Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
About Mrs. Glasses

Pifts, aka Please Give Us Stuff

August 24th, 2010 @ 2:40 pm by Mrs. Glasses

Pifts, aka Please Give Us Stuff : wedding los angeles registry 35317 6 In Japanese, the word gift is almost always “PURESENTO.” So GIFT + PRESENT = PIFT. Bless his six-year-old heart. I gave him a gold star for the excellent coloring!

We have two wedding registries. Let’s not pussyfoot around the subject—we need the stuff. We are coming back to America with nothing. Nada. Zero. All of our furniture here is rented through our apartment agency, and we are leaving all our furniture and crap behind. We absolutely need all the help we can get in replenishing our household goods.
We are registered at:

Le Target. This is for all our traditionalists. The ones who like to go into the shop, examine the quality and colors, and walk out with something tangible to bring to the wedding.

Our Amazon.com registry is for our tech-savvy guests who like to do their shopping online. It’s also convenient for our international guests, friends, and family.

We guided people to our wedding website on our save the dates and in a small insert with our invitation suites, where they can find links to our registries.

So, what kind of stuff are we looking for? Aside from the usual, here is some of the more interesting stuff we’ve decided on:

Why yes, those are coasters from English pubs. We made sure to register for things in different price points, even small kitchen tools under $10, so that our guests can mix and match what they’d like to buy or factor in how much they can afford to contribute. We’ll be very grateful for anything we receive, of course. And we’ve already started to receive…Hello Kitty toaster, check!

Since we can’t actually go to any stores to register, we missed out on the whole fun scan gun thingy. But you know one thing that rocks about registering online? The reviews. People review anything online. And it’s all so helpful! We tried to choose the products that got the most stars and are the most popular to buy. We even watched the products in action; Amazon.com lets customers upload video reviews! We seriously watched a review (the whole thing!) of the kitchen towels we chose. If you’ve registered at a store with online product reviews, I highly recommend you look them up. We made sure we registered for quality products this way.

Did you have a positive wedding-registry experience? Where are you registered? What was your registry strategy?

We used Amazon.com but in the end because we had a destination wedding and his family bitched about having to fly, travel costs yadda yadda, we never gave out our registry info. haha

I love Amazon!!

YES! We did the traditional (Macy’s) and the modern (Amazon) too. I had fun with the scan gun (wait, I should say, Adam had fun with the scan gun) but mostly I just LOVED the registry guy at the Macy’s we went to (downtown crossing, Boston, Andrew Jackson is his name. Like the president!) He was so, so helpful and nice, and when my grandmother called the day AFTER the friends and family 25% off sale, he gave her the discount anyway. LOVE.

We said forget it to the gun experience, even though others have said it was the most fun thing ever - I felt much more in control doing it online, so I could price-compare between registries and all that fun stuff and tweak things as I went along. Very cute toaster.

I’ve got that toaster! I received it as a birthday present a couple years before getting married, and liked it so much that my DH and I didn’t register for a new toaster even though we upgraded almost all of our other appliances. I have to say that while Hello Kitty’s face does not get imprinted nearly as nicely in practice as the product photo shows, I still adore the toaster and it works pretty well. Also, if my DH feels completely emasculated by owning a pink Hello Kitty toaster, he hasn’t said anything yet!

We didn’t do any in-store registering either! I think reading online reviews is the better route anyway!

That Hello Kitty toaster is adorable. While we went in the stores to look at the items, we actually went home and did our registering online. Much more manageable.

I want toast that has something toasted on it! But let me know if you know of a good way to return stuff on the Amazon registry–it became a big problem for us when we wanted to return some of the gifts bought on amazon.

@Mrs. Pin Cushion: Eeek! I’ll make sure to write something up if we have problems!

@fromcharleston: We live in Japan, Hello Kitty is just a fact of life here!
