About Mrs. Lace

Whilst planning our honeymoon to Disney World, I discovered that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter would have its grand opening two weeks before we were there. And have I ever mentioned to you that I love the Harry Potter series? If not, let it be known, I LOVE the Harry Potter series. For my sake, Mr. Lace has watched all the movies with me. However, as time passed, he started asking questions.

“Why does Snape hate Harry so much?”

“Does Hermione like Ron?”

“Why didn’t Harry die?”

He was looking for a short answer, but for any of you Harry Potter fans, you know, there are no short or easy explanations in Harry Potter. I wouldn’t say he loves Harry Potter, but I think he’ll admit that it’s a well-crafted story and is impressed with my in-depth knowledge on the topic (or so I’d like to think).

Anyway, when I mentioned going to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, Mr. Lace was all for it. However, we didn’t make any firm plans.

After our third day at Walt Disney World we realized that if we didn’t do a little research and planning, we might not get around to going so Mr. Lace stayed up late looking up tickets and transportation. I know that he wasn’t necessarily excited about leaving Walt Disney World to go to Harry Potter Land, but he knew I’d be majorly bummed if we didn’t make the trip. So, on the fifth day of our honeymoon, we hopped in a taxi outside the Grand Floridian and headed to Universal Studios.

Mr. Lace forking over $200 for our tickets.

So, how do I describe the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? It’s about the size of Toon Town at Disneyland, if you’re familiar with that, so I was a bit disappointed with the size. I kind of feel like they could make an entire theme park just centered around Harry Potter—a Hogsmeade, a Diagon Alley, the Weasley home, Hogwart’s Castle, Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, the Dursley’s home. This was a mish mash of Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley and Hogwarts. When you enter, you see the Hogwart’s train.

Don’t let the snow deceive you. It was 100 degrees and 100% humidity (or so it felt). See this guy wiping the sweat from his brow?

The first item on the agenda was to get something to drink. Libations anyone? Your choices were frozen butterbeer, cold butterbeer or pumpkin juice.

Sweat-drenched Mrs. Lace drinking cold butterbeer.

Okay, so these drinks were like $5 each which is obviously pricey, but to be expected. I was so STINKIN’ excited about buying the butterbeer, though. Mr. Lace ordered us each a butterbeer. While I was drinking it, Mr. Lace said, “How is it?” I replied, “MMMM it’s sooooo good.” Mr. Lace took a sip of his butterbeer and said, “We just paid $10 for cream soda.” Okay, so yes, it was pretty much really cold cream soda, but it was so good.

Our next visit was to Hogwart’s, which happened to be the entrance to a ride.

The hall of talking photos—and yes, they spoke! There were larger paintings of the four founders and they talked to each other about He-who-must-not-be-named and Harry Potter.

Honeyduke’s—and YES, there was a line to get into this store.

I didn’t catch photos of Ollivander’s (where you could choose your own wand), the Owl Post (where you could send a postcard stamped at Hogsmeade), Dervish and Banges and Zonko’s. There were hour long waits to get into the STORES.

Soon after this, as we were leaving Universal Studios, it began to POUR. People were walking around drenched and shoeless because everyone was ankle deep in water. What was supposed to be a twenty minute taxi ride back to Walt Disney World turned into an hour-and-a-half long ride. We were soaked and tired.

At dinner, Mr. Lace asked, “so, what did you think?” Even after the ridiculous ride back to Walt Disney World, the crazy crowds at Harry Potter Land, and the mother of all rain storms, it was totally worth it.

Thanks for the recap. I am DYING to see this place. I’m glad to know that I shouldn’t expect it to be huge, or free of a ton of other people. I’ll keep that in mind when I shell out the $200 for tickets. Yikes!

So jealous! I went to Disney and Universal last year and saw the building in progress. I was so sad it wasn’t open yet. I can’t wait to go…hopefully after all the excitement dies down though. One hour wait to go into a store is insane!

That looks like so much fun. My husband kept teasing me that I really wanted to go there on our honeymoon or we should’ve detoured there on the way home. The fact that it’s small makes me feel a little better about not having a chance to go. (My husband has also watched the movies while I’m a book devotee. But he doesn’t ask questions because he knows I’ll just go off on a billion tangents trying to explain.)

The first time he saw me was at a Harry Potter themed birthday party, the day that Book 6 came out though we didn’t meet for another month.

AHHHH I can’t wait to go here! I was at Universal two years ago, and I caught a glimpse of hogsmeade and the beginnings of the castle and I’ve been dying ever since to go! Of course in the meantime I moved to California got a job and engaged, so there goes all my vacation time :P Maybe when we go the hysteria will finally have died down. So ridiculous that there were waits for the stores!

Oh man, I am soo jealous your husband was cool with going there on your honeymoon. I suggested going there to FI and he said he didn’t want me to be more in love with Harry Potter than him on our honeymoon, lol. I suppose he has a point, but I will go there someday!! And I completely agree, they should have just done a whole theme park based on HP, not just one little section.

OMG my BF and I went to the WWoHP this summer! I am OBSESSED with Harry Potter (and have dragged him into my obsession, hehe) and it was so cool to visit the park and feel like you were in the movie/book! I was disappointed with the size also though, and the massive amounts of people. 30 minute lines to go INTO a store? Really? But I still had a great time and it looks like you both did too!

So freakin cool!!! I am obsessed with HP and can’t wait to go check out the park. My fiance will watch the movies with me but he comes out confused, asks one question and then leaves it alone after I go off on a passionate tangent for 15 minutes.

Aaaaaah! So awesome! I made Mr. SD swear he would take me soon. I was a total midnight-releaser, the only reason I remember the date of my first kiss is because it was the night HP OOTP was released :) I am a shameless HP fan!

Eeek! I am so excited. It looks amazing. Yes I agree they could have made a whole theme park (and millions of Harry Potter fans very very happy!) , but either way I am very excited! We are going in October for a vacation :)
Looks like you guys had a ton of fun!!

Awesome recap! Are tickets really $100 though? That’s crazy. We will go when the hype wears down, maybe in a couple of years. I heard the Butter Beer was good but it’s too bad it just tastes like cream soda :( Everybody says Mr. G looks like a grown up Harry with his disheveled brown hair and glasses, plus the accent being from England and all!
