Mrs. Plaid's Picture
Mrs. Plaid, Austin Age and Occupation: 26, Pastry Chef Fiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Cabinetry Carpenter Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Kindred Oaks, Georgetown About Me: I am a Jersey girl born and raised but have since migrated to Texas and embraced its twang and Tex-Mex. I could probably eat chips and queso every day but instead I eat popcorn. I use the word “awesome” way too much but I just can’t seem to stop myself. I am addicted to all things DIY and am planning what I call a Texas-Chic wedding. I love snuggling with my two adorable dogs and of course, my adorable fiance. I can’t wait 'til I can call him my husband some day! October 2010, here we come!
About Mrs. Plaid

So y’all know that I’m that crazy bride that has decided to make her own cake. But to defend myself, I do have a bit of experience in the cake-baking-and-decorating department. ;)

You’d think being a cake decorator would make choosing a cake design for my own wedding cake easy peasy…but it has not been. I’ve turned back into indecisive bride. Yay.

These are some of the cakes that I’ve been crushing on throughout my design process (or at least, you know, recently):

I got the idea to incorporate the lace pattern of my dress in some way, and now I cannot get it out of my head. And then I found this cake on Martha Stewart’s website yesterday:

That got me thinking. I can use the same technique, but in blue and in the shape of the lace design from my dress!

I knew I wanted to incorporate simple yellow flowers in between each tier of the cake. I actually made these a few months ago out of gum paste and attached them to cross-stitch rings. I made around 200 flowers total.

Y’all have seen my awesome blue cake plate already, but here’s one more picture because I love it so much.

And without further ado, my cake design as best as it can be drawn using Paint. net. Trust me, the actual cake will look much better.

I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I’m going to do a trial run soon to make sure all the techniques are successful, and I’ll be sure to show y’all pictures.

How’d you come up with your wedding-cake design? Were you just as indecisive as I was?

The blogger Orangette did this and I thought it was such a great idea. Her cake was not as complicated as yours though and I don’t have your skills so I’m going to hire someone.

I love sweets so a cake covered in candy sounded great to me! So I am opting for a cake covered in rock candy!

I asked our cake baker to mimic the lace detail from my dress on our cake! I ended up changing my mind though, in large part because I realized that I loved the scrollwork my baker does on a lot of her cakes and I would be a lot more certain about what I was getting. That, and I didn’t have a clear photo of my lace and wanted to make a decision on the cake design way before my dress was due to arrive. I can’t wait to see how yours turns out.

Pretty! And that first cake picture was the inspiration photo for our cake :) Sylvia changed up the ribbon color to navy to match my bridesmaids’ dresses, but the rest is similar :)

I am glad to see I am not the only bride crazy enough to do her own cake. I decided from the very start that I would do my cake and I have changed the design about 3-4, maybe 5 times. At the moment I have my final design. It will mimc my card box. A 3 tier round cake, black and white, w/ damask print and maybe red roses or a nice red bow.

What technique are you using for the lace design…royal icing? The sketch looks beautiful, I know the cake will be fabulous.

very envious that you are so talented that you can make your own cake - especially all the detailed lace that you’re going to add! i haven’t made a decision yet for my cake other than that like you i think i want to incorporate the lace pattern onto the cake somehow!

Love the final design! I saw that cake in MSW (the pink/red one) too and fell in love. I had to break up with it, but still :)
