About Mrs. Pin Cushion

The faux-to booth posts live on! Due to overwhelming demand (hundreds of requests [or perhaps just a few commenters] on the last how-to post), I’m back to explain a bit more about how we set up the DIY photo booth.

Faux-to Booth: How-To Continued : wedding diy oakland photography Dsc 230

Our best man, Virat, can hardly contain his excitement about the faux-to booth!

Total cost: about $46.

  • Fabric: $16 for 2 yards (which you could get for cheaper, but I liked my IKEA fabric)
  • PVC Pipe: $10 for the long pieces
  • Small PVC Pipe Fittings: $5 for the caps, t-pieces and elbows
  • Props (bought from a party supply store and made with crafty leftovers): $15

Other items we used:

  • Our own point and shoot camera
  • A camera tripod (our photographer lent us one of hers—ask yours if they have one you can use, or ask your family or amigos if they have one)
  • Instruction sheet with very very basic directions for our guests

Here are a few photos to help explain our set-up:

The camera was set on the tripod about 6 feet back from the fabric. We played around with the height and distance of the camera to try to get the most out of the backdrop. We also had to consider our guests, who ranged in height from 4’11″ to 6’8″!

Check out the smoothness of that fabric. Nice. My bridesmaid came up with the idea of ironing the fabric, then wrapping it around a wrapping paper tube in order to transport it to the venue (Genius! [I hope some of her smarts rub off on me]).

Running (wo)man! You can see the base of the stand here.

View from the backdrop-side: the camera on the tripod, with props and instructions set up on the railing (a table would work just dandy).

So there you have it. Any questions? I promise I don’t bite (well, unless you have some dessert in your hand, and I try to bite that and then bite your finger in the process [but who could blame me for that?!]).

(All photos in this post are guest photographs [thanks, friends!])

such a great idea. I had relegated my dreams of a fauxtobooth to the “cant be bothered” pile but this post tempts me to revive them again. Hmm.

I had totally written off a fauxtobooth as “not in the budget,” but now….hmm…. I could totally pull this off!!

I love the framed directions. :) The only thing our photobooth was lacking was directions for people to look at the camera instead of at the laptop where they pressed the button - many of the photos feature people looking to the side! They’re hilarious anyway, I love them.

We also did a DIY photobooth! We hung our fabric on a dowel rod that we hung up against a wall at the venue.

We also used a camera remote which allowed people to take photos of themselves. They makes remotes that work with most cameras and they cost around $15-20.

What is your plan to get the pictures to your guests? Are you going to post the images to a site for your guests to see?

@jami_lynn: We are printing them out and sending some out with the thank you cards.

If anyone wants our PVC pipe and fabric for their own set up, let me know! It’s just sitting around at this point.

I’m with Earrings. I really thought I wouldn’t do a fauxto booth but now that I have a behind the scenes look at how one is executed my wheels are turning (or is it spinning? I’ve been living in Japan for too long me no speaky the English good no more so sorry!). Ummm, yo, I’m comig up to the bay area in October, think I can get that stuff on a plane? I knew we should have driven…

Gosh this is so incredibly simple and well executed! I used a professional photo booth but this is so sweet I think I’ll try and use it for another event. I think the biggest fear is havign people handle your camera, but with this setup it is all in one place and people can only really push one button. It’s genius!

Yep, we are go on this one. I was in the hardware this evening, and PVC piping is real cheap here too, funny enough! 20 euro should do it, and prob another 20 for fabric, so approx $50 altogether!

Poor FI really doesn’t realise how much money this little post may save us… and Groomsmen A&P don’t know they’re the ones putting it all together day of, haha! But it’s virtually idiot proof, thank God!

Yay! We get to have lots of drunken silly moustache pics!!

Did you stitch the fabric, or use ties? I’m still trying to simplify, hahaha!
