What’s Your Poison?

August 27th, 2010 @ 4:47 pm by Mrs. Octopus

GOOD NEWS, everyone! (Said in the voice of Professor Farnsworth from Futurama.) Our plan for providing our own alcohol at the reception has evolved quite a bit since way back when I first posted about it, and I’m excited to say that we’re getting close to having our DIY booze options all figured out!

Beer

We’re definitely going to serve Yuengling, Sam Adams Octoberfest, and Harpoon Brewery’s hard apple cider. Harpoon is local to Boston, and Mr. Octo and I went on a tour last month. We both sampled the hard cider for the first time, and had a “HELLO LOVAH, where have you been all my life?!” moment. It’s not really sugary and sweet like some hard ciders are—we both agreed it was almost like a dry champagne. Deeeelicious.

There is one sticking point on the beer selections. A certain maid of honor who shall not be named is giving me a great deal of heat for not having a “light, drinkable” (or, in my opinion, gross and watery) beer like Bud Light or Coors on the list. I mean, I guess it’s just a beer-snob position on my part; I think those “light” beers are gross, I never drink them, and I don’t really want to serve them. That certain maid of honor thinks my preference doesn’t matter; people want that kind of beer, and I should have it anyway. I think that if we’re going to serve a light beer, Corona would be a good compromise. Mr. Octo thinks Corona will be too expensive, and votes for PBR, because he’s turned into a hipster, apparently. What do you all think?

Wine

We’re keeping this one simple and not-too-specific. Whatever Finger Lakes white wine strikes our fancy, and whatever tasty merlot we can find for around $10 a bottle. Donezo.

Cocktails

So here’s where things get interesting. While the Children’s Museum does not provide our alcohol, it does charge us a $5 per person “bar fee.” For that fee, we get ice, bar fruit (like cherries and lemon wedges), juices, and sodas. Our goal has been to come up with a few mixed drinks that can largely be created using the juices and sodas provided with the bar fee, eliminating the need to spend lots of money on extra mixers. Here’s what the Children’s Museum will be providing to us: Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist, ginger ale, orange juice, cranberry juice, grapefruit juice, tomato juice, tonic, and seltzer water.

From that, we’ve decided to serve gin & tonics, some variation on a cranberry & vodka, and my grandfather’s whiskey sour recipe. The gin & tonic is easy peasy, but my grandfather’s whiskey sours will not be—we’ll have to stock all our own mixers for that one. I’m hoping to strike a happy medium on the cranberry & vodka drink. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love just a plain ol’ cranberry & vodka any day, but I’m hoping to maybe…jazz it up a little? Something that says more “fancy and festive event” and less “my go-to choice on dollar well drinks night”? I would LOVE to hear recipes for cranberry-and-vodka-based cocktails. Or, alternately, orange-juice-and-vodka-based cocktails.

I’d love your feedback, hive, especially on the crapp—ahem, drinkable beers issue, and I’d quadruple-love vodka cocktail suggestions. What do you think? What are you serving as your alcohol options?

A wedding I went to recently had similar mixer options, and I did vodka, cranberry, and grenadine all night. You could also spritz it up with some Sierra Mist to give it fizz.

NO to crappy beer. Yuengling is totally drinkable, as smooth as boring old Miller Lite with MUCH more flavor. Plus, you’re in PA. Everyone will drink Yuengling.

As far as CJ drinks:

Bay Breeze (vodka, cranberry, pineapple juice)
Sea Breeze (vodka, cranberry, grapefruit juice)
Madras (vodka, cranberry, OJ)
Cosmo (vodka, cranberry, triple sec, lime juice)

And this one doesn’t have a name, but one time I tried mixing Absolut Citron with cranberry juice and topping it with champagne. YUM. Feel free to name it after me if you use it. ;)

it sounds like you and your fi would fit in very well with our group of friends! i loooove me a little harpoon cider btw. anyhoo, my fi is a total beer snob and apparently is also a hipster b/c when he cant afford a microbrew, he always goes for the pbr.

however, people who are bud light drinkers (no offense meant whatsoever, i dont drink beer so i have no preference) arent usually fans of the pbr. but i think you are being more than accomodating by providing excellent (FREE) alcohol to your wedding guests, so go for whatever you want.

sidenote: fi wants me to commend you for having Yuengling, since he loves that shiznit and we cant get it in maine.

my (probably biased) take on the “ahem, drinkable” beers is that most people who drink them do so for two reasons: 1) they are afraid drinking good beer will make them fat (hence, low-calorie), or 2) they don’t actually like beer, but do like drinking alcohol (hence: flavorless).

in my opinion, you can get around both of those problems by serving a few good, simple mixed drinks, which you are. i wouldn’t worry about it.

@peaches1038: So funny, my fiance is insisting that we have PBR in addition to our “beer snob” beers.

How about Shiner? It’s not a “light” beer, but as someone who doesn’t drink a lot of beer it’s good. I also like me some Blue Moon!

