Mrs. Husky's Picture
Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.
About Mrs. Husky

I was born a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. Even during the worst of times (which, let’s face it, have been plentiful), I’ve cheered, yelled and cursed at the TV during as many games as I have been able to watch. Mr. Husky, on the other hand, was raised in a state without a professional football team. So, the NFL never had a place in his Sunday plans, until I came along. Now look:

Our Wedding Date: A Serendipitous Selection : wedding denver Img 2050 img_2050

(personal photo)

That would be me and Mr. Husky in New Orleans, fully decked out in Dallas Cowboys jerseys, during a late-season game against the Saints last year. The best part about converting someone to the wonderful world of football?

It’s pretty easy to influence their fandom. Since I was rooting for the Cowboys, Husk rooted right along with me. Of course, the fact that in our town, the bars opened at 10:00AM for the first kickoff also helped to get him involved…

So what does this have to do with the wedding? Well, our wedding is during football season. Most Sundays during those five months of regular season are spent over wings and beer, rooting for our team. We needed to figure out how we were going to watch the game the day after the wedding! We would be 2.5 hours from home, with a lot of stuff to pack up. It was going to be tough to get someplace to watch our ‘Boys. Plus, I’ve heard Nebraska brides talk about getting married during college football season, and all the men gathering around a television to catch the game. I’m not even sure there’s a TV set anywhere on the property! And then the schedule was released, and it turns out the Sunday following our wedding happens to be a Bye Week—meaning they have the day off!

I just love it when serious problems resolve themselves!

What unexpected luck have you enjoyed during planning? Is your wedding during a popular sports season? How are you managing the die-hard fans?

Haha we have a similar problem. My FI is a diehard Jets fan, and we’re going on our honeymoon for two weeks. I have no idea how we’re going to watch the games in South Africa!

My best friend got married on the same day as the Mizzou-Kansas football game. It is the largest game of the season, and we have one of the oldest rivalries in the country.

I had a friend text me the score the whole time we were taking pictures (though, I only looked at it when I wasn’t in a picture, and we were all texting :p).

I was sad that I couldn’t attend/watch the football game, but my best friend’s wedding was sooo much important…even though I let out a scream in the limo when Mizzou won with just a few seconds to go :)

My dad passed me one of those “You know you’re from the south when…” lists a few years ago, and my favorite had to be: when someone you know has used a football schedule to plan their wedding date. Because that’s what we did!!! Sadly, our team lost on our wedding day. We were also lucky enough to catch the next week’s game on our honeymoon in a boat in the middle of nowhere :) Wreck ‘em, Tech!

Yea, we’re die-hard Gator fans, We both graduated from UF and our families did as well… it’s pretty big in our family. Our wedding is FL/GA game weekend which is epic down here so our ceremony starts as the game ends, lol. I’m not missing my boys playing hard! So hopefully we win - I have no doubts =) - and we can go into the ceremony even MORE happy than we normally we be ha ha.

For us, it’s the Tour de France. That’s right, cycling! For an entire month, we’re glued to the tv, cheering men in spandex. It’s awesome because I sure do love me a man in spandex (McHusband was an avid cyclist and, due to his recent unemployment, I get to see him in spandex more often. *swoon*), so we never considered getting married in July unless we went to watch the Tour and were married in a random location in France. However, a vow renewal works for me!

Congrats on your Bye Week.

Ahhh I am one of those Nebraska brides you are talking about! I knew there was no way I could plan a wedding around football season! I get so upset (yes, this is horrible to admit) when I have to attend a wedding on game day! The last wedding I was at I had never seen so many ear pieces during a ceremony and I was getting texts of the score. Definitely chose a spring wedding because of this reason! NE people really love their college football & I don’t want to get in the middle of that!

I have this problem! Except we are college football fans - I’m a recent UF graduate - and the Saturday of our wedding is the FL-AL game (HUGE). Our friendor chef wants a tv or a radio to hear the game - I was considering showing the game at the reception but that was nixed ;)

I’m getting married on a Friday, but the next day is college game day. It might affect a few of the out-of-towners who might come in (hotel rooms) but 95% of my guests are townies anyway.

