About Me: When my best friend dragged me to a toga party in our freshmen year of college, I was not expecting to meet my future husband; but seven years later, here we are. I'm a crazy-organized planner at heart, and I am a great lover of random trivia, books, chocolate, blogs, new and exciting adventures, mockumentary-style television, and anything heavily flavored with bright orange fake cheese powder. We're planning a festive and fun mini-destination wedding in the place where we met: fabulous Pittsburgh, PA! I can't wait to marry the man I love!
GOOD NEWS, everyone! (Said in the voice of Professor Farnsworth from Futurama.) Our plan for providing our own alcohol at the reception has evolved quite a bit since way back when I first posted about it, and I’m excited to say that we’re getting close to having our DIY booze options all figured out!
Mrs. Plaid, AustinAge and Occupation: 26, Pastry ChefFiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Cabinetry CarpenterEngagement Date: August 8, 2009Wedding Date: October 2010Venue: Kindred Oaks, GeorgetownAbout Me: I am a Jersey girl born and raised but have since migrated to Texas and embraced its twang and Tex-Mex. I could probably eat chips and queso every day but instead I eat popcorn. I use the word “awesome” way too much but I just can’t seem to stop myself. I am addicted to all things DIY and am planning what I call a Texas-Chic wedding. I love snuggling with my two adorable dogs and of course, my adorable fiance. I can’t wait 'til I can call him my husband some day! October 2010, here we come!
So y’all know that I’m that crazy bride that has decided to make her own cake. But to defend myself, I do have a bit of experience in the cake-baking-and-decorating department.
You’d think being a cake decorator would make choosing a cake design for my own wedding cake easy peasy…but it has not been. I’ve turned back into indecisive bride. Yay.
These are some of the cakes that I’ve been crushing on throughout my design process (or at least, you know, recently):
Mrs. Elephant, Dallas, TXAge and Occupation: 27, Financial Operations AnalystFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, IT Student/Store ManagerEngagement Date: March 29, 2009Wedding Date: April 2011Venue: The Tribute Golf ClubAbout Me: I'm a Philly native creating roots deep in the heart of Texas. I might be a little obsessed capturing those Kodak moments of anything and everything (mainly on vacations). I've become more of a gamer thanks to Mr. Elephant, who I met online and can't wait to spend the rest of my life with. We are planning a wedding based on our favorite colors, blue and green, with a travel theme for 150 of our closest friends and family. Hopefully our long (2-year) engagement won't kill me!
Recently, I’ve seen the topic of name changing on a handful of wedding sites. I believe that it is a personal choice for a woman to either keep her name, take her husband’s, or come up with a combination of the two names.
I personally don’t think that my last name is the sole factor of my identity. I know that I am who I am because of the way I was raised and the lessons I have learned about myself over the past 27 years. I can’t thank my family and friends enough for helping to make me the person that I am today. I love my name and the family history that comes with it, but I can’t wait to take Mr. E’s last name! I’m excited to start a family history with him and share that last name with our kids (down the road).

The soon-to-be hubs plays "Mr. Fix-It" in our new condo while I swoon over beautiful, personalized stationery and choose shades of aubergine for my bridesmaids' dresses... and thus begins my new fairy tale! Skirting to the East Coast for our September nuptials where my home state of Rhode Island awaits with fall foliage, I'm just a few dress fittings and bachelorette party away from saying "I Do" to a very happy ending!
I recently enjoyed my second bridal shower—this time in Chicago with Mr. Seashell’s side of the family! It was a perfect, mild August afternoon, wonderfully suited for a garden party. Mama Seashell flew in from Providence, and Bridesmaid Allie made the trek from Atlanta. Bridesmaid Ashley also attended because she lives in Chicago. And of course, I was also surrounded by Mr. Seashell’s loved ones—friends and family who have been exceptionally welcoming to me for which I could not be more grateful.
The shower was hosted by wonderful friends of Mr. Seashell’s family. Cousins and Aunts brought delicious dishes, created beautiful centerpieces, and contributed in countless ways to make the day memorable.
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CAAge and Occupation: 24, English teacherFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacherEngagement Date: September 2008Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyardAbout Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
I have had some great experiences living in Tokyo. I have many international friends because this is a very international city.
So here I was on a Saturday night at a summer fireworks festival with a handful of new Chinese friends, a German guy, and some Japanese women. We are all sitting on the floor in someone’s living room, grubbing on yummy Japanese food and downing beers and chu-his (alco-pops). Mr. Glasses wasn’t there, so I showed everyone a picture of him—it happened to be one of our engagement pictures. I explained the concept of engagement pictures and showed them our online album on my iPhone. This led to a discussion about the traditions of marriage in our respective cultures. Then the German guy piped up:
“I’ve been with my girlfriend for 11 years, and I’m never going to propose.”
In a room full of five girls and two guys, this did not go over well. As the only married woman in the room, I had to ask why. His response: Read more…

Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TXAge and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance ITEngagement Date: August 8, 2009Wedding Date: March 2011Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc EventsAbout Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).
I mentioned the bridesmaids’ letters I am sending out here, but I needed a way to include a return address on the envelopes, which are a metallic dark blue. This is the same color envelope I plan to use for our wedding invitations, so I figured I would use the bridesmaids’ letters as a test. I was convinced that I had come up with a perfect way to imprint our wedding logo and address on the back of our dark blue envelopes. Embossing. In theory, it was Uh-MAZING! In reality, not so much. Even though it didn’t really work for this project, I think it could be really cool for something else, so I figured I’d share the details of what I did so you could see what worked and what didn’t.
I first purchased a custom rubber stamp from Simon’s Stamps, which was super cheap ($13.95, including shipping…for real!) and came pretty quickly. I was really impressed with the quality and the inexpensive price. I also bought embossing powder (it comes in a ton of colors, but I got silver), embossing ink (again, I bought silver), and an embossing heat tool, which is like a mini blow dryer but doesn’t blow nearly as hard.
Mrs. Barrettes, Tumon, Guam/Napa, CAAge and Occupation: 29, DancerFiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Licensed Building ContractorEngagement Date: November 16, 2008Wedding Date: October 2010Venue: V. Sattui WineryAbout Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!
OMG, I thought we were going to leave Guam without having received our wedding rings! I ordered them from Etsy and let the seller know when we would be leaving—she mailed them out with about 4 days to spare! I loved these rings the minute I saw them (over a year ago), and messaged the seller personally when I saw her shop was recently closed. I NEEDED those rings! She was more than happy to work with me.
My point-and-shoot doesn’t do them justice. The colors are so vibrant! I fell in love with the purple band, but Mr. Barrettes couldn’t be convinced to wear purple so he opted for the blue. Read more…
Mrs. Zebra, Providence, RIAge and Occupation: 24 Marketing/Costume DesignerFiance's Age and Occupation: 26 Management/Firefighter Engagement Date: December 12, 2008Wedding Date: March 2011Venue: The Providence BiltmoreAbout Me: I'm a small town New England girl with an affinity for procrastination, crossing the proverbial line, and putting her foot in her mouth. I'm a lover of history, all seasons, sewing and Incubus. I design costumes on the side for my old high school's theatre department, which is where I met my sexy man. Our motto for our Big Fat Lebanese/Portuguese/Irish near-300 person wedding is "the more the merrier"! We are marrying in a Catholic ceremony and are hammering out the details of our Victorian-inspired reception.
I really can’t go any further into my wedding-world plans with you until I talk to you about my savior. No, not Jesus…the utter hilarity of my Catholic ceremony will be a little later. (Get your seatbelts ready, folks! We’re in for a bumpy ride!) My savior is Sara! OMG, did I just use somebody’s real name? Yessum, and I will tell you why. She is in college majoring in event planning. She wants to be a wedding planner and is using my wedding as a portfolio piece. Sara, being a part of my own pro-bono-college-portfolio piece, was happy to return the favor. She is also a great dumping ground for all those brochures from vendors I decided not to go with.

My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!

Mrs. Thimble, NYC/PhiladelphiaAge and Occupation: 26, Actress & Costume Designer (+ day job)Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lawyer & Techie WizEngagement Date: August 22, 2008Wedding Date: October 2010Venue: The Pearl S. Buck HouseAbout Me: I’m an easily inspired over-thinker delighted with the process of designing, building, directing and {dare I say} co-starring in the early-autumn affair I’ve been dreaming up. I’m a sucker for trendied-up comfort foods and old family anecdotes; I have an affinity for adjectives, alliteration, eyelet and earl grey; and I live for quality time with family and friends. I never guessed I’d marry my “high school sweetheart", but when it turned out to be my funny, techie, loyal Mr. Thimble I was committed for life. We’re both mid-career transition and ready to move back to small-townish TBD, PA in a pre-wedding flurry of all-good life changes.
I love the thick cotton paper, I love the luxurious feel of the indented letters, I love the endless possibilities with modern polymer plates as well as authentic artisan typeset. Letterpress is rich with history and—not that I’ve ever pressed any letters myself (I nixed that plan months ago)—it feels intimate because the person printing has to mix the ink and man the machine or hand press it on a tabletop press. Letterpress was completely unattainable in my eyes when I started this journey. But the more I learned about it, the more we had to have it.
I kept looking for an affordable option and was lucky enough to find an invitation designer with a vintage Chandler and Price Pilot press who fit our budget just in time for save-the-dates, and I enlisted Janie’s help again for invitations. It was the best wedding decision we’ve made yet. If I had DIYed this—via a letterpress class or my inkjet—I would have pulled my hair out.
Sorry to get all nostalgic. I’m repeating myself, I know. But I needed to look back over the last 2 years (yes two years! Our engage-aversary was last Sunday) and have an inspiration-to-reality moment for myself, you know?
Hive, you helped me choose our invitations, now are you ready to see them? Read more…

Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography StudentEngagement Date: February 14, 2010Wedding Date: January 2011Venue: Gardens of the WorldAbout Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
I love my mum. She has been there for my dad and us kids through thick and thin and always puts our needs before her own. However, this can mean she forgets to look after herself at times. Mum should have the best, so when we went shopping for her mother-of-the-bride dress I wanted to make sure that she found something that she would feel beautiful in and not something that she “just got because it would do.” I want her to feel excited about how she looks on my wedding day because she deserves that and more. Like me, she gets down about her looks, but the wedding is a chance to prove to her how gorgeous she really is.
Mum & Dad
Mum can be quite specific about what she likes when she wants to be. The perfect dress for her has to be “summery,” not too dark-coloured, feminine (not too “formal”), and must “fit” with our garden wedding. Read more…

I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
Wow! I am still in awe that I’m here…as Miss Brooch! I’ve pined over this. I’ve longed for this. I’ve literally dreamed of this! For over a year, I’ve tried to explain to everyone I know, non-bloggers and wedding un-enthusiasts included, the importance of a website called Weddingbee. The importance of me blogging for Weddingbee. I was meant to do this, I told Mr. Brooch. He’s the only person who really understands how much it means.

I’ve already written a whole post about showing our college some love, but I can’t help but add these little flags to my college love collection. We aren’t having cupcakes, so I don’t know how to incorporate them into the wedding, but I need to figure out a way. Our college’s main colors are navy and white, which are also our wedding colors, so they’ll go perfect with the rest of the decor.
