Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!
About Mrs. Jellyfish

Many moons ago, I shared with you my grand plans to wear blue shoes as my “something blue.”

Then, I wore said shoes to our city hall ceremony, and they hurt my feet so bad that I ended up going barefoot:

So, even though I loved the look of my blue shoes, I went back to the drawing board in search of the perfect (read: comfortable) wedding shoes. Though I had been adamantly opposed to white/ivory shoes in the past, I decided to broaden my search this time. Mama Jelly and I ordered several pairs from Zappos.com, and I finally found a winner. And to my own surprise, I picked ivory shoes:

I love that the heel isn’t too high! I’m horrible at walking in super-high heels (which for me, is anything over 3.5 inches). I’ve been breaking them in over the past week, and they’re pretty comfy!

So now that I had the shoes, I no longer had my “something blue.” That’s when I starting looking on Etsy for “something blue” ideas. I really loved the idea of having a custom dress label made, with my new initials and wedding date on it in blue. Something like this one:

From Etsy seller Michaelangela

But I wanted it to have special meaning, too, so I asked Bridesmaid Lauren’s mom (who is very dear to me and coincidentally very talented at cross-stitch) if she’d be able to make one for me. She was happy to do so and had it ready for me within a couple weeks! But being the bad blogger I am, I forgot to take a photo of it before handing it over to my alterations lady to sew it into my dress. So I guess you’ll have to wait until after the wedding to see what the label looks like—but it’s very similar to the one pictured above (except done in cross-stitch, not embroidery).

Does your something blue have a special story behind it?

Your new (more comfy) shoes are really pretty :) I’m sure you feet will thank you at the end of the night too!
I love that you had a friend make the tag, what a wonderful keepsake :)

Ha - I talked a big talk about wearing orange and blue shoes with my wedding gown but ended up in ivory shoes as well. :)

Aw, your new shoes are so cute. And I love the idea of a personalized tag. I may have to do this. Great idea.

those are great shoes, and bonus they are comfortable!

I think you would rather have your sanity and your feet than those blue shoes, plus you already have those amazing photos from city hall ceremony.

What a sweet idea, love that custom dress label. very original!

I adore your shoes!

My something blue is very similar. Etsy, as my hero, was a fantastic place to find a custom dress tag, but I wanted something a little different. I am having a kit made, with the tag, embroidery hoop, threaded needles and pattern. The ladies at my shower will be doing all the work, I want each one of their stitches in the pattern. Then, morning of, I’ll have my mother sew it into the liner of my dress. Of all things, I think that moment will make me cry.

@Farfromachildbride: Isn’t that funny? I guess we’re more traditional than we think! (at least when it comes to shoes, haha)
@karisheep544: Wow, that is such a special and personal way of making a dress tag, I love that idea!!
@leslie: I know, we ordered the blue ones too but for some reason I liked the ivory more! Surprised myself with that decision!

I love cross-stitch I bet it’s adorable and homey and very personal. And your shoes are great! I’m with you on the 3 inches or less rule. Super high heels are NOT worth the pain.

My blue will be the aquamarine in my engagement ring. My FI’s also hinted that he might try to get me a set of aquamarine earrings as my wedding gift, but we’ll see where finances are by the time the wedding gets here!

Oh what a lovely idea. I’m thinking it’s highly likely that I’ll consign my dress after the wedding though, so probably not a great idea for me. [I'm going the blue shoes route]

@Miss Jellyfish: We’re shoe twins! I fell in love with SW’s Marimbow back in the winter - they are my something blue though - I got them in the “midnight satin” colour. Aren’t they comfy?!

Sorry our blue shoes tried to eat your feet! What a shame because they were so pretty; however, the ivory ones are gorgeous too. I hope they are kind to your feet on the big day.

How sweet and beautiful! My something blue was a blue ribbon that I pinned inside my dress, to attach the sixpence that my grandmother wore in her shoe at her wedding. (She had since had it mounted as a pendant.) It was also my something borrowed, since I’m now mailing it back to my grandmother for her to pass along to my cousin’s fiancee for their upcoming wedding.

I am really bad with high heels to and if I end up going that route I’d like something low like yours. I’ve never heard of sewing custom labels in before, what a great idea!