However, I know a friend of mine was invited to a wedding the next day (on game day), and as a season ticket holder, decided to attend the game instead. I feel sorry for the wedding couple, the wedding reception is in the same town as the game, and the guests that do show up will be in horrible traffic! Definitely things to consider when planning your wedding!

This really did make me laugh out loud- FI wishes I was a Cowboys fan (or an easy convert who didn’t grow up with a football team) but I’m from Pittsburgh… needless to say, the Steelers are it for me. A legitimately serious testing point in our relationship came when the Steelers won their sixth Super Bowl ring, passing the Cowboys total of five. FI wasn’t quite as excited as me :) You’re lucky to be in a one-team relationship!

woo hoo! Go COWBOYS! I was in the same boat as your FI. Mine was the die hard cowboys fan since birth and I was baseball clay ready for a football mold haha. 4 years of dating and I’ve converted. :) Our reception site has a sports bar so if they have a game the sunday after our Oct ‘11 wedding that’s where we’ll be!

FI and I are die hard Jets fans. Our wedding weekend works out really well for us. They play Cinnci on Thanksgiving and don’t play again until that Monday against the Pats. I’m hoping to surprise him by finding a good sports bar in New Orleans (which shouldn’t be hard) so that he can watch the game during our honeymoon.

My dad actually took his portable radio to our wedding reception and listened to the game for a couple hours! The cheek! But the photos are pretty funny…

Phew! Yeah, I wasn’t so worried about our pro teams (Steelers/Cowboys) cuz we’ll definitely be able to get somewhere to watch them on Sunday. I was really worried about the college games, though. I am a die-hard Pitt fan, and MANY of our guests are die-hard Penn Staters. Luckily, neither team is playing a “big” game that weekend, so I don’t have to worry about people a) sneaking out of our reception to catch the game (which I’ve totally done - Hello?! Don’t get married on the day of the Pitt/ND game!) or b) sneaking IN a radio/tv/phone/etc to WATCH THE GAME during a reception (which I’ve seen but would never do). So yeah…I definitely checked up on that before nailing down our date. It can’t be helped!

I still don’t know why anyone would get married in the fall. (We scheduled ours for June partly for that reason.) We have TWO weddings to attend this fall, both of which are luckily on away game weekends. But still, the nerve of these people!

We’re tempted to get a slingbox just so we can stream the games to our phones during the receptions.

I was a bridesmaid for a wedding scheduled last year on the SEC championship game(Alabama vs. Florida). The wedding was purposely set to be in the morning so that by the afternoon the guests would have already left and the after party/gameday party would begin. They set up a big screen tv in the tent and we watched as Alabama stomped Florida and Tebow cried. It was sweet since we all graduated from the capstone! RTR!!

I’m a huge Jets fan and my fiance is a huge Patriots fan. UGH. We’re getting married in September and I think we’re just going to have to deal with it - I’m the hardcore plan the schedule around the game type, but he believes it’s OK to TiVo live sports (yeah, I tease him a LOT about not being a real fan).

He really wanted a fall wedding, so we went with September which I think I can handle. We should be back for baseball playoffs and before the football division races really heat up. If it were up to me, we’d get married earlier in the year, but I guess he’s worth the sacrifice, wrong team and all.

My fiance and I are huge Steeler fans and so we didnt really have the option of having a fall wedding (and the chance of missing a game)! So spring it is! hahahaha

My FI is a HUGE Ohio State fan, and I really wanted a Fall wedding. OSU doesn’t usually have a bye week, but they do this season, so that’s our wedding date! haha I didn’t want my FI and his family spending the whole wedding on their iPhones, and God forbid if the team lost!

We are actually GOING to the Packers game the day after our wedding! We’re both huge fans, but I would have gladly skipped this one in order to sleep and pack for the honeymoon. My FI is so excited, though: wedding followed by football followed by tropical vacation!
