I love my mum. She has been there for my dad and us kids through thick and thin and always puts our needs before her own. However, this can mean she forgets to look after herself at times. Mum should have the best, so when we went shopping for her mother-of-the-bride dress I wanted to make sure that she found something that she would feel beautiful in and not something that she “just got because it would do.” I want her to feel excited about how she looks on my wedding day because she deserves that and more. Like me, she gets down about her looks, but the wedding is a chance to prove to her how gorgeous she really is.
Mum & Dad
Mum can be quite specific about what she likes when she wants to be. The perfect dress for her has to be “summery,” not too dark-coloured, feminine (not too “formal”), and must “fit” with our garden wedding.
In Mum’s words: “I want to be able to plunk down on a picnic rug and not feel uncomfortable!” For some reason Mum is very anxious that I have a say in her dress, but all I really want is for her to love it—then, I will be happy.
We had been slowly browsing various styles on the internet as spring/summer stock started to flow into the shops here in NZ. Nothing really caught our attention, though. Then yesterday, when we were actually in town to get groceries (not to buy a dress!), something in the window of a little boutique caught my mum’s eye and we decided to go in for a few minutes.
It was a good thing we did…because in there was The One! Mum had to be convinced to try it on because the day was quite cold, but in the end it was worth it. Here is what we found:
Cute, right? The mauvey/pewter colour is gorgeous, the fabric is as light as a feather (Mum and I are very particular when it comes to fabric texture) and it gives off a very ’50s garden party vibe—just what we were looking for! The shop assistants were all jealous they couldn’t pull off the dress like she could.
Another thing the dress has going for it is that it isn’t “traditional MOB,” if you know what I mean. Mum is only 47 so she isn’t really into a suit dress or anything like that.
I just have to give you a look at the shoes she wore when she was trying on the dress. I adore them, but Mum is going to take some convincing to buy them! (Their price isn’t so nice.) Maybe we will find something similar to those shoes but within budget:
(sorry for the blurriness…my camera did not like the lighting in there)
Oh, and do you wanna hear a funny story? When we got back from shopping there was a message from Mr E’s mum waiting for me saying that she had just found her dress as well! Great minds think alike.
I will leave you with one more pic of my mum, happy and smiling in her pretty dress (she hasn’t stopped talking about it since we bought it! I think that is a good sign):
What do you guys think? Did we choose well? I’m really happy I got to be with her when she found her dress, seeing as she couldn’t be there when I found mine.
If you went with your mum to shop for her dress, what was it like?
