I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

Yum… That Is All: Part 2

August 24th, 2010 @ 2:19 pm by Mrs. Knitting

This is part two of my comfort food series and today I’d like to talk about hot chocolate. As you might recall, one of our main goals for the wedding is to make it as cozy as possible, and what could be more cozy than offering our guests hot chocolate?

Look how yummy:

My favourite way of incorporating hot chocolate into our wedding is by having a hot chocolate bar. Basically, we would have mugs of hot chocolate available along with a variety of toppings and garnishes, so our guests would be able to craft their ideal drinks. Here’s a few toppings I think would be amazing:

Marshmallows

I am now pretty in love with the idea of a hot chocolate bar and think that this would be so much fun. I’d love to serve this to our guests as a late night snack along with some gingerbread loaf. However, I suspect my venue would be worried about this potentially being too messy. I’m thinking as a compromise it might work to serve this before the ceremony when no one will be the slightest bit drunk and therefore there will be less risk of our guests flinging whipped cream at each other. We have been planning to serve apple cider at this point, but I think we might look into the possibility of serving the hot chocolate bar.

On a side note, I’m finding it a bit frustrating that we can’t just go ahead and plan whatever we want because our  venue is worried about things getting too messy. I’m pretty jealous of brides with backyard ceremonies at the moment!

Another fun way to incorporate hot chocolate into a winter wedding is by giving out hot chocolate mix as a favour. If we hadn’t decided on jam as a favour, this is definitely what we would have gone with. Look how adorable it can be:

And now, despite the fact that it’s the middle of August, I could really go for a mug of hot chocolate.

What toppings would you include in a hot chocolate bar?

This is a great idea. I love it. Hot Chocoloate is a great way to end the night. I hope your compromise works out!

Oh I always love peppermint sticks but the SQUARE MARSHMELLOWS were super cute.

I was gonna make a cup of tea but I think it just became a cup of hot chocolate! :-D

Sounds so cosy. I’d definitely be excited to find this as a guest.

Other classic additions would be expresso shots or grand marnier

Cinnamon sticks do not add so much flavor unless they steep for a long time, and they can be sort of pricy. Would you consider doing a shaker of ground cinnamon or cinnamon-sugar instead? You could also do ground nutmeg. A really good Mexican-style mix is cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of cayenne or chili powder.

I don’t see how a hot chocolate bar would be any more messy than a regular coffee bar, or even serving coffee from a carafe for that matter… I can’t see how it’s any more messy than cake either, for that matter.

It seems like your venue is second-guessing the maturity level of your guests or something.

And I would totally put one of those chocolate/mint sticks in my cup!

We’re actually doing a hot chocolate bar. :D

In addition to the toppings you said, we’re adding in chili powder, caramels, vanilla, and chocolates (for those who like it extra chocolately)

I can’t wait!!

This made me salivate. A wedding I attended had homemade heart shaped marshmallows for hot cocoa at the brunch for out of towners!!! Yum! (who had the time for that one?!?!?)

Such a cute idea! If I was getting married in the winter I’d definitely do hot chocolate as a favor!

What a fantastic idea! I’m excited about your hot apple cider as well, I vote definitely have both. Boo for venues with fussy rules! Ours was the total opposite, they didn’t even have any staff onsite during our wedding, so as long as we didn’t do anything to forfeit our damage deposit, we were okay!

I work at a reception center and this can be a mess especially if there are any kids (or adults who never grew up) in attendance. My advice to make it less of a mess, have someone who fills the cups and have the guests put the topping on. Favorite toppings for hot cocoa vanilla bean sugar and cinnamon in a shaker.

I really wanted to have churros con chocolate as one of my desserts. It is churros dipped in Spanish hot chocolate (very thick and dark). Similar to how donuts are dipped in coffee. So so good!

I actually hired a Coffee bar for the reception and it was wonderful! Two ladies manned it and provided three different coffees (that I pre-chose) and hot chocolate for the non-coffee drinkers. It was relatively cheap for everything they did. They were so nice that guests spent some of the time just chatting with them and they even got us a wedding gift! There was no clean up on our part either!
