Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!

Here We Are Now, Entertain Us!

Unfortunately, we will not be having dancing at our wedding.

While many backyard weddings do rent out a dance floor and have a DJ setup, we can’t really afford that.

My parents have weighed in on the importance of having some form of entertainment after we cut the cake. My mom wants some old lady she knows to come sing. That’s incredibly random and a little scary.

What does my dad want? OK, picture this. An intimate backyard wedding in an L.A. suburb, with a Japanese theme. Cherry blossoms, paper lanterns, paper cranes, the works. And an English Sunday roast for dinner. Candles everywhere and the new night sky casting a glow as friends and family who haven’t seen each other in years talk about old memories and catch up. And then…

Don’t get me wrong—I love mariachi. On our second anniversary, we had a mariachi serenade us with some Selena while we were eating bomb carne asada and sipping tequila. But maybe, this time, not for our wedding.

So, no dancing, no weird singing lady, and no mariachi. What’s left?

People can eat our yummy homemade desserts, fill up their cups, listen to some music from our iPod selection, and hang out. The guests can start to leave whenever they’d like. I’ve mentioned my love of Beer Pong and King’s Cup; those kind of games could happen here. Because we are having a backyard wedding, we have to think about the neighbors. We don’t want to turn our backyard into a rowdy, “Livin’ On A Prayer” blastin’ noise complaint. And with only 50 guests, half of whom are family people and would like to get home to their kids, we don’t expect anyone to wanna hang out all night in our backyard. Considering I haven’t been home in two years and most of my friends and family friends have met Mr. Glasses only a handful of times, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to replace dancing with good old fashioned conversation.

Since we won’t be having dancing, we’d better make sure to have an awesome playlist so that our guests don’t get bored. We are going to play upbeat, fun songs that aren’t too explicit. Essential to our list are:

  • Jack Johnson
  • The Beatles
  • Frank Sinatra
  • Outkast
  • The Black Eyed Peas
  • ABBA
  • The Beach Boys
  • Oasis
  • Beyonce
  • Michael Jackson
  • The Pet Shop Boys
  • Elton John
  • Queen
  • Elvis Presley

Check out Hi-Fi Weddings’s list of popular wedding tunes. This list really helped me out!

Mr. Glasses and I have very different tastes in music, but we’ve agreed that we’ll leave the altar with The Darkness’s “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” and be introduced with Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” (which is our song, btw!).

We are also foregoing the garter toss because believe it or not, none of our male guests are single. I think it would be kind of fun to do the bouquet toss because a lot of my girlfriends are single, but I’ll have to see if the single ladies are interested.

Are you forgoing any wedding traditions? What’s on your must-play list?

Do yard games! Croquet, bocce, cornholing… so much fun and laid back!

You should do what i did so you can still have your boquet toss!! I had a silk flower bouquet and attached scratch tickets to it…i said “Any woman who “wants to get lucky” tonight needs to come up!” I did the same for the garter toss. That way you are not excluding singles and everyone gets to come up and have some fun!!! Everyone LOVED it!

I just have to say- at my wedding we didn’t have dancing either, and it was great! We also did an iPod wedding and drinks and people loved it. It just goes to show you that everyone wants something a little different.

Also, we forgot to do the garter toss and the best man caught the bouquet. Whoopsie.

Thanks so much for this post! Our wedding is in a week and I’m STILL working on the playlist. We don’t have dancing either but I figure if our families and friends can get together and have a good time normally there’s no reason they can’t do it for our wedding.

Good food, Good friends and Great music— shake and pour! Sounds fun to me…although the scratch off tickets is a very good idea (@baileyh )

*bean bag toss is always fun- paint one box for the bride and one for the groom.

I’m dumping the white dress tradition for the bride…all my bridesmaids are wearing white! I’ve got a green wedding dress.

We got married at a park and didn’t have dancing either and people still had a great time! Just be careful your ipod doesn’t get stuck on the wrong playlist! I didn’t even notice until one of DH’s heavy metal songs came on. Whoops! We quickly resolved it but still. I had no idea how long it had been on that playlist!

I just have to say, my group of friends love beer pong and flip cup! We play it every time we get together.

I love the idea of backyard games set up. We really wanted to have a fire pit also, but the golf course we are getting married at didn’t like the idea of burning a hole in their greens - go figure!
I think the ipod idea sounds great though - it will be a great time!

I think no dancing will be just fine! Especially with a smaller wedding-it will lend itself more towards socializing (and games of beer pong!) And sorry papa glasses, I think a mariachi band is a no-go!

I’ve kind of been fussing to myself about this… there will be no dancing at our wedding, but what else to do? There are people to entertain! My idea of lawn games got shot down as lame by both fiance and FMIL. I’m still not sure what to do, but this post helps me take a step back and think, you know, it’ll be just fine. People can learn to socialize… and as long as there’s food, people will probably be happy.

I actually hadnt thought about the fact that my guestlist contains a very limited amount of ’single gals’ for a bouqet toss till you mentioned it! I’m among the last of my friends to get married and have very few younger cousins. I would hate to see my 1 single friend, 1 newly divorced friend and 2 or so of my 20 something cousins head out on the dance floor and have their ’single’ status put on display! I just might have to scratch that tradition or come up with something more original to do - such as the scratch off!

@Miss Glasses: Haha, a troll is a funny thing to call someone…. I am superjealous of your fun and playful reception. I feel like mine was so cookie cutter w/ the whole dj shebang. Sounds awesome to me!
