Mrs. Plaid, Austin Age and Occupation: 26, Pastry Chef Fiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Cabinetry Carpenter Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Kindred Oaks, Georgetown About Me: I am a Jersey girl born and raised but have since migrated to Texas and embraced its twang and Tex-Mex. I could probably eat chips and queso every day but instead I eat popcorn. I use the word “awesome” way too much but I just can’t seem to stop myself. I am addicted to all things DIY and am planning what I call a Texas-Chic wedding. I love snuggling with my two adorable dogs and of course, my adorable fiance. I can’t wait 'til I can call him my husband some day! October 2010, here we come!
About Mrs. Plaid

I’m here to share my envelope calligraphy “shortcut.” And trust me, if you want calligraphy on your invites but can’t afford to pay someone to do it, try this. It’s pretty easy!

Use your handy dandy home printer! I know, you probably think I’m crazy, but get on this safari ride and let me take you on my calligraphy adventure.

Let’s start at the very beginning; it’s a very good place to start… (Anyone else singing The Sound of Music…umm, no, just me?)

1. Pick a font that will look totally kick a$$ on your invitation envelopes. I picked Scriptina.

Isn’t it just gorgeous? OK, did you pick your font? Moving on.

2. Next, go into Microsoft Word, or whatever word processing program you fancy. (I used Word, so my directions will apply more specifically to that program.) Under the tab “Tools” click on “Letter and Mailings” and then “Envelopes and Labels.”

3. A little window will open up. This window will allow you to enter the address, change the font, and move the address to wherever you desire it to be on the envelope. Handy, huh?

4. Hit “Print.” And actually, before you hit “Print,” check the bottom right of the window for a little box called “Feed.” This box will show you how to feed your envelope into your printer.

5. If you’ve got all your addresses in a spreadsheet, you can actually do a mail merge and print all your envelopes at one time. Me, being the smart person I am, decided to make this step more difficult, but I will not burden you with my troubles.

6. Once you’ve got your printed envelopes, you need to choose a pen that you want to use for your calligraphy. Because my envelopes are dark, I decided to go with a metallic silver. If you’ve chosen lighter envelopes, you may want to stick to a classic black.

I picked my pens (yes, that’s right, pens; I bought four different kinds) at Michael’s, one of my homes away from home. I couldn’t decide which would work best.

7. Simply trace the printed font with your calligraphy pen and voila! You’re now a calligraphy master. Congratulations!

How great is that?! They look fabulous.

(The town on your envelope example is the one my fiance grew up in. Funny!)

They came out beautiful! I have a question. Did you have to input the size of the envelope or did you use one of the preset options Word has as far as envelope sizes go? I have tried this before and I can never get the address to print in the middle of the envelope. Can you provide some tips. Thank you

wow good idea!! i wish i had thought of that, but then i’d also need the patience to trace perfectly over every address and i do not have that lol, so props to you for taking on such a task! luckily my friend at work has gorgeous handwriting and she offered to do my addressing, for free! it turned out beautiful.

p.s. i WAS singing the Sound of Music along with you ;) love that movie.

Thank you Miss Plaid! I’ve seen many tutorials on faux-lligraphy(ing) and yours is definitely the most descriptive. Also: I never knew about the “feed” tool! Bookmarking now!

I totally wrote over the printed ink on my wrap-around address labels. It was pain-staking not to mess up but it sure beats hiring a calligrapher when you don’t have the cash. And it came out alright!

This is a really great idea. I had always thought I’d just print invite labels bc I really don’t care enough about calligraphy to pay a shit-ton of money for it or kill myself trying to do it - but this seems like a great shortcut, maybe I’ll consider it!

my microsoft word doesn’t offer Scriptina (or anything else cool like it)
did you have to download this elsewhere first?

This is exactly what I’m planning to do for my invites! I did the same thing for my Save the Dates, but I totally skipped the last step of tracing over the printed words for those. (I got lazy…ha!) I do plan to give it my all for my invites, though.

Now I am singing the Sound of Music to myself, at work, in front of my co-workers.. who are convulsing with laughter :) Anyhow, does this go with different sized envelopes? I’ve found out that some envelopes take a lot of getting used to when it comes to printing :( Thanks for the tutorial!
