Ms Seahorse's Picture
Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
About Ms Seahorse

We are having a thrilling day today.

First, I could not find the keys anywhere for a pet sitting job, so 2 hours went to searching for them. Yup, two hours, just searching for keys. Did I mention that this is not my week? Also, my check engine light came on. See, again: not my week.

But right now—right now, folks, I am sitting on the couch while my lovely fiancee flits around setting things up for the big event: trying on wedding dresses.

“What?” you say. “Didn’t you already do this?” you wonder. Oh, silly you, just because we already bought one dress (each) doesn’t exclude the option of buying another. Or four others, if you are Fancee.

We got our dresses all altered up and Fancee does not like her dress. If she can’t find something else then she’s stuck with it, and that’s the deal we’ve worked out. In the meantime, some giant J.Crew boxes showed up at our house today, and Fancee washed her hands and feet so that she didn’t dirty the dresses. Once her appendages had been thoroughly cleaned, we began the process: she with the opening and on-trying, and I with the bemused watching and faithful documenting.

Open the box! Out will pour hope and glory!

Um, maybe instead of hope and glory there’s just tissue paper?

Hope and glory? Is that you?

Dress #1 – not so much with the glory. It had an interesting back, but it didn’t fit quite right.

Pretty fiancee! All mine!

dress #2 – so pretty, but way too big, and a little stiff. I got tired of taking pictures, if you couldn’t tell.

Neither of these dresses was *the dress*—whatever that means. So we dug around in the boxes to find dresses #3 and #4, and lo and behold—they were not there. It turns out they shipped separately. So, with under three weeks to go, the additional dresses will be arriving soon.

In the meantime, something else arrived in the mail!

Package for me?

A vest you say? Why, this is the wrong color…

Okay, readers, maybe some of you are thinking that you already saw me in my muslin fitting. So the truth is that I was so excited about my *actual* suit’s arrival that I did not document the thrilling unwrapping process. Sorry to disappoint, but moving on:

I got an email last week that this was done:

I got it in the mail a day or two ago, and this morning we had a little photo shoot in the sun:

Glorious!

Beautiful lining! Is that mild satisfaction on my face?

There are a few things that need to change, so I’ll be parting with my new-found suit to send it back for alterations. Guys, I cannot say enough good things about A.J. and Lianna at MacheteNSons—this whole experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and I have been really impressed by the customer service. That, coming from someone who works in customer service, is saying a lot. THANK YOU, A.J. & Lianna.

So the struggle to dress the future Horse-McGirlfriendLadys continues, but we are making progress! Yes, my friends, I truly believe that progress is being made! And I am thoroughly impressed by the ability of some tailors to fit you over the internet. Amazing.

Have you/are you in the process of the/did you struggle with clothing yourself and/or your future spouse? Did you consider driving all the way to NY in one day just so your beloved could try on a dress she found on the internet? Did you consider scrapping the whole thing and showing up in jeans? And is there anyone who reads this who is looking for a tailor? ‘Cause, seriously, I love the ones I found. Lastly: how hot do I look? And how pretty is my future wife? Discuss.

Looooooove it!

Also, I really like the dress with the keyhole back – is the mis-fit alterable?

I’m very curious to see what dresses #3 and #4 are. I tried on some JCrew dresses but (predictably) only liked the one that was too many dollars. Or so I thought at the time.

My fiance’s clothing has been a bigger stresser. I’d sort of assumed he would buy a new suit, because that’s what most of the men I know have done, but it turned out he wanted something fancier than a suit. I wanted to be all practical and spend money on something he’d wear again, but he pointed out that a) I wasn’t buying a dress I’d be likely to wear again, and certainly wouldn’t wear to other weddings or job interviews or funerals, so why should he? and b) since he really wants to lose weight, this was not the right time to invest in a suit since he rarely needs to wear them. So instead, we are renting. And I stupidly picked out a place that is not open on Sundays and is very local to us (has several branches but all in our neck of the woods) but not local to any of the wedding party. So how on earth all the rented fancy duds are getting back to the rental place when we are leaving for our honeymoon Monday night, it is a mystery to me.

I LOVE dress #1. Fancee looks stunning in it. And that vest combo is pretty sexy, I have to say. I hope your days of awfulness are ending soon; for reals, you deserve a break from the bad luck!

Love your vest! And I agree that it’s amazing how the internets can tailor clothing. I ordered a winter coat over Etsy and she tailored the sleeves to my exact arm measurements. Perfect! I wish I could get all my clothing custom fitted.

and thanks for your recommendation – we’re definitely in the market for a tailor (or, at least i think we are ’cause i suspect it’s the only way we’re going to get a suit for my girlfriend).

You both look awesome. I’m partial to Fancee’s dress # 2 up there. I can’t wait to see 3 & 4. I hope she finds “the one!”

Its too bad those two didn’t fit right- they really look lovely, especially the back on the first one! I hope this dress saga has a happy ending!

Your suit came out great! How sad that first dress didn’t fit Fiancee because that shape and the back detail looked great on her.
