Shades of Bridesmaids

September 1st, 2010 @ 8:40 am by Mrs. Brooch

I haven’t decided whether I want my all of my bridesmaids to wear the same dress or have them wear dresses that are shades of one color. If I run into a particular dress that I adore, they might all wear that dress!

However, in the event I don’t find one dress, I may have them wear different dresses of the same shade. I’ve always imagined the dresses would be green (my favorite color is green), but I’ve seen bridesmaids in shades of yellow, pink, and gray.

Either way, I need to have pictures of this new trend to show my girls. A lot of them haven’t heard of bridesmaids wearing different dresses, and a lot of them have never seen it either. Also, I know for a fact at least one them thinks it’s flat out tacky. (It’s OK! I’m not offended!)

If the shoes were the same, this would work for me:

I like, except I wish they were both long dresses:

Not my colors at all:

Very, very stylish:

I really like this group:

If we decide to do this, I think there are a few “rules” we need to apply so that we can still have a cohesive look. I think not having laid these guidelines is what went wrong in a few of the above wedding parties.

1. The dresses will all be the same length.

2. We won’t stray too far from the base color.

3. We don’t need to match necklines.

4. We should consider matching fabric type.

5. We’re not going to mix florals and patterns with solids. Let’s stick to solids.

6. Shoes will match. This will bring the entire ensemble together!

What are your bridesmaids wearing?

I love lots of variety, so my girls are all wearing the same shade of David’s Bridal blue, but they can pick whatever style they want. They are also wearing yellow shoes, but whatever style/shade of yellow they want.

I want it to look like it was put together, but the girls could express their style. I’m getting them the same jewelry, so that’ll be the only thing that’s matchy-matchy! :)

I picked out a color I liked, sent all the gals a swatch and told them to find a cocktail length dress in that color and to wear either silver or black shoes. With the exception of my sister - who told me that she would rather have me pick out her dress and shoes, which I happily did - the girls had fun finding something they like. I know for a fact that two of the girls have already worn their dresses again (and not to another wedding!)

I wanted some mismatch but all my girls picked the exact same dress. Who am I to tamper with that? Good luck! I can’t wait to see pictures & how it all works out.

The shoes in the first picture. The ones on the bottom right. I need them. Please tell me who makes them because I can’t figure out the website. Please.

We’re thinking of same fabric and length, but the girls decided on the style of the dress.

I think it’s good that you’re doing ground rules! My girls are in matching dresses because that’s what we all decided would be best for us - and they picked the dress. But I think since you have those “rules” it sounds like it will look very cohesive and awesome without looking like they are trying too hard to match. And I agree that some of the above photos look kind of disastrous because things being too different - especially with clashing colors lol. Love your idea though! And love your color - Chartreuse is our accent color =).

Knee length dresses with a medium to darker shade of green or darker lavender to eggplant, in anything but chiffon or jersey fabric, and a neckline that doesn’t allow cleavage (a concern with the build of my friends). I told them to wear shoes that support their ankles when dancing and not too grippy of soles so when they spin they don’t tear something.

@shaydenise: Thanks! I’m still nervous about whether we can pull it off. There’s a lot more to come on this topic!

Very trendy in the wedding world right now. I like it. I like it when there’s a common thing though, like fabric or length or something. I hope you find something that works!

My bridesmaids won’t have shades of a color- but they are picking their dresses. They had to get a knee length, chiffon, eggplant dress from alfred angelo or a knee length, chiffon, lapis dress from David’s bridal. (eggplant and lapis in this case happen to be the exact same color).

They each found a dress they love and two of them are wearing the dress before my wedding for a special event in their lives.

I totally agree with the idea of same fabric and length! I considered doing three totally different colors of the same dress (we’re talking yellow, green and blue) on the girls and matching ties on the boys, but I recently scrapped that because my dress is more girly than trendy and I don’t think that it looks right together. I think that different dresses in different shades of the same color would be beautiful! I may have to steal the idea… :-)

I like the common threads you are keeping among the dress choices (e.g. length). Your ladies are going to look great!

Here’s some Bridesmaids dresses I made a while back in different colors of the same print: http://ny-image3.etsy.com/ifb_fullxfull.5863467.jpg

I’m doing a similar thing for my own wedding:)

They’re actually Marc Jacobs, but your link helped me figure that out.

Mine are all wearing the same bari jay dress, but if I had to do it again, I’d pick a number of styles and let them pick whatever they want :( Oh well, I’ll live I suppose, haha. I love that first example you gave!! (The one from polyvore.com) I think something like that would look amazing! And they would def. wear them again! (Well I would if I was one of your bm’s, heh.)

I plan to find a company that has several dresses styles in the color I want, and then have them pick the style.

My girls are so varied in shape that it’s unfair to try to put my tall, skinny FSIL in the same dress as my short, busty little sister and my tiny, petite friend from HS in the same dress as my tall, busty, apple shaped MOH. It just isn’t going to happen.

My plan is to just set a length, and ask that they wear the same or similar fabrics (b/c of the color difference between fabrics).

First off, I love polyvore! It’s perfect for wedding planning, and plain fun =).
Second my best friend is getting married a month before me and she’s doing the same thing only with red. We’ve all put the dresses we picked together and it looks really good. I think you will be fine!
