The Beginnings of an STD

August 25th, 2010 @ 6:43 pm by Mrs. Hippo

Hahahaha…STD. Save the date, kids…get it?!? I know, the joke’s been told a million times, but I had to have my turn! Moving right along…

I fell in love with this “Pencil It In” save the date as soon as I saw it on Martha Stewart’s website. Oh, Martha…you’re so clever! Martha says, “We chose colorful six-sided pencils and had information printed on every other pane by an online pencil store.” Sounds simple enough. I immediately did some online research on pencils, only to find I could not find any place that would print on every other pane. Seriously. The only option I could find were three consecutive sides. Luckily, I order custom merchandise for my job, so I reached out to my vendor (now friendor) to see what he could come up with.

Now, I had no intention of turning this vendor into a friendor. If I had found pencils that could be printed on every other pane online, I would have ordered them. Really! But come to find out, the friendor couldn’t find them either! He did find out that there’s something about the way the machines that are used for the imprinting are laid out that allows three consecutive sides to be imprinted. In order to use every other side, someone would have to manually move the pencils after every side, and that would add additional labor charges. Alas. But…my friendor felt so bad that I wasn’t able to find what I was looking for, he gifted the pencils to me. GIFTED, yo! I begged him to let me pay SOMETHING for them—even getting them at cost would have been A-OK: I get a discount, he doesn’t lose money—but no go. He insisted, saying he would have it no other way. Sweet.

Here it is! Navy blue pencil with gold imprinting:

Now I’m just figuring out how to package the pencils and send them out. Martha says to place them in a cardboard mailing tube and that “It will cost about 83 cents to send a tube of six pencils,” but she’s already let me down once, so I’m not sure that I trust her anymore. Plus, I want to find a way to make the postage less expensive. TBD!

Did you get any unexpected freebies from friendors?

Those are so cool! I’ve never seen them before. I’ve definitely heard that quote before but I just love it. So creative.

Pfft! My friends are mostly doctors and lawyers and my bestie is a CPA… between all of us, nobody has ONE OUNCE OF CREATIVE JUICE :( I wish I had friendors. Looking good. I love your STDs and can honestly say I haven’t seen something like it before. I heart Martha too but she makes things look so easy until you try them. But then I heard she only sleeps 4hours a night so she probably has oodles of time unlike us working mortals :(

Totally love this idea!!! Can you put the pencil in a notch that you cut into a card? That way it’s all in one piece and fits in a normal envelope, with just one small bump?

Hahaha, I have to admit.. your title made me giggle like a schoolgirl.

The pencil idea is quite cool! It might also be possible to use it as favors :)

I second Lemon’s idea of putting it into a notch - but since I just took my invites to the Post Office yesterday to have them weighed and priced, I want to warn you that because it won’t go through a sorting machine, it may be more expensive. My invites are 83 cents each for that reason.

Love the idea though! Besides, you got them for free so the postage isn’t all that much considering!

This is a great idea! I like the idea of packaging them in a card as well. But it will probably be a bit costly to send them all out.

I love the colors on these pencils!

I have a suggestion! You can get thick (think postcard weight) paper- fold it up like you would a letter and then cut on the lines. You can print a cute graphic on the paper, before cutting of course. Treat this as a postcard- with a place to address and a maybe a picture of yourselves or any design you like. Leave a space for your pencil and grab those old fashioned hot glue guns, squirt a thin line of hot glue along the sheet and attach your pencil. The thin line should be skinny enough that the pencil will pull off the page without having glue left on the pencil. The same effect as when there are advertisements in magazines that peel off with that sticky line of gooey glue. Good luck! I think your idea is adorable!

The lowest I can figure is about 81 cents. I did some figuring and that’s the USPS First-Class Mail Letter (go to http://postcalc.usps.gov/Default.aspx, select letter, select envelope containing a rigid object) I think the price might vary depending on how far each envelope is traveling, but that might only be true for packages. Good luck!

Be careful… I once sent my little cousins in CA pencils that I got for them as souviners, and my aunt called to say that the envelope got all torn up, and there were no more pencils. I actually would trust Martha on the packaging part…

My only potential friendor was my best friend chef, but I told her right away when I began planning that I didn’t want her anywhere near the catering or bartending or cake-baking. I wanted her to enjoy the day with me. And she did! Your pencils are very cute, good luck finding a cheap way to ship them.

Ack- I wanted to do this too, but checked with my post office and they said I needed a padded envelope (so there would be no bump, otherwise it messes up their sorting machine). I ended up making library due date cards, which were very cute too, but I wished I could have incorporated pencils.

So cute!! I love that idea! Even if you end up having to pay more to ship them, the cuteness is so worth it… and you did end up saving on the pencils themselves! ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions!

@Coffeecake: Thanks for the postage help! I think you’re right on the price, but I still can’t figure out how a tube of multiple pencils would be so cheap.

@MissSnowBunny: Padded envelopes… hmmmm… I’m definitely going to have to research this a bit more.

Cute idea, and a great friendor! My STDs were 81 cents to mail and it was just a card with a magnet in it. Of course I had to DIY my cards in the square shape which is what cost more. Oh well I loved them.

Tie them with ribbon and maybe a little cardstock tag and stick them in small padded envelopes?
