About Mrs. Starfish

No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem

August 30th, 2010 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Starfish

Mr. Starfish and I are getting married at a venue that also happens to be a restaurant. Our venue is kind of iconic in Newport. Whenever I tell people where we’re getting married, they think beach, bikinis, cocktails, bands, flip flops and summer. I’ve been asked way too many times if I’ve tried their famed Astro Bomb.

The venue is on the beach and has a patio bar with live music during happy hour. I know many people who travel from Boston for the day for happy hour at the ABC. It’s pretty legendary, but when I say we are getting married there, people are kind of confused. It’s known as a restaurant, not a beautiful wedding venue. To be honest, I was pretty skeptical of the venue myself

Mr. Starfish and I had been there many Fridays during our senior year for the happy hour buffet. All you do is buy one drink and you get free food, which is awesome for a college kid on a budget. I don’t know why people didn’t take advantage of it more. This is how we knew the ABC. We spent two years living a block away from the site, and never noticed a wedding.

When Mr. Starfish hinted about a proposal, I started doing research on Newport venues. I knew they had a long wait and wanted to know our options far in advance.

While searching, I realized that the ABC did weddings. I wondered where, because it seemed random to do it in the restaurant area, but because the venue overlooks our college campus, I knew we had to look.

We checked it out, and the ballroom upstairs blew us away. It was elegant, spacious, and had amazing views of the ocean, the cliffwalk, and of course, Salve. My visions of beach goers drinking Astro Bombs went away and we chose our venue on the spot.

Since then, we’ve been back to the ABC many times and I still had not tried an Astro Bomb. Well, that changed this weekend. Mr. Starfish and I headed to Newport to finalize some wedding plans. After meeting with our wedding coordinator, we went to the outdoor patio and enjoyed the ABC for what it’s known for.

I love that our venue isn’t all about weddings. We’ll be able to go back for celebratory drinks and anniversary dinners in the years to come.

Is your venue known for something other than weddings?

Sounds like a great place! Ours is known for whitewater rafting, so people thought us crazy when we said we’re getting married at the restaurant of a rafting company. Then they came to the venue and realized it was fantastic, beautiful, and fun. Everyone had a great time and no one thought anything about it. I’m sure the same will happen with you.

We’re getting married in an art museum - I love that we can go back over the years and enjoy the different collections of art together!

This place sounds awesome! I’m not down in Newport much but if I am, I’m definitely checking it out. I’ve always wanted to get married on or near the beach, with a beach reception. Basically you are planning my dream wedding. I can’t wait to see it!

I went to college in Boston and have spent some really good times in Newport. As I was reading your post I was wondering if you were getting married at the ABC and am so excited that you are! Now, I just need to get back there because I’ve never had an Astro Bomb either!

Our venue was in a historic Farmers Market. I also like that we can go back to visit. We’ve been to a roller derby bout and an Artini event there and I look forward to going to more events there!

I was just talking about those Astro Bombs the other day. Yummy! The venue is PERFECT though and a great idea. If you’re looking for a nice place to stay your wedding night, try the Chandler right down the street. Stunning.

Aww how fun! We will also get to enjoy our venue for it’s main purpose… Wine tasting! We had been there before we got engaged, and we will continue to go back for many years to come :)

Our venue is known for its stupendously delicious wines! One huge perk of getting married at a fantastic winery is that, as our contact at the venue put it, you have the opportunity to become a part of the family through attending release events and bottling events etc at the winery time and again through the years. I’m really looking forward to special times at our beautiful venue when we can reminisce about the day when we were married there.

Our venue is known for being an art gallery, but there are plenty of weddings here.
