About Mrs. Plaid

Mr. Plaid is Brilliant!

September 1st, 2010 @ 4:14 pm by Mrs. Plaid

OK, well maybe just to a bride who has been stressing over a giant project she decided to take on that’s been sitting in her closet for many months now. What can I say? It was too big. And I just didn’t want to do it.

I scored these jars from work months ago for free.

Guess what, ladies? I finally did something with them. And let me explain why they defeated me for so long before the brilliant Mr. Plaid helped this sister out.

Basically, the jars were free, but they had these pain-in-the-butt labels stuck on them. And I mean stuck. It was if they used extra super-strength glue on these bad boys. God forbid a corner of a label peel off. They weren’t taking any chances.

Anyways, it was taking F-O-R-E-V-E-R (Sandlot, anyone?) to scrape the labels off. I had to soak them in hot water, then scrape them with an old credit card, then try to wipe all of the glue off with Goof-Off, then run them under water, do another round of Goof-Off, and then run them under more water. It was horrible. I got a big ol’ blister on my hand.

I was feeling defeated, so I finally broke down and asked Mr. Plaid if he’d help. He agreed. Yay! But then they continued to sit there for another week. Stupid jars.

Here comes the genius idea:

Instead of peeling the labels off, he suggested we just cover them up! Novel idea, right? I feel like such a dummy. It took me many months and a blister, just for Mr. Plaid to come along and tell me to cover them up. Why didn’t I think of that?

So cover them up is what we did! We used three different wedding wrapping papers (all bought at the Dollar Store) and four different ribbons to jazz these jars up.

I plan on grouping three jars together on each table for centerpieces. Each cluster will sit on top of a square of either yellow or blue fabric and each jar will hold a floating candle. I’m hoping for a very romantic glow to the reception area.

Did your FI come up with any genius solutions to tough wedding problems?

I’m the queen of missing the simple solution staring me in the face. Mr. SD has to come to my rescue all the time too! Good solution to your problem, they look great

Good idea! My only caution would be to make sure that the paper is thick enough that you won’t see through it when you light the candles. I think you should be OK because you are using floating candles.
We did the same thing (vases, wrapped in vellum & royal blue & yellow ribbon, in clusters of 3, on top of our royal blue tablecloths, with candles inside) and they looked really great!

My only other suggestion would be to consider putting ribbon around the tops of the jars so they look less jar-y. Unless you like that look :)

for future things you have to have the label (price sticker, etc) come off of - try lemon essential oil. Just a drop or two, let sit for a minute or two and it comes off perfectly and cleanly (plus it will smell like lemon).

Ummm yeah. Mr. 5642 saved my bacon with our OOT booklets. They are bound with brads along the left side and trying to punch a hole through 8 pages of *ridiculously* thick card stock was eliciting a string of unflattering cussing from my craft room. Mr. 5642 saved the day with a drill and itty bitty drill bit. It took me about 15 minutes to do one with my primitive finishing nail and hammer approach, but it took him a similar 15 minutes to finish the remaining 14 booklets! Three cheers for boys with power tools!

YES! One of which was my first project: tying ribbon on my bubbles. He figured out how to make sure it said “Happily Ever After,” using the least amount of ribbon. There’s more, but that’s the first.

Your “not so attractive crafting outfit” is pretty much what I wear daily, LOL!

Hey Miss Plaid! Genius idea!

Just an fyi though if you still want to get rid of the glue - either try rubbing alcohol or acetone!
