We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Last Month Left

August 26th, 2010 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Sand Dollar

Well, it’s about that time. After seven long months of planning, I’ve finally hit that 30-day mark. And guys, I can’t wait! I’m so excited I can barely contain myself. This weekend my girls are all coming down to my house for a wedding craftapalooza. We’ll assemble programs, utensil sets, pole buckets, and drill holes in exactly one million cans so we can paint them and be done with the centerpieces. It’s gonna be intense, y’all! These next few weeks will be stuffed full of preparation and progress. I’m going to jump on the dreamer’s bandwagon and draw up a little wish list of what I’d love to have, but can never happen.

How I would adore a jukebox wedding. Papa SD is a huge fan, and has one in his office he plays every night. He even found another one for Mr. SD and me to enjoy, though it will play records, and it’s not fully functional yet. But how awesome would it be to hook this sucker up to the park sound system, load it full of records, and have our guests set the playlist? Um, yes please! But it’s just not in the cards for us, no matter how much I wish it were so.

A sparkler send off. Unfortunately we just don’t have the budget for this. We’re thinking more along the lines of birdseed, though one friend even suggested oats. Oats, huh? I had to stop and ponder that for a minute. Since rice is a huge no-no nowadays, oats seems to evoke the same sentiment of fertility and plenty. Is anybody aware of negative environmental impacts of oats?

Favors. I’m the shizz at microwave bread and butter pickles; I’ll toot that horn. In a dream world, I’d make a jar for every guest. But again, the budget says, “No dice!”

There are dozens of other things I could rattle off that I’d love to have at our wedding. Signature drinks, real china, mason jar glasses (can you tell I’m obsessed with mason jars?). But not only have I learned to live without, I’ve thought up unique, crafty alternatives to the things I couldn’t have. And you know what? Our wedding will be perfect.

What have you had to give up because of your budget? Did you come up with a great alternative?

Love the jukebox idea! That’s awesome! As for what we gave up, well, originally I wanted a different photographer. However, the one we got for an amazing price was fantastic and her husband (whom I’ve known for years) served as a second photographer. All in all, the other things I don’t really remember because it was fun (except the 45 minute late officiant).

Your wedding will be lovely no matter what. I have a lot of things I want but can’t have as well but it’s best not to dwell, eh? Have a stress-free 30 days!

And um, microwave bread and butter pickles? Whhhaaaaaaa? I am Googling now.

@AnamCara: Here’s the recipe for the pickles. And be advised: they’re bread and butter pickles which means they’re sweet and tasty and can be eaten by the jarful!

• 1 lg. cucumber (sliced)
• 1 med. onion (sliced)
• 1 C sugar
• 1/2 C white vinegar
• 1 t salt
• 1 t mustard seed
• 1/4 t celery seed
• 1/4 t tumeric

Mix all ingredients together in a microwave bowl. Microwave on high for 7-8 min, stirring twice. Take out and pour in a glass jar. Refrigerate and serve!!

Super easy, delicious, and makes great gifts!

I’m having a jukebox wedding! I’ve never heard of anyone else who has done this though, so I’m so excited to hear I’m not the only one who thinks having a jukebox instead of a set playlist is a great idea!

I love all of your ideas. I have lots of my own but I’m still trying to see if we can afford them too. I can’t wait to see the final touches on your wedding. I think it will be beautiful and amazing. :)

A jukebox wedding sounds like so much fun! Sorry it didn’t work out, but maybe if your dad gets it working in time you could have a jukebox housewarming party. :)

Miss Sand Dollar– beware of oats, actually. It’s dangerous for animals to eat them dry, I know for horses you’re not supposed to feed them unless you mix in water first.

Birdseed is your best bet, and it’s still seeds, so still in line with the whole fertility thing! You could even just throw one type or other of seed if you wanted (black sunflower seeds, or thistle, etc.).

@Ms Sand Dollar - thanks for the recipe! I’m so excited to try them - I’ve been looking for a pickle recipe that doesn’t require sterilizing jars and making 10 lbs of pickles! Thanks!!!
