About Mrs. Husky

The Biggest Winner

August 30th, 2010 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. Husky

You would not believe how my luck has changed since becoming an engaged woman. No, seriously! Since August ’09, I’ve won toasting glasses, a beauty day for me and my five closest girlfriends, a free engagement session…

Do you want to be lucky too? Simply visit a Bridal Expo, and fill out the form that identifies you as a bride. Then just sit back and wait for the emails and phone calls to come pouring in. Constantly. And all you have to do is dedicate every ounce of free time you possess to attending two-to-three hour seminars! Does that sound fun to you? Yeah, it doesn’t sound fun to me either.

When the first call came, I was genuinely excited. But as the calls continued to come in, I soon realized that the majority of these “prizes” were a lot like the timeshare sales events:

You get a “free” weekend at a resort, only to spend the entirety of it being schmoozed by the salesman.

I thought I would share a few things I have learned during this experience:

  1. My first suggestion, and the one I most regret not knowing ahead of time, is to create a separate email address for all things wedding. Use this when trying on dresses, requesting photographer information, or attending “bridal expos.” I’m not suggesting creating a dummy account you will never look at—in fact, a lot of the wedding-related email I have received has turned out to be quite useful. But when the wedding is over, the last thing I will care about is the sample sale at my bridal salon, or the $500 print credit from a popular photographer.
  2. If attending a bridal show, only sign up for the “drawings” (I use that word very generously) that you are actually interested in. Because, chances are, you will win. Don’t enter a drawing for a free engagement session if you’ve already booked your photographer—you will end up paying for the engagement session, even if it’s not in cash. But if you are truly interested in those crystal toasting flutes, and are willing to sit through a 1-2 hour sales pitch to get them, then go ahead! Drop in your name (and new email address).
  3. There are some really awesome freebies you can get without doing anything you wouldn’t already be doing—like registering! Many brands offer incentives to encourage you to register for their items. By simply including $xxx worth of their brand on your registry, you can qualify for a free gift. Some of these are more enticing than others, of course. Here are a few links to several popular stores’ incentive programs:
  4. Some stores host “Registry Events,” where you can nibble hors d’oeuvres and sip champagne while scanning your china. Often they offer special incentives or free gifts as well. Macy’s, Williams-Sonoma, and Crate & Barrel are just a few that host these events.

The “winner” calls have mostly stopped coming these days. I’m not sure if that’s because it’s getting so close to our wedding date, and they know I probably wouldn’t have time to attend their seminars, or if it could have something to do with my immediate interruption when they would call to tell me I’d won.

Have you experienced any “bridal perks”? Or have you won anything worth sitting through a sales pitch?

No major perks for me, but I did win a flower girl cone from a wedding show.

this is an awesome post. At the first Bridal show I went to, you had to get all the vendors signatures to prove that you went to all the booths to qualify for one of the 100 doorprizes!

I won a $1,000 videocredit.. which I didn’t use.. bummer..

Beware of the signing up at Cookware booth - you will receive a phone call about a free trip you’ve won!..

We set up a dummy email account for the bridal show we went to, and you’re correct that you get a lot of messages but that some are useful. Overall I’m quite glad we went to the expo that we did; no harassing phone calls (I don’t think I gave out a real phone number anywhere, just the dummy email) and we got a few actual free gifts that I am quite enjoying using. And some of the discounts that vendors offer at bridal shows really can’t be beat elsewhere.

Another suggestion — print out your own labels with your name, address, email and phone # before hand. Only chumps pay $10 at the bridal show for a $.03 page of labels.

Oh yes, I remember when I received my first call for my free minimoon. I was sitting in a hospital waiting room waiting for my grandmother to come out of a 5 hr surgery. Needless to say, I wasn’t very interested in the trip at that time…

I was totally scammed into attending a bridal expo at Bloomingdales which was the biggest waste of time during my planning process. They promised Silvia Winestock cake samples and an opportunity to register, of course when I got there they looked at me like I had 4 heads when I said I was there to register and the cake was gone (I got there 30 mins before it started).

I also signed up to enter a contest to win free photography which was a total scam. They had all my info and stalked me even after I said I booked a different photographer!

Ugghh I regret not making another email for those bridal events! I have so many unnecessary e-mails to fish through and cancel. I was lucky and did win a free facial, but it wasn’t really a prize as much as a ploy to convince you to buy products, etc.

How late is too late to start a separate email account? We’ve already been meeting with photographers and salons. Do you think it’s too late?

No wins for me, but I don’t really enter many contests.

OMG same exact thing happened to me!! The only thing we actually got was because we did sit in on one of those boring seminars. It was a total let down, when we figured out we had to do something in order to claim our prize.

I hope there were some brides that read your advice, because it’s soo good! We set up a different email account and it’s been so nice not have the junk we’ve gotten clogging our real mailboxes!

SAME thing happened to me. I did learn one thing -bring mailing labels so all you have to do is fill out your *new* email address. Yeah forgot that one small detail. I am still getting bridal emails, and it’s past the 1 yr mark! Those seminar people called AGAIN right after they tried to bamboozle us at a 2 hr seminar from hell worth a few nights hotel stay that was harder to get than the Koh-i-Noor! According to them, I had won! I said, “Again?” That got her off the phone real quick!

The department store events aren’t actually scams, and are worth going to. I got nice wine goblets and a Swiss Army tote from their event, & a the dreaded heart dish from C&B, but both had food and drinks. It made registering bearable.

I don’t plan to go to any bridal shows but this is really interesting. I always try and enter giveaways on bridal blog I read, I wonder if there’s the same kind of deal with those? I’ve never won anything off of those either.

I won a $1000 suit hire voucher at a bridal expo just for collecting stamps at check points.

I got the ‘you’ve won’ call twice so far for a bridal show I never even made it to! I got suckered into listening to the whole list of my ‘fabulous’ prizes then realized at the end I would have to attend a ‘cooking demonstration’ for some pots and pans - luckily my Mister works night so it wouldnt be feasible for us to EVER attend! :) I’ve learned my lesson though - I wont be returning or taking any of those phone calls going forward!

@Miss Glasses: I think the blog contests tend to be more legit - they typically have one (or a handful) of prizes that are awarded to one (or a handful) of winners. The bridal expo “prizes” are usually awarded to anyone willing to sit through their sales demonstrations.

I have entered so many bridal related things, but have actually been so careful to read the fine print and think twice before hitting “enter” I’ve actually lucked out here at the bee a couple of times! I also agree with the separate account, I am so happy that we sent our engagement announcement via that account and have been using it for wedding related stuff since!
