About Mrs. Zebra

HIYOOOOO!

August 26th, 2010 @ 9:39 am by Mrs. Zebra

When I was a little girl, I had a very specific idea of what I wanted my wedding to be like. I’m going to leave you in suspense for a bit because it is priceless. As I got older, I never thought I could afford a nice wedding. I’m a little unsure of myself whenever money and/or numbers are involved. Because of my fear, I didn’t have big adult ideas (aside from the dress) that I thought about about, except for the MUSIC. Oh man, I love music. Our DJ was our first wedding decision. In truth, hiring Brendan Lafferty of southcoastdj.com was not a decision. He was the DJ at our friend’s wedding and kept everyone on the dance floor all. night. long. He’s magic! Even Brendan admits that Trevor and Jen’s wedding was the best. Jen’s sister even hired him a year later to do her wedding. (Brendan is not paying me for my oh-so-important recommendation.)

So my thoughts about music? Well, I certainly have wanted to hear “Stand By Me” at our wedding for years. YEARS I tell ya! Don’t get me started on “The Cha Cha Slide.” I don’t want to get fired up this early in the morning. Needless to say, there will be no White People dances at the wedding. Sorry folks, you’re going to have to come up with your own dance moves without some idiot telling you what to do. The bar is to the right of the entrance, in case you are wondering!

So with the most important decision made, the music maker, where do I go from here? I started the venue hunt shortly after hiring the DJ and started to get all warm and fuzzy about a peacock theme. It was January 2009, so this theme was pretty cutting edge at the time. Are you all sick of those damn feathers by now? No? Well I am (for me anyway)! So without further ado, here is the inspiration board—the first of many…

HIYOOOOO! : wedding color schemes dj providence Inspira

(L-R Shoe, Cake, Biltmore, Gwen,

Twilight, Crashers,

S&TC, Groom, Bouquet)

Did you have a wedding theme in mind, only to change it down the road?

Seriously the only music rule I had to begin with was no cha-cha slide. But then I gave each parent a request (we made our own playlist) and FMIL insisted on cha-cha slide! I begged her to change it, but she said that was probably to only song she would dance too– oy!

I changed my wedding theme like I changed my college major. One day I wanted to be a journalist, the next a drama kid, the next a politician, and on and on. I went through a MILLION types weddings before landing on one in my own backyard!

Can’t wait to hear about your cake!

Are those peacock feathers I spy?! YAY! We’ve based our whole color scheme/theme around peacock feathers, so I can’t wait to see how you incorporate them! [crossing fingers that you kept with this!]

It sounds like you didn’t stick with the peacock theme because you got tired of it. Just remember, you may have seen this theme a thousand times in wedding blogs, but for your guests it’s probably brand spanking new and amazing! Only switch it if it is because what YOU want to do, not because you feel the theme is played out.

PS. I love that cake!

@Miss Thimble: Twilight most definitely makes the cut. At least it does at the Engagement shoot. Be excited! :)@Miss Glasses: I change my theme like my undies, once a month. Haha
@Yvonne110511: You’ve got your priorities straight! I would have done the same. Fortunately you don’t run into that problem when booking over two years in advance.
@emma5w: Oh yes, there are Peacock feathers in the wedding. Just not a central theme to them. They are so expensive! I love how bright the colors are.
@MissDonnaAnne: Gwen is amazing all around and her dress makes me drool.
@dance: You’ll be cha cha sliding all over that dance floor!
@ms_music: I committed way too early on the theme without thinking it through. I wanted everything to be cohesive and the Peacock feathers were getting too expensive to purchase for all that I wanted. They will be making appearances. Luckily they tie into the Victorian theme quite nicely.

Mmmmmm, the Gwen dress.
I TOTALLY changed my wedding theme — I originally wanted a beach theme with a white lace dress. When I ended up picking a caffe-colored taffeta ballgown, my beach theme went out the window. Whoops!

I too originally thought the peacock theme was the way to go, until I realized it’s everywhere right now and then I wanted something else… still not exactly sure what that is!

@lindsd16: It will come. I had my “a-ha” moment a few weeks ago.

Haha, well sadly, as much as you might hate those “white people dances,” inevitably a guest is going to request them. I put all of those songs on my “do not play list,” but my DJ was nice enough to come over to me to inform me when guests (multiple) did make requests for them. Because our dance floor was hopping, I allowed him to go ahead with a couple, because it made them happy.
