Puttin’ A Ring On It

August 27th, 2010 @ 10:35 am by Mrs. Glasses

We are taking our pre-ceremony, post-courthouse mini-moon soon. As I’ve mentioned, we are heading to Thailand for four days. We are super excited, but like everything else, we are doing this honeymoon on a budget. Lucky for us the yen is going strong, and we can stretch it a long way in Thailand. We’d really like to pick up our wedding rings there! Smart thinking, eh?

Although my parents are generously paying for our wedding, we are paying for our rings. We’re looking for something low cost, and I am very concerned about the rings being ethically mined and made. We actually have no idea what kind of jewelry we can get in Thailand, but we’ve been surfing my new obsession, Etsy, for inspiration.

I had Mr. Glasses show me some rings he’d like. OK, so I have to be honest here. I don’t like them.

Diamonds? Really?! I don’t even want diamonds! But this is a forever thing (at least, I hope), so to each his own. If that’s the kind of thing he wants, that’s the kind of thing we’ll keep our eyes open for in Bangkok.

I want something delicate and pretty. For some reason, I’m really drawn to intricate metal pieces.

I’m attracted to delicate rings because I never, ever wear accessories, aside from headbands…I have a weird Blair Waldorf thing with headbands. Anywho, this is good because our budget is $500 for each ring. So streets of Bangkok, what do you have for us? I can’t wait to show the hive our findings!

What kind of rings are you attracted to?

Well, McHusband and I both had brushed metal rings. His in titanium and mine 18k white gold. I say had because on the fourth day of marriage, McHusband lost his while we were at the beach. So glad we didn’t spend more on rings. According to the lifeguard, this is a normal thing, so no expensive second ring for McHusband.

@TheFutureMcBride: Oh no! That’s terrible! I think I’m totally going to lose my ring :(

I’m a fairly traditional gal, so my band is simple white gold with 3 inset diamonds. Mr. 5642; however, is a little rock and roll and wants something a little edgier. We found a really cool titanium band with a stone carved texture. We decided that we’d go with rings that reflect our individual style, instead of matching each other.

@Jennifer5642: We are going that route too! I’m simple and he likes something flashy.

I’m not a huge fan of the alternative metal men’s rings, either. The fact that they can’t be resized or refinished, and the fact that most are really hard (hence no resizing), but still scratch/wear easily, means we went with something easier to maintain and a lot more flexible.

I’m really excited to see what you end up with! What a cool place to find your wedding rings.

if you’re going to buy rings in thailand, do your homework. big time.

and if you’re super concerned about it being ethically mined, thailand probably isn’t the place to do your shopping unless you are an expert on this kind of thing. have you guys done much traveling around southeast asia? finding a reputable place is going to be difficult, if not impossible.

personally, i would want a ring that is going to last my whole lifetime. the streets of thailand is a place for low quality funky stuff. kind of like china.

(but eat some pineapple fried rice there. and then eat some more. sooooooo gooood. and no matter what any tuk tuk driver tells you, the place you want to go is not closed and there is no buddha day and the monks are not praying for an hour at whatever temple it is you’re trying to get to)

I LOVE that braided gold ring! Beautiful! FYI on the men’s rings, we found that the really cheap ones for him were so thin that they would cut into his skin on the edges. We found something called a “European comfort fit” that didn’t cost much more, but was a little more comfortable on him.

Neato! I can’t wait to see what you guys can find. Mr. L had such a hard time finding a ring he liked and I am glad he finally did! The best part was the much cheaper price tag!

FI wanted a plain tungsten band. Nothing brushed. Nothing with an inlay. No grooves. Nothing. He took about 30 seconds to pick it out and another 30 to figure out his size.

Mine took some work but it’s an eternity band that matches my new setting for my e-ring.

I actually had the old setting turned into a plain band that I can wear to the beach or whenever I’m worried about damaging my “real” rings.

Ohhh, we got some beautiful jewelry in Bangkok. Some cheap pieces suited to my 12-14 year old self (that I still have - they held up pretty well actually) and some beautiful pieces my parents bought that they still wear 20 years later. I can’t wait to see what you find.

Rings look good, but I have to admit to being more excited to hear about your travelings in Thailand… We’re considering it for our honeymoon and want to see just how far money can stretch :)

We both LOVE tungsten (there’s an inside joke for it, too. It’ll probably come out on our blog at some point…). We’re going with a pair that has a celtic feel to it that we found on Amazon (shocking, I know, lol).

The pair we want is fairly inexpensive, but we know they hold up. So far, my FI has not managed to bend his yet (he bent his sterling silver ring all the heck as well as gold bands. he’s hard on rings, lol).

I sooo can’t wait till we can buy ‘em!!!

I love the gold braided ring you posted. Bario Neal makes something similar (the Aldine band) that I admire on a regular basis.

Does your man happen to wear a lot of stripes?

You should check Brilliant Earth for recycled metals and Canadian diamonds.
