You Crazy GIRRRRRL?

August 30th, 2010 @ 8:07 am by Mrs. Zebra

DIY calligraphy? You crazy girl! Nope…just cheap. And hell, I know how to do it. You see, in addition to being a fashion design major, I attempted a graphic design minor a little later in my years. (Unfortunately, I ran out of credits…whoops!) I’ll never forget the sweet professor who had to literally hold my hand through the first couple of classes I took with him. I didn’t even know how to use a Mac for cripes sake! My first graphic class was two parts, and the first part was learning the art of beautiful writing. I’m not sure there was much beautiful about what I did, except the Tennyson quotes I used…but I digress. The only thing standing between me and my DIY calligraphy…I need to create an alphabet.

Oh yeah…and I can’t find my pens. Are they called pens? I forget. Anywho…once I find those suckers…it’s game on.

Like everything I do, I’d just copy something that I really like. Pick out a free font and copy it! And um, find your pens. If that’s what they’re called. I think you can totally do it if you have a background! Excited to see how it turns out.

I know a couple of the bloggers have talked about their faux-calligraphy. I saw one last week. And it was really good! It was Ms. Plaid: http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/08/25/diy-calligraphy-5/#more-158720

That’s so exciting! I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Isn’t it funny how all those random college classes are suddenly coming into play? I thank God for that semester of graphic design!!

I wanted to do this, but I ran out of time and patience. I bet yours will be great!

Way to go for it, girl! I went into it as ill-prepared as you feel, but ended up not only addressing all the invitation envelopes, but doing all of the writing projects for our whole wedding. It didn’t look pro status or anything, but I’m proud of how I did! Just pick a couple fonts you like, copy out your favorite version of each letter with a calligraphy pen, and go for it!
