Invitation Anatomy: The Skin

September 1st, 2010 @ 3:52 pm by Ms. Stripes

Just in case you’ve been wondering if we actually invited anyone to this awesome shindig of ours, I think it’s high time I talk gush about our invitations. Just a little gushing, mkay? And maybe a photo or two. No big deal.

First off, my most sincere apologies to the trees. As green as our wedding will be in a lot of ways, the invitations are not one of them. What can I say? *Hangs head in shame* I absolutely LOVE paper.

And that brings me to these invitations of ours. Our relationship was hot, heavy, and all-consuming. I should have mentioned them earlier, but quite frankly we just needed a little break from each other. I was sick of their constant and increasing demands—a liner here, a little twine there, an inner vellum envelope in a nearly impossible to find size, and the list went on. Our invitations were a demanding lover, and finally I had to say enough was enough.

After the post office lied to us about the amount of postage it would take to get these invitations out of my life (*shakes fist*), I resigned myself to slapping a blue goat (“It’s a ram, a ram is better right?” said the placating postal worker) on the last few invites and dropping them in the mail.

Yes. You read that correctly.

Some of our wedding invitations required an additional 15 cents postage, and damn it if that blue goat wasn’t our savior. But that’s a beast for another post. Har. Har.

And so, without further ado, I give you our invitations, boxed up and ready to go in all their glory:

Invitation Anatomy: The Skin : wedding calligraphy invitations los angeles stationery 12 1

The front of the envelope:

Calligraphy by moi:

It’s been a few weeks and since I’m out of practice I almost ran out of room for the “Obama.” Oops. Oh well.

Stamps to die for:

The liner:

And there you have it. That’s the skinny (and the skin) of our most excellent invitations. Still to come: The bones, the guts, and finally the heart (awwww) of our invitations. So stick around, mkay?

Anyone else recently kick that demanding invitation lover to the curb? Doesn’t it feel good to know how much effort you put into the relationship now that it’s over? Smile. And I certainly don’t miss those non-stop crafting days one little bit…

OMG Miss Stripes, I have been waiting for this invite post - seriously, I almost PMed you, “WTH? Where are the invites???”

I’m gonna need more, like, now. The other day I went on a search of Bees STDs and invites, and while I’m totally stealing your STD style…I have yet to determine if I will also steal your invite steal.

So, while I like what I see so far, I’m gonna need some more…asap. Oh and thanks, in advance. Have I said I wish I was you yet? Oh like, a million times. Here’s a million and one….

I swear, not a stalker….

@crayfish: Ha Ha! Billy Buttons are super survivors- the ones in our house are ALL from our Easter shenanigans! Love how cheery they are and don’t have to worry about getting fresh flowers as often! :)
@ktbrady: Yowza! I’m not sure I deserve quite so much praise! *blush* Hopefully the rest of our invites live up to your expectations, lol! :)

I don’t think I have ever loved “the skin” of an invitation before, but yours is sooo pretty!

CUTE! I love the liners! We thoroughly enjoyed breaking off our relationship with our invitations, the split occurred in the middle of the night as my husband and I dumped them all into the after-hours box at the post office. Ours had a hard time accepting that it was over, though; we had a few show up at our door begging us to take them back. (Yeesh.) We finally achieved closure though.

OMG same thing happened to me at the post office! I was so proud of my pretty love stamp, and then they brought them all back to me and said i needed more postage *grr* but i got the blue ram (big horn sheep lol but iam a hunter and everyone knows I have always wanted to hunt one so it works out) but I feel your pain!

Um. Wow. I’m all mixed up with feelings like “HOLY MOLY THAT’S AWESOME” and “Holy crap, my invites are totally inadequate!”

Haha I LOVE them, Stripes. Can’t wait for the bones and the guts and the heart!

I was inspired by the bicycle print kraft paper at Paper Source, but at $2.50 for a single 12×12 sheet, we just couldn’t afford it. SO I made my own in illustrator and printed it onto “paper bag” text weight paper from PS! It was super easy, cheap, and I was able to customize with our wedding date! Highly recommend going this route!
@duckduckamy: OMG! It must be amazing! That would be a great coffee table book!
@Encore: Don’t worry- I won’t deprive you of the goat! Stay tuned!@LittlestBirds: So sneaky! Luckily we only had one invite try to reente our lives. It got the boot quick. @Miss
Socks
: No way are your invites inadequate socks! We’re just nuts! @heather25: I had the best luck with stampwants.com, which is a little like bay for stamps! eBay also had a few gems and etsy has some gorgeous (albeit pricier) options too! Happy hunting!
