Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
About Mrs. Glasses

WWDBD?

August 31st, 2010 @ 12:03 pm by Mrs. Glasses

To dress my Englishman, I look to another sexy Brit…

Not only is he super foiiiiiiiiiine, he has impeccable taste in clothes. So I ask myself what we should all ask ourselves from time to time, WWDBD? What would David Beckham do?

I love these looks, but I think I’d like a combination: a black skinny tie and a vest.

WWDBD? : wedding los angeles menswear Untitle Black vest found on eBay for $19.99

Black skinny tie for $18.00

Gap black khaki for $49.50

Throw in a pair of black chucks and white shirt (already owned)

Total: $87.49

Mr. G doesn’t care much about clothes; his daily uniform is a gamer t-shirt and a pair of beat up old jeans. While I don’t care for shoes, I love clothes and I want Mr. G looking like a GQ piiiiiiiiiimp on our wedding day. I’ve been carefully crafting this look for a while now in the back of my head. I think the key to it is the fit. The black trousers shouldn’t be so long that they drag on the floor; they should be a little tighter but not too tight, hugging the butt (TMI: Mr. G has a nice one!) but not too tight in the thigh. The white shirt should be crisp. The vest shouldn’t be too high cut; it should show off the skinny tie nicely.

There’s just one problem: Mr. G is hellbent on wearing a tux. I have no idea why, as I’m sure my wedding dress won’t be so formal and our dress code is only semi-formal. On our website, we informed people that jeans and t-shirts are not appropriate but that suits and ties are optional. He’ll definitely be the most formal person there! I guess this is just one of the many downfalls of planning a wedding from abroad. We will be hitting up tux shops, the mall (if I can convince him to try on some of my beloved vests), and wherever else in October, the month of the wedding.

What is your groom’s style inspired by?

We have no clue yet what Mr. E will be wearing, but I really like the looks you posted. I’m sure Mr. G will look great in whatever you decide on once you get to the states.

My FI was set on a tux as well - he figures he’s not going to wear one for anything else any time soon and he wears a suit everyday to work sooo he wanted to be more formal. Granted we are planning a formal wedding lol. He was really picky about the tux though - he didn’t want the traditional look so we went with a more modern tux with a jacket that doesn’t button or have a lapel. I was skeptical at first but if he’s happy who cares!

Yes! I wanted Mr. Swiss in something similar, but we are renting from Men’s Warehouse and American suits/tuxes are just not cut as nice (tightly) as European ones :o/ Oh well. Looking forward to how your man’s attire turns out!

DROOOOOL!! Over both :-)

I think this is a motto I should tell my FI to think about more often- WWDBD?

@Swiss Miss to Bee: I live in the UK, and it still seems impossible to rent a suit like these- nice and ’slim’. I have gotten pretty close, but really you have to buy them :-(

I love it! I love the style you chose. It’s a sexy yet sophistocated style. :)

Fred Astaire … he insists on wearing tails. I talked him out of wearing his white dance shoes for the ceremony (why, why, why?) but I think that will be my only influence on his attire.

my guy is dead set on wearing a tux as well even though i figured our wedding day vibe was more relaxed and playful since that’s how we are as real people. i told him i saw him in a nice suit but he said he wanted a tux. when i asked him why he said it’s because “the pictures will look nicer.” um. ok. lol

oh gosh, DB is hawwwwt! And he’s been hot for a LONG TIME!

We dressed our groomsmen in vests + skinny ties, all purchased off ebay for like, $20 a set! It all looked awesome and the quality was just fine!

Woooooo! JT is looking HOT in that photo. Is it weird for me to say that I feel that English men can really pull off a skinny suit (esp with a skinny tie and vest!) better than most? It just fits my image of a sharp British fella. I say, go for the skinny suit, Mr. G!

actually semi-formal says that guys are suppose to wear suits. i combed the internet trying to find what each term meant because i was going to include something on our invitations. i found weddingchannel very useful for finding guest attire outlines. i’ve tried to include the link in my comment a few times but for some reason my comment isn’t posting. kinda aggravating.

i think the term “outdoor chic” or “garden chic” is cute! weddingchannel had another article that broke down the terms that was useful.

@airythia: Thanks for the info! I didn’t know that. Garden chic eh? Sounds perfect!

Hmmmm, I wonder why so many of our men insist on tuxes? Some kind of James Bond complex? :D

And also, update, Mr. G and I were looking for black pants for him at H&M and I made him try on my vision of his wedding day look. It turns out he’s really, really hot in a vest. RAWR!

You may be able to try on vests at a tux shop. My husband just rented a “tux” from a tuxedo store and it was very suit-like and even included a vest! I hope you can convince him - maybe on the basis of cost? A traditional tux is super expensive and not really re-wearable, whereas your outfit choice is much more economical and chic.

There must be *something* he wants more at the wedding than a tux - he doesn’t want to spend his __insert favorite wedding item here___ money on a tux, right?!

I feel like morning suits especially are the British standard for weddings. Maybe let this one go and let him wear what he wants? Or go shopping and see what works when he actually tries it on. Have you ever even seen him in a tux and has he ever worn one?
