I have been saying for.ev.er. that I would buy myself a beautiful pair of designer shoes for my wedding. Honestly, when else will I be able to buy a pair of designer shoes? This was around the time of Carrie Bradshaw FALSELY stating that Manolos are around $500. Dear Carrie, riddle me this: why’d you make me (and every other girl in the world) fall in love with these $1000 suckers? Huh? HUH!?

Last weekend was our bridal shower, and it rained big buckets of lurrrve here in Los Angeles! It was torrential, actually.
And totally amazing.
Remember when I wrote about my dress and how I’ve been overcome with gratitude while planning this wedding shindig of ours and blah blah blah? Well folks, during our shower the gratitude reached critical mass, and now my heart has swelled so big it just might burst right out of my chest! I’m not sure how I’m gonna make it through the next three (three!) weeks, and I certainly hope it doesn’t affect the fit of my dress. I’m just saying…
You need a few examples? No worries. I got examples.
My mom sat in the airport for almost 12 hours just to get a flight to Los Angeles. My mom was here, you guys! I don’t even have words for this, but it made me SO happy. And I think she had fun, too:

Over the course of wedding planning, many a bride or groom will find themselves mucking around legal paperwork to make sure everything can happen.

In late June Mr. L and I realized that if we wanted to go on our Mexican honeymoon, we would need to apply for our passports (mine was long expired and Mr. L never had one). So, we grabbed up all of our information and our needed proofs of being and brought it to our county clerk (luckily, we did this days before the price increase).
Little did I know that when you apply for a passport, they send off your birth certificate during the verification process.

It wasn’t a week after I became engaged that I began looking at all the wedding accessory websites and shops for something to get for my friends to ask them to be my bridesmaids.
I saw everything from robes to makeup cases to tote bags to cookie cards, but I couldn’t find anything personal enough. Plus, there wasn’t much for asking, “Will you be my bridesmaid?” as there was for thanking bridesmaids.
I was really set on getting something. I didn’t want to rush off and call or text my friends because I wanted to make it more of an “occasion” and present them with something that shows how much their support means to me.
Not to mention, I’m a stickler for presents and surprises anyway!
I did found some really cute, handmade cards on Etsy (a bride’s best friend), but unfortunately, the seller was pregnant and not taking any orders. I kept looking, but nothing really struck my fancy, and I was starting to run out of time. I know my friends were wondering if I was even going to have a bridal party!
Finally, I took matters into my own hands and made a visit to Michaels.
The result?

I’m starting to feel like I’m seeing our wedding colors everywhere! This weekend I went to a bridal-jewelry high-tea event for a magazine and was a little early (as I normally am—I always feel so bad if I’m late making someone wait on me), so I decided to kill some time at Marshall’s.
I had no intention of buying anything; I just wanted to walk around for 10 or 15 minutes and then head to the tea. Well, I found myself in the home-goods section, and—lo and behold—there were two baskets there, one green and one blue, that just happened to be our colors! I sent a picture message to Mr. E and my mom to get their opinions on them. Of course, like usual when I’m trying to hurry, I wasn’t getting any cell service in that building! So here I am walking around with these two baskets trying to find service to send the picture message…
By the time I finally found service at the front of the building, I realized that I only had eight minutes to get to the tea! I figured I would just buy them and decide if we could use them once I got home. If not, I could always return them, so I bought them and hauled butt to the tea.

Mr. Starfish and I are getting married at a venue that also happens to be a restaurant. Our venue is kind of iconic in Newport. Whenever I tell people where we’re getting married, they think beach, bikinis, cocktails, bands, flip flops and summer. I’ve been asked way too many times if I’ve tried their famed Astro Bomb.
The venue is on the beach and has a patio bar with live music during happy hour. I know many people who travel from Boston for the day for happy hour at the ABC. It’s pretty legendary, but when I say we are getting married there, people are kind of confused. It’s known as a restaurant, not a beautiful wedding venue. To be honest, I was pretty skeptical of the venue myself
Mr. Starfish and I had been there many Fridays during our senior year for the happy hour buffet. All you do is buy one drink and you get free food, which is awesome for a college kid on a budget. I don’t know why people didn’t take advantage of it more. This is how we knew the ABC. We spent two years living a block away from the site, and never noticed a wedding.
When Mr. Starfish hinted about a proposal, I started doing research on Newport venues. I knew they had a long wait and wanted to know our options far in advance.

