About Mrs. Zebra

Generations

August 28th, 2010 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Zebra

I want to preface this post by saying I am certainly no photographer. In fact, photography is the only class I ever dropped in college. Hey, don’t blame me, blame the procrastination, and the eight outfits that needed to be finished before the fashion show. I’ve got an amazing point and shoot (as a gift for being MOH for my Sissy-in-Law), but that’s about all the tricks I’ve got up my photography sleeve.

So a few weeks ago, I stopped by my parent’s house for a little visit. My mother lurves her some jewelry, and she was fresh from a visit to her favorite jewelry store in Boston. For as long as I can remember, my mother has worn my Grandma Rosie’s engagement ring and wedding band on a necklace. The rings are so fragile that I pulled the ring in half when I was a little girl. After that little oopsie, my mom had the rings soldered together. My Aunt Millie passed away a few years ago, and my mother inherited her wedding band. (I have a post planned to explain in depth how much this really means to me. So please, bear with.) At her recent jewelry-store visit, she had all three rings soldered together. I realize that it may not look aesthetically pleasing to the rest of you, but trust me: it’s always the heart that counts. So I present to you what my mom affectionately refers to as “the girls.”

The last two pictures are of all our rings. In the first of the two pictures, mine is at the top, Momma’s in the middle and “the girls” are on the bottom. I have two other maternal aunts (Mae & Flo), but their rings reside on their fingers, thank God! Before you raise an eyebrow, yes, I indeed have an Aunt Flo. She’s pretty much the coolest person I know, and I have her to thank for my Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder obsession. Not your average Aunt Flo, huh?

This trip was not just about soldering rings together, though. My mother reset her sapphire from yellow gold to a white-gold-halo setting. I, being the stupid blogger I am, neglected to take any photos of the ring. Rest assured it is gorgeous. I asked my mother if it could be my “something blue.” My undies will be my something old, my dress will be the new. Does anyone have something I can borrow? Anyone? :)

What are some of your family heirlooms significant to your wedding day? Is there a special story behind the object(s)?

I agree! It IS always the heart that counts :) Those are some lovely rings. My mom asked me if I wanted one of her rings because I don’t have an e-ring and while I think hers are very nice and simple, I think it will be extra special when I finally have my wedding band on!

What a beautiful story! It sounds like “the girls” will be a family treasure for years to come! Originally, my mom had planned to give me my great-grandmother’s wedding band to wear as my own. I was super excited about this, but when I took it to the jeweler to get it resized, they said it was too fragile for them to touch. Saaaad. :(

The diamond in my engagement ring was my great grand-mother’s engagement diamond (she was married in 1922). I will also be wearing a ring of my late grandmother’s during the wedding.

Very pretty, Zeeb! The diamonds on my e-ring are from Mr. Barrettes’ grandmother, but I got to choose a new setting once we were engaged. Will def. be passing it down…

There were several significant family heirlooms present on our wedding day. I wore my paternal grandmother’s pearls, which she had given me just prior to last Christmas, just a few months before she died. Inside the lining of my dress, I used a blue ribbon to pin my maternal grandmother’s sixpence (mounted into a pendant) that she had carried in her shoe on her wedding day so many years ago. Around the stems of my bouquet, I pinned a piece of lace which I had cut from my maternal great-grandmother’s wedding dress. Next to our guestbook, we displayed a photo album of our grandparents’ and parents’ wedding photos, which was a gift from our parents that they presented to us at the rehearsal dinner. Finally, the solitaire in my engagement ring was passed down from my MIL, to be passed along to the next generation when our kids get married. I love heirlooms. :)

I love hearing that you are incorporating special somethings from the past in your wedding. I sewed a piece of my FMIL’s wedding dress into my FSIL’s gown for her something old just recently.

i wore a ring of my mothers on my right hand that was a gift to her from my grandfather on her 16th birthday - she gave it to me when i turned 21, so that was my something old. My dress was new and I wore a vintage fur coat that I “Borrowed” from the costume shop where I work. undies were blue!

Love it!! My mom has a ring that has a piece of jade set in there, 4 generations ago it was a full jade ring, somewhere along the way, my great grandmother took a spill when she was wearing it and it shattered into 3 pieces. My grandmother set the three pieces into three separate gold rings and my mom and her two sister in laws each have one.
