My Bustle

August 25th, 2010 @ 6:19 pm by Mrs. Nachos

Hi everyone! I’ve had lots of inquiries about my bustle so I decided to include as much info as I have about it here for you.

Here’s what I know:

My seamstress at David’s Bridal called it a ‘ballroom bustle’ but I now know that’s not the proper term for the style. One site I found refers to mine as the ‘train flip’, found here (it’s the last one on the page), although I did a Google search on ‘train flip bustle’ and nothing came up…I’m guessing that’s just her term. Anywho, whatever you want to call it, I made a Photoshop mock-up of how David’s did it…

My Bustle : wedding chicago wedding dress 16 1

(picture the dress as see-through, and everything shown here is on the underside of the skirt)

The red circles are buttons, and the black curvies on the end of the train are fabric hooks, all sewn to the underside. So basically, the buttons come up right under my butt and the hooks are along the edge of the train, face down, touching the floor.

To bustle (again, this is all on the underside of the skirt so you don’t actually see any of this when the dress is on):

The easiest way is to start on one SIDE of the train, find the first hook, and loop it over the first button, then work your way up and around the skirt until you get to the last hook and button on other side. Basically, my friend ended up under my skirt in a very compromising position at one point, :) It took 11 hooks & buttons to get my skirt up and the bottom to lay flat.

A few things to note:

My dress was asymmetrical. So, if your seamstress tells you it can’t be done because your dress is asymmetrical, either I’m the exception or he/she is wrong. All it takes is a little tweaking of where the buttons should be attached. I’m certainly no seamstress but I honestly can’t think of any kind of train that this wouldn’t work on, unless of course it’s so long that pulling it up to your butt wouldn’t actually get it off the floor. Even then though, I imagine you could attach the hooks higher up the train so it folds over itself.

And here’s every picture I have that shows off the bustle (if even just a little bit):

I really hope this helps! And if anyone knows the proper term for this bustle style, I’d love to know!!

You were totally the inspiration for my bustle! I literally printed out a picture from your original bustle post and brought it to David’s with me for my first alterations appointment. (Does that make me sound like a stalker? Sorry). It was kinda complicated for my bridesmaids to do up after the ceremony, but I got tons of compliments on it. So thank you for the great idea, Nachos!

PS I think the alterations lady called it a French bustle, but I’m pretty sure she was wrong. So I’m really no help in the what-the-heck-to-call-it department.

your bustle is pretty much magic. my bustle was totally screwed up, and i only kept it that way for about 20 minutes. there weren’t enough connectors and nothing lined up. gave the dress weird pulls and poofy butt. i could go on and on about my issues with bustles, but yes, yours is fantastic.

I’m with Mrs. Scissors in some ways — I didn’t have a poofy butt because I had a flowy, light dress, but the bustle didn’t line up all of a sudden, and it didn’t stay anyway (mine had ties that had to match up, instead of a button/hook). Your bustle is so amazing, it looks so seamless!

I have no idea what to call this bustle, but I know my traditional over the skirt bustle got smacked one by a waiter who ripped it out completely. Your’s does indeed look magical!

I love your bustle! The bottom of my dress is very similar to yours and I really wish my seamstress had done this type of bustle. Instead I have one that pins the skirt up in little gatherings. I don’t know how long it will stay in.

I just met with my seamstress yesterday, and this is EXACTLY what we talked about doing to my dress, too! I called it the bubble-bustle!

@kaymaroo: How did you get the alterations lady at David’s to do it?! When I showed them the photo she looked at me and simply said “It can’t be done” and tried to sell me on a one point French or over bustle. I’m going elsewhere where it CAN be done

I highly recommend a rehearsal of the bustling process with the MOH or whoever will be doing it on the wedding day. My husband and I are wedding photographers, http://www. zrweddings.com, and we’ve seen this process take 1/2 hour before with everyone scratching their heads saying “She made it look so easy the shop”. Meanwhile, the guests are waiting inside at the cocktail hour. Some bustles have colored ribbons (only visible from the inside) or tiny numbers. This makes the whole process smoother and the stress level down!

Amazing!! I never realized that was your dress bustled. I thought it was the design! Do you have photos of it unbustled?

I have always wondered how bustles work. It’s just a big mystery to me, just like how planes fly. I guess I won’t really understand until I do it (although I’ve been in an airplane a million times and I’m still terrified…). You’ve demystified it quite a bit for me, thanks!

@SandDollar: The seamstress first told me she didn’t know how to do it, but I insisted (and showed her the ugly DB carpet in the background of Nachos’ picture so she knew they did it at THAT David’s, lol). She stalled for awhile, but finally agreed. I was nervous since she was so hesitant to do it, but it turned out beautifully. Another seamstress later told me they don’t like to do these because it’s more work for the same price. But if you persist, it can be done.
