say that I know it’s not the most unique choice out there—this poem has really blown up in the wedding world over the past year or so. But it’s so incredibly fitting for us.

We’re having Sandol Stoddard Warburg’s I Like You read.

Personalizing the Ceremony, Part 1 : wedding austin ceremony reading 51z2b

Why I Like You? Well, first of all because when I saw the video of Mrs. Candy Corn’s brother reading it at her ceremony, I cried. I bawled like a little baby—every time I watched it… which was many times. I fell in love with the poem from the first time I heard it, and I knew it fit us perfectly.

In the beginning stages of our relationship, when Mr. Cardy and I were still unsure of where things were heading, we often told each other, “I like you!” instead of using the big “L” word. We would watch this cute little video over and over and laugh every time - we both had the whole thing memorized and would often repeat it to one another randomly.

And when Mr. Cardigan finally got up the courage to tell me he loved me, I wasn’t 100% ready to say it back. So, I continued to tell him I liked him. That little phrase, “I like you,” was such a huge and integral part of the first year of our relationship, and it makes me smile every time I hear it. I love that it will be repeated on our wedding day.

I’m sure most of you have heard the poem many times by now, so I won’t share the entire thing. We haven’t cut it down to what we’ll be using for sure yet, but I thought I could at least share a few of my favorite lines that I know we will include.

I like you because you know where I’m ticklish

And you don’t tickle me there except just a little tiny bit sometimes.
But if you do, then I know where to tickle you too.
You know how to be silly,
That’s why I like you.
Boy are you ever silly.
I never met anybody sillier than me till I met you.

And I like you because when I am feeling sad

You don’t always cheer me up right away
Sometimes it is better to be sad.
You can’t stand the others being so googly and gaggly every single minute
You want to think about things
It takes time.

I like you because if I am mad at you

Then you are mad at me too.
It’s awful when the other person isn’t.
They are so nice and hoo-hoo you could just about punch them in the nose.

Even if it was way down at the bottom of November

Even if it was no place particular in January
I would go on choosing you
And you would go on choosing me
Over and over again
That’s how it would happen every time.

Oh man, it makes me tear up even just reading it. Anyone who knows Mr. Cardy and me well knows that this poem fits us perfectly. It’s a little romantic and very silly. It’s fun, and whimsical, and sweet. I can’t wait to hear it read at our wedding!

Are you having any ceremony readings? What are they?

We’re also using this reading.
As well as e.e. cummings “I carry your heart”.
Because both just feel like us. I cry when I read them. Every time.

Very sweet! I adore that you used “I like you” early in your relationship..for us it was “I heart you”!

This was our reading as well! We split up the stanzas and alternated reading them… Even though we’d practiced, I still couldn’t get through this part

I would go on choosing you
And you would go on choosing me
Over and over again

without choking up! Still kind of gets me just reading it…

Anyway, needless to say, I think this is a great choice :)

I love that book too but for a different reason- my grandmother gave it to me years ago before she passed away. I still have it, with a little inscription in the front signed by her, and take it with me almost everywhere. I’ve always thought it would make a great wedding reading too :)

I love this book. There is one line we want to use, but we have no idea how to incorporate it!

oh my goodness!!!!! i know that this is so much later than you posted this, but i literally just gasped when i found this post! i am searching for all sorts of inspiration for our ceremony and came across this post and the funny thing is - a reading from “i like you” is the ONLY thing that we have already decided on! - we were over my mothers about a month ago and i was going through old things when i found this book and we both knew that it had to be inclueded! i actually worried it was a bit weird, but if a bee (and one as amazing as you miss cardy) used it, i am doubly sold! yay!