Do not accommodate the people with bad taste in beer!

UNLESS there is beer pong. Then light beer is forgivable.

Seriously, though, I think what you’re doing is perfectly reasonable. Yeungling is pretty simple and easy-drinking. We have a guest who is a HUGE Bud Light person (don’t even know, man) and we told him he could bring his own. It’s not like you’re serving nothing but super hoppy IPA’s or super dark stouts just to make a point. Personally, while I don’t want to ignore others’ tastes entirely, I also don’t want to serve something I think is gross at my wedding.

Eugh, forget the crappy beer. People like that can just shoot Jager or whatever it is they do.

We DIYed our booze as well, since we wanted our venue’s wine but our friend’s home-brewed beer, and apparently the laws in Washington state are such that if you provide any booze at all, your caterer can’t provide any. And then we discovered that we could save a ton of money by DIYing the mixers too (our caterer’s suggestion actually) so we did that, and bought a bunch of fairly cheap bubbly for the toasts. Our big splurge (other than our freaking amazing multi-award-winning wines) was a $90 bottle of scotch, which the guys looooooved and was gone in a disturbingly short amount of time.

The mixers we chose were pretty basic, though we did make sure it was possible to make a mojito and most other popular options for our summer wedding. We didn’t worry about any fancy cocktails, in large part because our beer and wine were so good, but it could be fun if that’s something that interests you.

I love a madras, which I make with

1 shot vodka, fill 2/3 with cranberry and 1/3 with OJ and add a twist of lime

it’s tangy, tasty and less bitter than a straight cranberry-vodka

If you get some vermouth you could also be swanky and do martinis which are 2 1/2 oz gin or vodka and 1/4 oz vermouth. If you don’t have olives in your bar fruit, they can be served with lemon in stead.

Yeah, I think your MOH can be given a Yuengling. NO to crappy beer - it’s your wedding! I think @lady brett: is right in that mixed drinks will suppress concerns.

Our beer selection included Yuengling, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Flying Dog’s Wheat Beer (which… is called In Heat Wheat). Our British groomsmen kept referring to Yuengling as “Shinwang” “Shingling” Yinglau” because they couldn’t recall the name and it isn’t sold in the UK. hahaha

how about for wine you go the Trader Joe’s route? $3 buck chuck is good!
And if you’re not a fan of their $3 wine - they do have $5-$6 and even $10 exclusive TJ wines that are really, really good. Trader Joe’s Reserve is their best TJ line and it’s $10.

And what about a cranberry rum punch?
Rum, Cranberry Juice and Gingerale with a little lemon. Delish!

I think the beers you have selected are already drinkable enough. I wouldn’t add a cheaper beer. As for the cocktails, I’d keep it simple. One or two signatures if you like, but other than that, people will be happy to order standard drinks.

I love your beer selections! But I would have to agree with your MOH on stocking a light beer. As the night goes on, it’s nice to be able to switch to a light beer - much more thirst quenching when dancing! And there are always more people than you would think who just want a Bud Light. But it’s your wedding so do what you want!! Maybe they can BYO Crap Beer?!?

Have you though about supplying a rum to go with the Pepsi? There might be anarchy if I don’t have Captain Morgan at my wedding. There’s gotta be at least 10 people who drink it exclusively (fiancé included!) Or, if you opt for a light rum like Bacardi you can make fun cocktails with the juices too!

We got two types of beer for our wedding, both local. We got a dark ESB (my fav!) in a half-keg size and a Pale (a crowd-pleaser but for light beer not the worst) in a full keg. We had about 120 people and we didn’t empty either, but the ESB had more gone than the pale! If you are having cocktails and wine, I wouldn’t worry about it.

I’m a bit of a beer snob also, but I do like to have a lighter option for later in the night. That said, I do consider Yuengling a non-beer-snob beer. I think you have plenty of options for people who are interested in drinking fancy beer.

I am guessing the museum probably has a pepsi contract? It might be weird, but I always think Pepsi tastes awful as a mixer for liquor. I don’t know much about mixed drinks, but it sounds like you have plenty of options.

I do not believe in crappy beer (just say NO to bud and coors!) but if you feel like you want to accomodate all of your guest’s tastes, I think that Corona is a good compromise. I am not a fan of PBR (and it’s too hipster!!!!!)

I’m a TOTAL cocktail girl (can’t stand wine, champagne, or beer - go figure!), and one of my favs is something that’s super simple to make. It’s basically a “spirited” cream soda, made by mixing ginger ale with vanilla vodka. Yummmm! Makes me excited just thinking about it. We’re including it in our DIY bar for sure. It does require buying a specialty vodka, though, but for me it’s totally worth it. :-)

I think Corona is a good compromise for a lighter beer or Blue Moon. I have not had Yuengling, but looking at what you choose I think a wheat beer would be a good addition - that’s what a lot of people drink here. But I don’t think you need to have Bud or something.
