October Flowers

August 30th, 2010 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Glasses

I’ve declared my love publicly for anemones, ranunculus, and peonies. I’ve also lamented at you about how they aren’t available to us October brides. But soon we’ll be picking out our flowers at a wholesale warehouse my mom, the florist, uses. It’s time to get serious about floral decisions. It’s no use crying about what I can’t have. So what options are available to us fall brides who aren’t having a fall-themed wedding?

The dahlia. I have to admit, I’m not crazy about them. But they do provide an interesting perspective, don’t they?

The zinnia and the chrysanthemum, respectively. I haven’t been around these too much, but again, I think they are also very interesting.

Last but not least, we’ve got the marigold. They look like giant billy buttons, and I enjoy them!

Of course, October brides also have the option of using flowers available year round.

Put away your Martha Stewart poms, hive, because the carnation does it all. I was anti-carnation for a long time—I equated them with grandma flowers! But I love the look of these, and now I’m excited to incorporate carnations into our decor.

Babies breath, calla lilies, roses, and orchids! Oh my!

OK, so it looks like I’ve really done my research. My mom the florist says, “If you’re on a budget, use flowers that are in season!” We’re also trying to keep our little backyard shindig green by using locally grown flowers rather than having flowers flown in. All of these options will be available to us in our area. We’ll probably use the fluffiest roses we can find, coupled with dahlias and carnations. And maybe some silk anemones…thanks for the suggestion, hive!

What kind of flowers are you using?

I love all these flowers and ESPECIALLY love the hanging flower thingy! I definitely love marigolds… they are so pretty and PERFECT for the fall. I also like sunflowers :)

I think your flower selection sounds excellent! I’m usually anti-silk flowers, but I think that if you love anemones, tucking a few fake ones into your real bouquet is a fabulous idea! Looking forward to seeing how your beautiful backyard wedding comes together! :)

There are a certain kind of rose (cabbage rose, maybe?) that look a lot like ranunculas. My florist suggested using them since they’re cheaper. Because, yeah, I LOVE ranunculas, but did not want to pay the premium for them in October!

Dahlias are my favorite flower, I was actually super-bummed when I realized they weren’t in season and I couldn’t have them for our spring wedding :(

Awesome post! I too am NOT having a fall themed wedding in Ocotber. My florist did give me a list of flowers that she’s using, but I forget what they are, lol. I’m sure they’ll be fab though. Uh…I hope!

Love your choices! We have to meet with our planner/florist to pick our flowers but I think hydrangeas will be a top choice for us.

They all look gorgeous! Love your flower selection. You just changed my perspective on the carnation as well. ;)