I really love paper and all things paper related. I think gorgeous stationery is so much fun, and I love going to stores like The Paper Place or Paper Things in Toronto and browsing through all of their fantastic papers, cards…etc. I love picking out new thank you notes and I may or may not have random blank invitations stored away in my closet that I bought because they’re pretty and I might have some use for in the future.
However, one of my favourite things to look at in paper stores are wax seals. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Here are a few examples:
I’ve declared my love publicly for anemones, ranunculus, and peonies. I’ve also lamented at you about how they aren’t available to us October brides. But soon we’ll be picking out our flowers at a wholesale warehouse my mom, the florist, uses. It’s time to get serious about floral decisions. It’s no use crying about what I can’t have. So what options are available to us fall brides who aren’t having a fall-themed wedding?

It took less time to build our PVC faux-to booth than it takes to watch an episode of Project Runway. And considering the hours our guests spent having fun and hamming it up in the booth, and then the many more hours Mr. PC and I have spent falling off the couch laughing at the resulting photos, I’d say our time was more than recouped.
Our friends and family were true top models, and wowed us with variety when it came to their poses…we saw tiger growls (perhaps that was just my pose), couples kissing, Blue Steel gazes…
I was happy to see my expensive props put to good use (a spray painted IKEA frame I already owned, fake flowers [note how many people put that flower in their mouth, including me], handmade felt mustaches).
Yeah, that’s right. I threw an extra “chica” in there. Cue porn music! Haha, just kidding.
I decided pretty early on in my planning that I wanted to do a boudoir shoot for Mr. Plaid. I spoke with my photographer, Nathan Russell, and we made it happen about a month ago.
I’ve got pictures back, baby! And let me just tell y’all, it was so much fun! I thought I’d be crazy nervous, but I was so relaxed. Let me clue you in on why I think I was so calm.
I decided to do the shoot at my sister’s apartment, and it worked out brilliantly. We rearranged some furniture, I made some quick decorations using an extra canvas and some fabric I had lying around, and I draped the bed with white sheets.
I brought five outfits with me and love every single one. My photographer recommended multiples so that we’d have options. Here are mine:
-Rugby shirt, boy shorts, tube socks, xBox game controller (Mr. Plaid likes him some video games)
-’50s style dress, apron, mixing bowl, whisk, spatula, cookbooks, cupcake (I’m a pastry chef)
-my wedding night nightie, sheer robe, veil, high heels
-blue men’s button-up shirt, black bra and underwear, tie, pearls
-lacy tank top, boy shorts
So without further ado (and Dad Plaid, I know you read my blog sometimes, please stop reading NOW. Close your browser page immediately!), here are some of my favorite shots:

Looking back on our fabulous honeymoon trip to England and France, we both agree that the highlight was our day trip to Versailles, the over-the-top home and gardens of the Sun King, Marie Antoinette…oh, and a couple other Louises!

Versailles is a very short drive from Paris, so if you’re already in the city, I highly recommend making the trip! When you first pull up to the palace, be prepared for crowds galore.

DIY calligraphy? You crazy girl! Nope…just cheap. And hell, I know how to do it. You see, in addition to being a fashion design major, I attempted a graphic design minor a little later in my years. (Unfortunately, I ran out of credits…whoops!) I’ll never forget the sweet professor who had to literally hold my hand through the first couple of classes I took with him. I didn’t even know how to use a Mac for cripes sake! My first graphic class was two parts, and the first part was learning the art of beautiful writing. I’m not sure there was much beautiful about what I did, except the Tennyson quotes I used…but I digress. The only thing standing between me and my DIY calligraphy…I need to create an alphabet.
::sheepishly waving hello:: Hi, hive.
Simply put, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Sure, the weeks and days leading up to our wedding were crazy, but I was…coping. (If you’re guessing there’s more to that deceptively-simple statement, you’re oh-so very right!) All of what *needed* to get done—and most of what we’d planned to accomplish—was checked off our trusty giant Post-It to-do list.
The big day came.
We smiled. We kissed. We cried. We ate. We danced. We celebrated.* And then we honeymooned.**
Now, a bit of background:

(I wrote this post on July 27th—the night before I was going to leave for the wedding. I thought I was going to post it to the hive the day I left. But with so much to do, I guess I forgot to do that part! Anyways I thought you might like to read about how frazzled I was!!! So, here it is…)
I am a mess, bees! My apartment is a disaster. I already left one of my bridesmaid’s gowns at work (it was delivered there by the tailor but I forgot to bring it home. Thankfully my co-worker was thinking and called me). But by the time you read this I am going to be up in the sky somewhere between New Jersey and California. It is 10 PM the night before we leave. At this moment my fiance is doing laundry, I am printing out the menu cards, and I am freaking out about leaving my cat for twelve whole days. I didn’t think there were so many things still to-do last minute, but then this month totally snuck by me. July has been crazy!
