Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Obsessing About Flowers

September 1st, 2010 @ 1:47 pm by Mrs. Brooch

I am really anxious to get to a florist. I don’t know why, but I can’t stop obsessing about flowers! I can’t stop thinking about what kind of flowers we should have. I walked into the grocery store Monday night and stopped right by the bouquets of flowers. I started taking pictures with my camera, and ever since then, I haven’t been able to get my brain off of flowers!

I just can’t wait to sit down with a florist and say, let’s try some hydrangeas with some roses! Or do you have anything that’s green or pale pink? What flowers are in season during the spring? It’s a good thing I don’t know any florists because I would probably be stalking them asking a thousand questions at this point!

I am clearly going to have to schedule an appointment with one soon. Of course, I have to get my girls on board for this. I know I’m going to need a few second opinions! Even if we don’t pick the flowers or the bouquets that we’ll have for the wedding, I think looking at flowers will really help us envision the day.

What do you think about these?

The last picture is my absolute favorite. I’ve looked at a lot of wedding flower bouquets and table arrangements, but none have topped this last photo. As you can tell from the other pictures, I’m a little all over the map when it comes to wedding flowers. I like all types of flowers but none as much as this last one. Probably cause of all the green. It really just represents our color scheme perfectly. Yeah, I’m pretty much in love with this picture. Haha!

Have you collected flower inspiration? Are you anxious to talk to a florist?

Totally love this post - maybe you can help me figure out what type of flowers to pick, lol. I am all over the place with what I like and have no idea how to incorporate our modern vintage vibe (black and cream colors) into our flowers!!!

That last bouquet is really awesome. I’m a big fan of using non-floral elements, like the berries and succulents. I always think they make things more interesting. Also, in the first picture, I LOVE those low settings with the stemless roses. That looks awesome.

My meetings with our florist may have been my favorite ones from the planning process, I always came away from them excited about all the new ideas we’d come up with together and filled with beautiful visions in increased clarity. Good luck with your florist meetings, I hope you also find them to be very helpful in translating your taste and ideas into concrete possibilities.

You sound just like me! I have been thinking about flowers a lot lately! My wedding is also in April so I keep thinking I have to go with pastels but I really love jewel tones! We meet with the florist after the first of the year so that should be fun! :) I’ll be interested to see what you come up with. Good luck and have fun!

@ fancysarah…have you thought of using anemones? They come in an ivory color with a very dark/black center. I think they’re so beautiful and very vintage looking!

I was very much “here is a check, you are a professional, do what you do” with the florist, and MAN did that freak her out! She would definitely have been more comfortable with someone asking a thousand questions.

I love the pics your style is amazing and as a florist, these are the things that bring your vision to life for us to custom design your wedding floral decor. Just be on the lookout for seasonal flowers, for example in your favorite bouquet the Stellata Pods, and Celosia are in season right now, but won’t be there for you in the spring..Good luck on your journey to find the most perfect flowers for your big day!

I’m so with you, Brooch. I was a MESS about finding a florist, mostly because I was worried about price and that they would laugh at my budget. I did a lot of internet research, calling on those that had pictures on their web site of a style I liked, regardless of the type of flowers and ruling out those with ridiculous price lists or minimums. I found one I liked, and you will too with a bit of work. Like with all other vendors, go with your gut. The right florist will be patient in describing the types of flowers.
