Mrs. Locket's Picture
Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).

Murphy’s Law of Wedding Planning

August 24th, 2010 @ 5:29 pm by Mrs. Locket

…aka, my Debbie Downer post.

Murphy’s Law of Wedding Planning : wedding emotional ithaca 110909

Source

My main reason for writing this post is to feed comfort to fellow brides/grooms/planners who have had less-than-perfect planning experiences.

As you may have guessed from my prior posts about family and financial issues, my planning process has been filled with many a road block. To say the least, those two issues were just the tip of the iceberg.

In our planning process we’ve been faced with other issues as well, and here’s that list:

  • We booked our DJ in May, but he double booked us a couple of weeks later and left us in a lurch (fortunately, he’s been replaced).
  • Bridesmaid “S” had to back out of the bridal party.
  • A few months later “S” is back in, but in desperate search for a dress
  • My YUDU fail
  • Mr. L was laid off twice this year.
  • A few months ago all my brothers decided to gang up on Mr. L and it was not a happy time (fortunately the air has cleared).
  • My parents have decided to separate.
  • One of my younger brothers has sided with my father and won’t be in attendance on our wedding day.
  • My youngest brother was in a very serious car accident a couple weeks ago. Fortunately he is doing much better and his scars are healing, but this has left my mom without a car and many extra expenses.
  • Due to budget cuts we were forced to cut some of our guests.
  • Google docs saved the wrong copy of my updated list and we missed sending invites to some guests (fortunately this was fixed soon after invites were sent).
  • In our initial cake consult we were told a certain design could be done only to find out later that it couldn’t.

Now, don’t get me wrong…this list could be a lot worse and I know that I am lucky to have not faced more tragic issues. In retrospect, it’s probably better that these things have happened.

They’ve made me a stronger, much more resilient person and I have learned that I am capable of getting through the tough times that life throws at me. I’ve also learned that Mr. L is truly my rock.

He has been there for every emotional outbreak and fit of frustration. And, on the plus side, there have been many positive things happening to offset the negative. I have accepted the fact that planning a wedding isn’t devoid of error and that I should expect the same for our wedding day. Things will probably go wrong. The best that I can do is roll with the punches.

Have you been hit by Murphy’s Law?

I think this stuff happens to all of us. I have had several mishaps. One the fail DIY invites-what a joke!! Catering attempting to squeeze in an exta 5k into the contract…That was a no go. And finally stress induced hives…yeah and I have 2 months to go and they arent going any where!!!

I had a big road block right away. I had just booked the venue for this fall, and the next day my fiance found out he was getting deployed in July AKA no wedding this fall!! Luckily my venue was amazing about the whole thing and it worked out in the end…we have it booked for next fall instead :) Hope the dust settles for you! Good luck!

That is a lot of things to deal with, Locket, but it’s good to know that everything has brought you and Mr. L even closer. Everything happens for a reason, and maybe that’s the reason…?

I’m so sorry Ms. Locket, tension within the family is never easy. Especially when it is supposed to be the happiest time!

My fiance and I have had a bumpy engagement as well, including parents getting divorced and me being laid off amongst other things. It has gotten to the point where we can laugh about it all, and to think if we can get through all of this before we are married, our marriage will be rock solid. Just like yours!

Hang in there!

xoxo

Not like you. JEEZ. I am sorry to hear of all of your trials & tribulations. Hat’s off to you for remaining so together. Your family should put their differences aside for your wedding (mine did) b/c they WILL regret it. Much love & luck, Locket.

*HUGS* Sounds like you’ve had a really rough year. I’m glad you are stronger and more confident in your relationship with Mr. L. That is the big girl way of looking at things. Soon you will be married and it will be wonderful :)

Ah man, that is a lot of life changes and dramas to deal with all in one year! I hope the rest of planning goes smoothly and you and Mr. Locket can lean on one another.

Wow Miss Locket that’s a lot to deal with at anytime let alone while planning a wedding. It seems to me that you have a positive attitude and I am a firm believer that that will get you far. Keep on trucking and I’m sure it will all work its self out. I think I can speak for the hive when I say we are all sending good vibes your way.

Wow that seems more than what anyone should have to deal with. So far mine is my parents trying very hard to influence my venue location / style of wedding and wanting to invite a zillion people, and the fiancee’s grandma wanting to invite 90 by herself.

Sorry to hear that. We’ve had a lot of crap dumped upon us in the run-up to the wedding too, but all that matters in the end is your love for each other and your resilience as a couple. Big hugs, chin up, and hang in there!
