The White Dresses, Part 1

August 25th, 2010 @ 9:31 am by Mrs. Barrettes

If you’ve seen Inception, you know that an once an idea is implanted in your brain it grows like a seed, and sometimes it’s hard to tell where it came from. So—I don’t know where, when, or how my idea was planted, but somehow I’ve always just known I would wear my mother’s dress.

I never dreamed of big, fancy white dresses or princess gowns, and since I’ve worn so many costumes throughout my performing years, I didn’t want to feel like I was wearing a costume and performing as a bride. Mom Barrettes’ dress is pretty and simple and perfect, but it needs a “punch” to update it a tad. While I want to wear her dress, I’m not thrilled with the idea of going back to the 1980s!

Soooo…we’re taking this:

(Please forgive the blank stare, I must have been hungry!)

…and turning the top into this:

What do you think? Totally do-able, right? The seamstress seems to think it will be an easy enough alteration, and I’m sure we can do something fun with the sleeves. My least favorite body parts are my trapezius muscles (connecting neck and back), and the high-neck/cap-sleeve/sweetheart-neckline combo looks very flattering on me. But here’s the catch: I won’t be trying on the altered dress until five weeks before the wedding. I’m crossing my fingers everything goes as planned. If not, you will witness a Barrettes Breakdown.

The thing is, Mom Barrettes’ dress isn’t made to cut loose on the dance floor. There is going to be a lot of booty shaking going on. Haaaaay! Hence, the need for my own sassy white cocktail dress. I went on an internet hunt for white dresses, and my search came to an abrupt halt when I stumbled upon this beauty:

*gasp* Hi, have you met me? I love satin bows! I can’t get enough of this dress and can stare at it for hours without blinking. I mean, it’s perfect. It’s Marchesa. And it’s out of my price range. MOH tried to get some of his stylist friends to locate it and perhaps pull it for one night, but Mom Barrettes quickly reminded me that I do not want to be responsible for a dress that is not in the budget.

A re-creation of this dress can be done by a popular LA dressmaker, but it’s going to cost me $1000+ . And while I’m in love with it, I know we can find a super cute white cocktail dress in NYC or LA for under $500. That money is better put to use elsewhere. Lil’ white dress hunt continues…

Did you ever think about wearing your mother’s dress? Are you wearing two dresses? Did you have to sacrifice your dream dress for the sake of your wedding budget?

LOVE that you’re wearing your mom’s dress, that’s so sweet and special!! And bummer about the Marchesa dress bc it is to die for but luckily there are tons of cute, white reception dresses out there…Have you tried Amsale??

I love the idea of wearing your mothers dress! My mom wore a kimono and I’m not about to get that intense with our Asian-influenced, English-elemented backyard wedding. That neckline is so pretty and unique, fingers crossed that everything works out! I’m on a little white dress search too!

I love it! And yes…I wore my mom’s dress! She got married in 1976, so she had a pesant like dress with see through bell sleeves, but I made it my own! Spaghetti strap and more fitted…and it was very me. Love that you’re wearing your mom’s!

That’s awesome that you are wearing your mom’s dress. That Marchesa dress is something divine though… Perhaps someone else can make less expensively than the $1000 quote?

My mum married in the 70’s… enough ruffles and laces for three dresses! And anyhow, by the time we moved to the States, the dress couldn’t cross the Atlantic. I think it’s sitting somewhere in my grandfather’s house in Nigeria. Anyhow, I am doing a dress change but into a huge contraption for the Nigerian portion of the ceremony… le sigh! BTW, your cocktail dress is tres cute!

My friend found some Marchesa dresses for $100 at the Saks outlet (Off-Fifth, I think its called). See if you can find a friend in the states to go to Nordstrom Rack or OFf Fifth and see if they can find it.

Just wondering how much you are spending to have your mother’s dress altered? I am thinking of having my grandmothers dress altered but I am not sure how much something like that really costs.

I love the new neckline, that is going to be such a showstopper. And good luck on your short dress hunt! I found mine in the bridesmaids section. Who knows where yours will surprise you from!

Holy crap, you look a lot like your momma! I thought that first pic was you!

I love the top of that dress that you’re using for inspiration - I think it’ll look great.

My mom actually sold her dress to a seamstress a while back, but it was heavy in lace (and not my thing). Although, it would have been a nice touch to use some of the lace to wrap my bouquet.

Love that Marchesa dress - so fun!

A) Your mother’s dress transformed into that other dress - AMAZING! Cannot wait to see it!
B) My dream dress WAY out of my dress budget, WAY WAY out… but I ended up loving the dress I ended up with way more :)

Both of those dresses are absolutely beautiful! You have good taste, girl! I was thinking that if you have an eye for luxury but not the budget, you could always try Rent the Runway (www.renttherunway.com). They have amazing cocktail dresses! For example: http://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/lelarose_dresses/brocademoonstonedress

Do you have a rehearsal dinner dress yet?
